The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic and prognostic significance of ischemia modified albumin (IMA) levels in patients with Crimean‐Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF). This retrospective study was conducted with patients with CCHF. IMA levels in patients with CCHF were determined using the rapid colorimetric method. IMA levels of CCHF patients were significantly higher compared with the control group (P = 0.0001). At an IMA cut‐off point of 0.555 ABSU (absorbance units), sensitivity was 65.1%, specificity 82.5%, positive predictive values (PPV) 82.5%, and negative predictive values (NPV) 65.1%. IMA levels of patients with hemorrhage were significantly higher compared with patients without hemorrhage (P = 0.005). IMA has been validated as both a new and sensitive ischemia and oxidative stress biomarker. In addition to its diagnostic significance, IMA investigated in CCHF patients at time of arrival may be an important marker with its prognostic role in determining in the early stage whether the disease will follow a hemorrhagic course. 5,6-dihydroxyindole (DHI) is a melanin pigment precursor with antioxidant properties. In the light of a report about cytotoxicity of DHI, the aim of this study was to assess possible toxic effects of DHI on cells related to the eye, such as human ARPE-19 cells and mouse retinal explants. Moreover, DHI was tested on its effects on retinal function in vivo using electroretinography. We found cytotoxicity of DHI against ARPE-19 cells at 100 microM, but not at 10 microM. 10 microM DHI exhibited a slight, though not significant protective activity against UV-A damage in ARPE-19 cells. We found cytoprotection in cultured mouse retinas by 50 microM DHI or its diacetylated derivative 5,6-diacetoxyindole (DAI), respectively. In ERG measurements in vivo, amplitudes were decreased only slightly by 100 microM DHI compared to saline, whereas a better preservation of amplitudes was visible at 10 microM DHI, in particular with respect to cones. In histological sections, more cones were found at 10 microM DHI than at 100 microM DHI. As a conclusion, DHI shows a slight protective effect at 10 microM both in vitro and in vivo. At 100 microM, it shows a strong cytotoxicity in vitro, which is strongly reduced in vivo.  相似文献

Headache is one of the most common causes of presentation to the physician in children. We aimed to evaluate the dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis with a new method in children with headache and also to investigate the relationship between the headache type, pain severity and duration in our study. We included 40 patients diagnosed with migraine, 40 patients diagnosed with tension-type headache (TTH) and 40 healthy children in the study. No significant difference was found between the total thiol, native thiol, and disulfide levels of the patient and control groups. However, the disulfide/native thiol and disulfide/total thiol ratios were higher in the migraine group than in the TTH and control groups. No correlation was found between the Pediatric Migraine Disability Assessment (PedMIDAS) score and the headache duration and any of the thiol/disulfide parameters. A negative correlation was found between the total thiol and native thiol levels and the PedMIDAS score in the TTH group. Migraine and TTH patients have different effect to thiol/disulfide homeostasis.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine whether high-dose antioxidant supplementation had an impact on the acute exercise effects related to erythrocyte membrane mechanics. Experimental animals (n=32) were divided into four groups as control, exercised, supplemented, and supplemented + exercise. Four-week antioxidant supplementation (vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc) was applied to experimental animals. Following acute exercise on a motor-driven rodent treadmill, erythrocyte aggregation and deformability, erythrocyte adhesion to endothelial cells, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase activities of the erythrocytes were analyzed. In both supplemented and non-supplemented exercised groups, there was a significant decrease in SOD activities and erythrocyte aggregation, and an increase in adhesion to endothelial cell although there was no change on erythrocyte deformability. There were no differences in the responses to the exercise of supplemented and nonsupplemented rats. The data suggested that high-dose antioxidant supplementation did not alter the effects of acute exercise on erythrocyte membrane mechanics.  相似文献

