Using positron tomography, a study of regional cerebral glucose utilisation was performed prospectively in a highly selected group of six neurologically unaffected primary chronic alcoholics. In this group, neuropsychological, behavioural and CT scan anomalies were comparable with those previously reported in more extensive studies. With respect to age-matched control values, cerebral metabolic rate was not significantly modified in the selected cortical, subcortical and cerebellar regions of interest. However, the metabolic regional distribution index, which reflects the distribution pattern of glucose utilisation, was selectively and significantly decreased in the medio-frontal area, pointing to a limbic metabolic dysfunction apparently linked to chronic alcoholism. 相似文献

The gene for the most frequent from of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa
(XLRP), RP3, has been assigned by genetic and physical mapping to a segment
of less than 1000 kbp, which is flanked by the marker DXS1110 and the
ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) gene. In search of microdeletions, we have
screened the DNA of 30 unrelated patients with XLRP by employing a
representative set of YAC-derived DNA fragments that were generated by
restriction enzyme digestion and PCR amplification. In one of these
patients, a 6.4 kbp microdeletion was detected which was not present in the
DNA of 444 male controls. A cosmid contig spanning the deletion was
constructed and used to isolate cDNAs from retina-specific libraries. Exons
corresponding to these expressed sequences as well as other putative exons
were identified by sequencing more than 30 kbp of the critical region. So
far, no point mutations in these putative exon sequences have been
identified.

After studying the historical importance of the domestic animal through the ages and the role of the "pet" animal in the contemporary world, the authors present an analysis of the literature dealing with the function of the animal in child development and the use of animals as therapeutic "tools". Polymorphic acetylation was investigated in twenty-seven patients with Gilbert's syndrome using the sulphadimidine test. Whereas the finding of 51% slow acetylators in seventy-eight control persons agreed well with the expected frequency in a continental European population, the prevalence of slow acetylators in Gilbert's syndrome was increased to 78% (P less than 0.03, Woolf's G-test). After oral administration of 14C-aminopyrine there was no significant difference between seventeen patients with Gilbert's syndrome and twenty-seven normal controls in total plasma clearance of aminopyrine (280 +/- SD 100 and 270 +/- 60 ml/min) and in the disappearance curve of 14CO2 in breath (0.23 +/- 0.04 and 0.22 +/- 0.03 h-1, respectively). Thus, whereas aminopyrine metabolism appears unaffected in the examined patients, the data documents a new association between slow acetylator status and Gilbert's syndrome. 相似文献

Purpose: Volumetric data can be used as complementary information to characterize grafting materials. The aim of this cadaveric study was to analyze a noncommercial measurement technique based on the novel concept of an “interactive rigid registration algorithm” (IRRA). Parameters analyzed included the reproducibility of IRRA measurements and their reliability in comparison with the established measurement technique of “region growing segmentation thresholding” (RGST). Materials and Methods: Three human skulls were used to simulate a total of 18 sinus grafts, using three incremental grafting procedures in each sinus (three skulls × two sinuses × three grafting increments). Radiopaque impression material was used for the simulated grafts, whose volumes were recorded by computed tomography from three different tilt angles. The reproducibility of IRRA measurements and the reliability of volumetric results obtained with both the IRRA and RGST techniques were evaluated by appropriate intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland–Altman analysis. Results: ICC greater than 0.9 indicated close to perfect agreement of the results obtained with both methods and good reproducibility of the IRRA measurements. Bland–Altman analysis demonstrated good inter‐method and intramethod agreement. Conclusions: The IRRA measurement technique can be recommended as a noninvasive tool to evaluate graft volumes in human maxillary sinuses. 相似文献
