As our world becomes increasingly multicultural in nature, multilingual skills constitute an everyday phenomenon in schools. Since most of the second-language research has focused on school-age students, more research had to be conducted with language-minority students at the kindergarten level in order for psychologists and educators to develop effective and efficient systems for evaluating and tracking the developmental status of young language-minority children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential usefulness of a standardized continuous progress measure, the Picture Naming Individual Growth and Development Indicator, to longitudinally assess language development in 23 language-minority children, as well as in 13 native English-speaking children. Results indicated that we could use the Picture Naming Individual Growth and Development Indicator to detect differences in first-language and second-language development in language-minority children, as well as to detect differences between the two groups of children in their expressive English-language skills. 相似文献

We describe, for the first time, two adult patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) who presented palpable purpuric lesions on the lower extremities and buttocks. Skin biopsy was consistent with Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP). One of the patients exhibited renal and gastrointestinal involvement, as well. A favourable outcome was achieved in both the patients (after treatment with prednisolone only in the patient with renal and gastrointestinal manifestations). The possible pathophysiological relationships between PBC and HSP--particularly on the significance of the IgA antimitochondrial autoantibodies--are discussed. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first two cases of HSP, which developed in PBC patients. Therefore, this case study suggests that HSP may be rarely involved in the extensive list of immune-mediated diseases associated with PBC. 相似文献

Prevalence of obesity among American Indian children is higher than the general US population. The school environment and teachers play important roles in helping students develop healthy eating habits. The aim of this prospective study was to examine teachers' classroom and school food practices and beliefs and the effect of teacher training on these practices and beliefs. Data were used from the Bright Start study, a group-randomized, school-based trial that took place on the Pine Ridge American Indian reservation (fall 2005 to spring 2008). Kindergarten and first-grade teachers (n=75) from 14 schools completed a survey at the beginning and end of the school year. Thirty-seven survey items were evaluated using mixed-model analysis of variance to examine the intervention effect for each teacher-practice and belief item (adjusting for teacher type and school as random effect). At baseline, some teachers reported classroom and school food practices and beliefs that supported health and some that did not. The intervention was significantly associated with lower classroom use of candy as a treat (P=0.0005) and fast-food rewards (P=0.008); more intervention teachers disagreed that fast food should be offered as school lunch alternatives (P=0.019), that it would be acceptable to sell unhealthy foods as part of school fundraising (P=0.006), and that it would not make sense to limit students' food choices in school (P=0.035). School-based interventions involving teacher training can result in positive changes in teachers' classroom food practices and beliefs about the influence of the school food environment in schools serving American Indian children on reservations. 相似文献

Introduction
Availability of competitive foods in schools has been linked to unhealthful dietary behaviors of students. Little is known about the food environment of alternative high schools, schools that enroll students at risk of academic failure. We examined correlations between food opportunities during the school day and selected dietary behaviors of students attending alternative high schools.Methods
Baseline data were collected in fall 2006 as part of the Team COOL (Controlling Overweight and Obesity for Life) pilot study, a group randomized obesity prevention trial. Students (n = 145) attending 6 alternative high schools in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Minnesota, completed a survey on food opportunities during the school day and selected dietary behaviors. We used mixed-model multivariate cross-sectional analysis and adjusted for demographic characteristics to examine associations of interest.Results
Food opportunities during the school day were positively associated with overall consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, high-fat foods, and fast-food restaurant use.Conclusions
Having many food opportunities during the school day at alternative high schools was linked to the consumption of foods and beverages high in sugar and fat and low in nutrients. School-based interventions should focus on changing the food environment in alternative high schools to decrease less healthful eating opportunities and to increase the availability of healthful foods and beverages. 相似文献8.

Immunophenotyping is indispensable in the differential diagnosis of B-cell chronic lymphoproliferative disorders (B-CLPDs). However, B-CLPDs often show overlapping immunophenotypic profiles and may be diagnostically challenging. CD1d is an HLA class I-like molecule that presents glycolipids to invariant natural killer T cells. Normal mature B cells constitutively express CD1d, but with the exception of some conflicting data, its expression in B-CLPDs is unknown. We demonstrate that in 222 B-CLPD cases, CD1d expression of less than 45% is strongly predictive of CLL (likelihood ratio, 32.3; specificity, 97.4%; sensitivity, 84.1%). In addition, CD1d showed significantly higher staining intensity in splenic marginal zone lymphoma compared with atypical hairy cell leukemia, lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma, and mantle cell lymphoma, thus allowing the discrimination of the former from the latter immunophenotypically overlapping B-CLPDs. It is important to note that in a given patient, CD1d expression on malignant B cells was similar between tissues and remained unaffected by disease stage and treatment status. Our findings strongly argue for the incorporation of CD1d into routine lymphoma panels. 相似文献