Longitudinal growth changes in the transverse and vertical craniofacial dimensions occurring between 10 and 14 years of age were evaluated in 22 female and 23 male subjects. All subjects were healthy, had a clinically acceptable occlusion, and had not received orthodontic or orthopedic therapy before. Serial cephalometric radiographs were taken at ages 10, 11, 12, and 14 years. In studying the P-A cephalograms, seven transverse and five vertical measurements were used. The effects of age and sex on the transverse and vertical growth of the craniofacial structures were investigated by means of analysis of variance and Bonferroni multiple comparison test. The results of the study revealed that all measurements studied were affected by age, and cranial, facial, nasal, and maxillary widths were affected by sex. The most pronounced age-related increases occurred in the mandibular width for transverse measurements and in the total facial height for vertical measurements in both sexes during this study.  相似文献

This study compared the degree of marginal leakage of a compomer in Class V cavities of human primary molars prepared by a conventional dental bur and air abrasion with or without acid etching. Fifty-six non-carious extracted primary molars were randomly divided into four groups (n=14) to be prepared by four techniques: Group-1: Bur followed by acid etching: Class V cavity preparations were placed on the buccal surfaces of each tooth using a high-speed handpiece. The preparations were 1.5-mm deep, 3-mm long and 2-mm wide, with the occlusal margin in enamel and the cervical margin extending 0.5 mm below the cementoenamel junction. The preparations were acid etched with 37% phosphoric acid starting at the enamel margins for 30 seconds and rinsed with water for 20 seconds. The preparations were then restored with Compoglass F. 2-Group 2: Bur: The preparations and the treatment procedures were the same as in Group 1, with the exception of 37% phosphoric acid application. Group 3: Air abrasion followed by acid etching: Class V cavity preparations were placed on the buccal surfaces of each tooth using a handpiece of an air-abrasive system (PrepStart, Danville Engineering). The system was supplied with dry compressed air at 80 psi. In all tests, the air-abrasion system was operated with an 80 degrees-angle handpiece tip and 50-mm aluminum oxide particles. A tip with a 0.38-mm inner diameter was used at a 2-mm distance. The treatment procedures were the same as in Groups 1 and 2. Group 4: Air abrasion: The preparations and treatment procedures were the same as in Group 3, with the exception of 37% phosphoric acid. After finishing the restorations, the teeth were stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours. The samples were thermocycled for 500 cycles between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C with a dwell time of 30 seconds. The samples were then immersed in 0.5 percent basic fuchsin dye for 24 hours at 37 degrees C. The surface-adhered dye was then rinsed in tap water and the teeth were embedded in a chemically-activated acrylic resin and bisected longitudinally in a mesiodistal direction with a low speed diamond disk. Each section was examined under a stereomicroscope (Nikon, Tokyo, Japan) at 20x magnification. The data were analyzed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance to determine any statistical significant differences in microleakage scores among the groups at a p-value of 0.05. Also, the enamel versus cementum-dentin microleakage scores of each group were compared using z-test at the 0.05 significance level. There was no statistically significant difference among the groups (p>0.05), but a statistical difference between enamel and cementum-dentin surfaces was evaluated (p<0.05).  相似文献

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) are enzymes involved in the reconfiguration of the microenvironment by means of degrading the extracellular matrix and have more than 20 subgroups containing zinc. Proteins that serve as the inhibitors of these enzymes are called tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP). These enzymes have been shown to be active in a wide range of processes, from wound recovery to fetus development, heart diseases, and spread of malignant diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between the type, stage, and prognosis of childhood lymphoma subjects and matrix metalloproteinase type-9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor, tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase type-1 (TIMP-1). Paraffin blocks of childhood patients diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 23), Hodgkin lymphoma (n = 14), or reactive lymphadenopathy (n = 12) were retrospectively immunohistochemically stained with MMP-9 and TIMP-1 stains and whether there was a relationship between the degree of staining and the type, tumor stage, and prognosis of the disease was investigated. Moderate and high degrees of MMP-9 staining were detected in 94.6% of the lymphoma patient tissues and a slight TIMP-1 staining was detected in 21.6% of the lymphoma patient tissues. No relationship was observed between the degree of these staining patterns and the type, tumor stage, and prognosis of the disease. This study indicates that the equilibrium between MMP-9 and TIMP-1 is important in lymphomas in addition to all the physiological and pathologic events although MMP-9 and the TIMP-1 staining patterns are not related to the tumor stage, prognosis, and type of the disease. Larger series of patients are needed to determine the prognostic value of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in childhood lymphoma.  相似文献
