BACKGROUND: In the Autonomous Region of Galicia, no study has been made of the impacts of air pollution on human health, despite the fact that several of its major cities have moderate levels of pollution. Therefore, we have considered the need of making this study in the city of Vigo. The main objective of this analysis is that of analyzing the short-term impact of air pollution on the daily death rate for all reasons in the city of Vigo throughout the 1991-1994 period, by using the procedure for analysis set out as part of the EMECAM Project. METHOD: The daily fluctuations in the number of deaths for all causes with the exception of the external ones are listed with the daily fluctuations of sulfur dioxide and particles using Poisson regression models. A non-parametric model is also used in order to better control the confusion variables. RESULTS: Using the Poisson regression model, no significant relationships have been found to exist between the pollutants and the death rate. In the non-parametric model, a relationship was found between the concentration of particles on the day immediately prior to the date of death and the death rate, an effect which remains unchanged on including the autoregressive terms. CONCLUSIONS: Particle-based air pollution is a health risk despite the average levels of this pollutant falling within the air quality guideline levels in the city of Vigo.  相似文献

The consumption of medication, especially over‐the‐counter drugs, can reflect environmental exposure with a lesser degree of severity in terms of morbidity. The non‐linear effects of maximum and minimum apparent temperature on respiratory drug sales in A Coruña from 2006 to 2010 were examined using a distributed lag nonlinear model. In particular, low apparent temperatures proved to be associated with increased sales of respiratory drugs. The strongest consistent risk estimates were found for minimum apparent temperatures in respiratory drug sales with an increase of 33.4% (95% CI, 12.5%‐58.0%) when the temperature changed from 2.8°C to ?1.4 °C. These findings may serve to guide the planning of public health interventions to predict and manage the health effects of exposure to the thermal environment for lower degrees of morbidity. More precisely, significant increases in the use of measured over‐the‐counter medication could be used to identify and anticipate influenza outbreaks due to a more sensitive degree of the data source.  相似文献

Despite the increasing life expectancy, an individual’s later years tends to be accompanied by a decrease in the quality of life. Though biological changes that occur through the natural process of aging cannot be controlled, the risk factors associated with lifestyle can. Thus, the main goal of this systematic review was to evaluate how nutrition can modulate aging. For this purpose, thirty-six studies were selected on (i) the efficiency of nutrition’s effect on aging, (ii) the evaluation of biomarkers that promote healthy aging, and (iii) how to increase longevity through nutrition, and their quality was assessed. The results showed that choosing low carbohydrate diets or diets rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals, fish, and unsaturated fats, containing antioxidants, potassium, and omega-3 decreased cardiovascular diseases and obesity risk, protected the brain from aging, reduced the risk of telomere shortening, and promoted an overall healthier life. With this study, the conclusion is that since the biological processes of aging cannot be controlled, changing one’s nutritional patterns is crucial to prevent the emergence and development of diseases, boost longevity, and, mostly, to enhance one’s quality of life and promote healthy aging.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Application of case-crossover designs provides an alternative to time-series analysis for analyzing the health-related effects of air pollution. Although some case-crossover studies can control for trend and seasonality by design, to date they have been analyzed as matched case-control studies. Such analyses may exhibit biases and a lower statistical efficiency than traditional time series analyzed with Poisson. METHODS: In this article, case-crossover studies are treated as cohort studies in which each subject is observed for a short period of time before and/or after the event, thus making possible analyzing with Andersen-Gill and generalized linear mixed models. We conducted a simulation study to compare the behavior of these models applied to case-crossover designs with time series analyzed with Poisson and with case-crossover analyzed by conditional logistic regression. To this end, we created a random variable that follows a Poisson distribution of low (2/day) and high mean events (22/day). This variable is a function of an unobserved confounding variable (that introduces trend and seasonality) and data on small particulate matter (PM10) from Barcelona. In addition, scenarios were created to assess the effect on exposure exerted by autocorrelation and the magnitude of the pollutant coefficient. RESULTS: The full semisymmetric design analyzed with generalized linear mixed models yields good coverage and a high statistical power for air-pollution effect magnitudes close to the real values but shows bias for high effect magnitudes. This bias seems to be attributable to autocorrelation in the exposure variable. CONCLUSIONS: Longitudinal approaches applied to case-crossover designs may prove useful for analyzing the acute effects of environmental exposures.  相似文献

The possible pain inhibitory effects of periaqueductal gray (PAG) stimulation were investigated in cats anesthetized with Nembutal and immobilized with Flaxedil. Unitary responses evoked by electrical stimulation of the upper canine dentine and by cutaneous facial noxious and nonnoxious stimuli were recorded extracellularly from the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis. A bipolar electrode was introduced into the PAG to test the effects of PAG excitation on the trigeminal response to dentine (TRED) and cutaneous nonnoxious stimulation. In some experiments, a similar electrode was lowered into the contralateral posterior thalamus to study the antidromic activation of subnucleus caudalis cells and the effects of thalamic stimulation on the TRED. Dentine stimulation evoked brief (6- to 15-ms) bursts of 1 to 10 spikes with 3- to 25-ms latencies. Most units (88%) were also activated by cutaneous facial stimulation. Stimulation of the posterior thalamus had no effect on the TRED or on responses to cutaneous stimulation, but activated antidromically 10% of the units. In 71% of the units PAG stimulation inhibited the TRED. In some of those cases (12%), the inhibitory effect persisted 30- to 60 s. The PAG stimulation could produce paradoxical effects, potentiating the TRED evoked by threshold intensity and inhibiting the TRED elicited by suprathreshold stimulation. About one-half the PAG points evoked detectable effects. Their location had no clear topographical distribution, although ventral sites were more potent than dorsal sites. Responses evoked by nonnoxious facial stimulation were also inhibited by the PAG.  相似文献
