Our experience with diagnostics of congenital disorders of glycosylation

The aim of this study is to report our 3years experience with the screening of congenital disorders of glycosylation. A common isoelectric focusing method with immunofixation was used for analysis of serum transferrin and alpha1-antitrypsin, apart from several other procedures. A group of about 1000 individuals, both healthy controls and patients, mostly with signs of a metabolic disease were examined. Here we present an overview of (1) hypoglycosylation findings, (2) distribution of protein variants, (3) misguiding rare Tf variants found in our set, and (4) association of some phenotypes with various diseases.     

Volatile substances from larval habitats mediate species-specific oviposition in Anopheles mosquitoes

Oviposition site selection has been recognized as critical both for the survival and population dynamics of mosquitoes. Volatile substances released from larval habitats have been implicated as potential olfactory cues mediating oviposition. In our continuing studies of cues involved in oviposition site selection, we collected material from the larval habitats of Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann and Anopheles vestitipennis Dyar & Knab, i.e., cyanobacterial mats and Typha domingensis Pers. litter, respectively. The volatile compounds were extracted by freeze-drying the material and trapping the volatilized material on a -55 degrees C titanium condenser. For oviposition trials conducted with wild-caught females, the tested volatile materials were pipetted onto filters floating on the surface of distilled water in Teflon beakers that were placed within oviposition cages. For both species, volatile materials in low concentrations increased oviposition, assessed as egg density, whereas there was a shift to reduced oviposition at higher concentrations. Volatile effect was strongly habitat/species-specific as shown by reciprocal treatment tests.     

Acute ischemia as a complication by transoesophageal echocardiography.

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a safe procedure with a low complication rate. We present a patient with severe coronary artery stenosis or disease who developed acute coronary ischemia of the anterior wall as a complication of TEE procedure. The possible mechanism can be stress during the procedure.     

Failure of the canine principal ascending epicardial lymphatic to regenerate after transection

We transected the principal ascending anterior epicardial cardiac lymphatic in 10 dogs, and after varying time intervals reoperated to look for lymphatic regeneration using dye injection. Photographs and sketches were made to record the findings, and in six dogs serial histologic sections were also examined. In none of the 10 dogs was regeneration of the transected principal cardiac lymphatic detected although small lymphatic collaterals from the distal side of the lymphatic developed in 2 dogs. Further studies are merited to assess the role of lymphatic insufficiency in the development of coronary vasculopathy and chronic rejection after cardiac transplantation and other heart operations (e.g., coronary artery bypass) that may injure lymphatic drainage capacity.
