The objective of this study was to assess the physico-chemical parameters and waterborne parasites in selected recreational lakes from Malaysia. Samples were collected from seven stations of Recreational Lake A (RL-A) and six stations of Recreational Lake B (RL-B). The samples were processed to detect the presence of Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. using immunomagnetic separation kit, helminth eggs or ova by bright field microscopy and Acanthamoeba spp. by cultivation in non-nutrient agar. Chemical parameters such as ammonia, chlorine, fluoride, nitrate and nitrite and physical parameters such as dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, pH, salinity, temperature and total dissolved solid were also measured. Both lakes were freshwater with salinity ranging from 0.05 to 0.09 ppt. Most stations of these lakes were contaminated with Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia spp., Ascaris spp. and hookworm. Schistosoma spp. was found in RL-B only, while Acanthamoeba spp. was found in all stations. Of all sampling sites, station 5 of RL-B is the most contaminated. Linear regression and correlation analysis revealed that Giardia spp. and Schistosoma spp. showed a significant negative correlation with turbidity (p?<?0.01). Based on the preliminary data obtained, it is clearly shown that there is a necessity to implement the detection of waterborne parasites and physico-chemical analysis in Malaysia. Future work on heavy metals (chromium, copper, mercury and zinc) is recommended to enhance the overall water quality monitoring and to take appropriate safety measures to ensure maintenance of good water standards.  相似文献

PurposeTo understand the reasons behind current low utilization of brachytherapy for locally advanced cervical cancer in the United States.Methods and MaterialsA 17-item survey was e-mailed to the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) listserv of active members in 2018. Responses of attending physicians in the United States were included in the analysis.ResultsAmong a total of 135 respondents, 81 completed the survey. Eighty-four percent agree/strongly agree that cervical brachytherapy is underutilized, and 46.9% disagree/strongly disagree that residents are receiving adequate training for brachytherapy; 75.3% agree/strongly agree that inadequate maintenance of brachytherapy skills is a major obstacle to brachytherapy use; and 71.6% agree/strongly agree that increased time requirement constitutes a major obstacle. Over 97% will recommend brachytherapy for most patients with cervical cancer if given access/time; 72.8% always perform their own brachytherapy, whereas 29.6% reported some type of barrier exists in performing brachytherapy themselves, with time required to perform brachytherapy (9.9%) being a leading factor. A quarter (24.7%) routinely refer to other radiation oncologists for brachytherapy. Even among ABS members, 37.0% reported that they would perform an intensity-modulated radiation therapy or stereotactic body radiation therapy boost in specific scenarios in potentially curable patients. The most common scenario is inability to place a uterine tandem (56.7%).ConclusionsThe underutilization of brachytherapy in cervical cancer is widely recognized by ABS members with inadequate training during residency and inadequate maintenance of skills being possible major contributing factors. Even among ABS members, there are identifiable barriers. Continued advocacy and future initiatives in enhancing access to brachytherapy training and efficiency are needed.  相似文献

Brachytherapy is well-established as an integral component in the standard of care for treatment of patients receiving primary radiotherapy for cervical cancer. A decline in brachytherapy has been associated with negative impacts on survival in the era of modern EBRT techniques. Conformal external beam therapies such intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) or stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) should not be used as alternatives to brachytherapy in patients undergoing primary curative-intent radiation therapy for cervical cancer. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance image-guided adaptive brachytherapy is evolving as the preferred brachytherapy method. With careful care coordination EBRT and brachytherapy can be successfully delivered at different treatment centers without compromising treatment time and outcome in areas where access to brachytherapy maybe limited.  相似文献

Rattus spp trapped in wet markets in Quiapo, Manila and Balayan, Batangas had ectoparasites, Echinolaelaps echidnius (mite), and Polyplax spinulosa (louse). The endoparasites identified were Hymenolepis diminuta; the acanthocephalan Moniliformis moniliformis; Taenia taeniaeformis strobilocercus larvae and Capillaria hepatica in liver; Trichosomoides crassicauda of the urinary bladder; Sarcocystis sp of muscle tissue; and two different species of stronglyloid-looking intestinal nematodes. Rats had 100% infection with C. hepatica and T. taeniaeformis, exhibiting high parasitemia. The co-existence of rats with diverse parasitic species is reflective of the host's capability to support parasites' behavioral, physiological, and developmental needs. Despite heavy infection with intestinal parasites, and marked hepatic tissue damage owing to severe capillariasis and strobilocercus larval infection, all rats appeared healthy and agile, suggestive of a well-established rat host-parasite relationship. In view of the diversity and zoonotic nature of rat parasites, and the impoverished conditions prevailing in communities where Rattus spp survive and proliferate, they can readily facilitate parasite transmission to humans and other susceptible animal hosts.  相似文献

Presaccadic spike potentials were recorded from four electrodes placed around the eyes for 20 degree vertical saccadic eye movements. Twenty upward and 20 downward saccades were recorded using electro-oculography and the spike potentials back-averaged from the start of the eye movement. Separate average waveforms were obtained for upward and downward saccades. The onset of the spike was between 17.3 and 6.8 ms before the start of the saccade with downward saccades having earlier onsets than upward saccades. This difference was only significant in the right eye (P less than 0.025). The peak occurred between 3.4 ms before to 5.2 ms after the start of the eye movement and was earlier with downward saccades. This was only significant in the right eye (P less than 0.025). The onset to peak amplitude measured between 15.9 and 42.3 microV with no statistical difference between upward and downward saccades. It was found, however, that the electrodes placed below the eyes recorded larger amplitudes for upward saccades than the other electrode-recording positions (right eye P less than 0.05, left eye P less than 0.025). A second component to the spike potential waveform was observed in many of the recordings and a possible origin of this component due to eyelid activity is hypothesized.  相似文献

Breast conservation therapy has become a common modality for therapy of early stage breast cancer. Most studies of primary lung irradiation correlate the risk of pneumonitis with the volume of lung treated. It is proposed that the lung volume treated during tangential radiation of the intact breast may be calculated from a measurement of the central lung distance. Central lung distance is the distance from the chest wall to the edge of the field at the central axis. This study examines whether the incidence of radiation pneumonitis indeed correlates with the lung volume treated as calculated from a measurement of the central lung distance. From January 1, 1985, through December 31, 1998, 353 patients were treated with breast conservation therapy at the University of Louisville. The charts were reviewed for any evidence of clinically significant radiation pneumonitis. The treatment films were obtained and the central lung distance ascertained. Four cases of radiation pneumonitis were identified. Three of these occurred after tangential radiation and one occurred in a retreatment field after bone marrow transplant. The overall rate of radiation pneumonitis was 1.2%. A central lung distance of less than 3 cm was found in 78.3% of patients and 21.7% had a central lung distance of three or greater. There was no correlation between central lung distance and the risk of radiation pneumonitis. Breast conservation therapy is a well-tolerated modality for treatment of early stage breast cancer. The incidence of radiation pneumonitis is very low and is usually associated with other factors in addition to the tangential field lung volume.  相似文献
