Abstract –  The main objective of this study was to assess the epidemiology of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) to the primary teeth of preschool children and second, to investigate whether TDI were related to anterior open bite and, third, whether TDI are related to socio-economic circumstances in an urban Brazilian population. A clinical examination was performed during the National Day of Children's Vaccination. TDI were classified according to the modified classification proposed by Ellis. In addition to those criteria the presence of tooth discoloration was recorded. An interview was carried out with mothers or guardians. The data collected included mother's level of education and living conditions. The prevalence of TDI was 9.4%. The maxillary central incisors were the most affected teeth. Most children with a TDI experienced traumatic injuries to one tooth (6.3%), while 2.8% had two and 0.4% had three traumatized teeth. The most common crown fracture was in enamel only (68.8%), followed by crown fracture of enamel and dentin (13.8%). Missing teeth following trauma occurred in 10.9% of those with TDI. The prevalence of tooth discoloration was 5.1%. Children with anterior open bite had twice the level the level of TDI compared to those with normal occlusions ( P  = 0.001). Socio-economic factors were not statistically significantly associated with the occurrence of TDI. The prevalence of dental injuries in Brazilian preschool children was low. Children with anterior open bite experienced more dental injuries. Neither of the indicators of socio-economic status was related to the prevalence of TDI.  相似文献

Rosmarinic acid is a naturally occurring hydroxylated compound. It is present in many plants, for example, it occurs in Artemisia capillaris, Calendulla officinalis, Melissa officinalis, Salvia officinalis and in other several plant families. It also shows a number of interesting biological activities, e.g. antiviral, antibacterial, antiinflammatory and antioxidant. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of the i.p. administration of rosmarinic acid (1, 2, 4 or 8 mg kg(-1)) on elevated plus-maze, step-down inhibitory avoidance and open field task in rats. In addition, we evaluated its genotoxic effect on brain tissue using the comet assay. Rosmarinic acid (2 and 4 mg kg(-1)) increased the number of entries in the open arms, suggesting an anxiolytic-like activity when used in lower doses, without affecting the short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM) retention on inhibitory avoidance task. Eight milligrams per kilograms of this acid was enough to increase the locomotion and motivation of the animals, but not 1, 2 or 4 mg kg(-1), suggesting that in lower doses, this compound can produce anxiolytic-like effect without exerting locomotor alterations or DNA damage in brain tissue.  相似文献

Purpose: To assess the age the of the first dental visit and the association of self-perceived oral health, socioeconomic and clinical indicators with healthcare utilisation in Brazilian preschool children. Materials and Methods: An epidemiological survey with 455 5- to 59-month-old children was conducted on National Children's Vaccination Day in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. Data about age and reasons for the first dental visit, healthcare utilisation, socioeconomic status and self-perceived oral health were collected by means of a parental semi-structured questionnaire. Calibrated examiners evaluated the prevalence of dental caries (WHO) and dental trauma. The assessment of the association used Poisson regression models (prevalence ratio; 95% confidence interval [CI]). Results: A total of 24.2% (95% CI: 20.3% to 28.4%) of the study sample had already had a first dental visit. Older children, those with dental caries and dental trauma and whose mothers had a higher level of education were more likely to have gone to the dentist. Children of low socioeconomic status were more likely to have visited public than private healthcare services. The reasons for the first dental visit were associated with clinical indicators of the sample. The distribution of utilisation of the types of oral healthcare services (public or private) varied across the socioeconomic groups. Non-white children with dental caries and dental trauma tended to visit a dentist only for treatment reasons. Conclusion: Socioeconomic and clinical indicators are associated with the use of dental services, indicating the need for strategies to promote public health and reorientation of services that facilitate dental access for preschool children.  相似文献

Objective: This study assessed the relation of child oral health‐related quality of life with school performance and school absenteeism. Methods: We followed a cross‐sectional design with a multistage random sample of 312 12‐year‐old schoolchildren living in Brazil. The participants completed the child perceptions questionnaire (CPQ11–14) that provides information about psychological factors, while their parents or guardians answered questions on their socioeconomic status measured by parents' education level and household income. A dental examination of each child provided information on the prevalence of caries and dental trauma. Data on school performance, which included the results of baseline Brazilian language (Portuguese) tests, and school absenteeism (school days missed) were obtained from the school register. Multilevel linear regression was used to investigate the association among psychological and socioeconomic status and children's school performance. Results: In the multiple model, after adjusting for individual covariates, being a girl was associated with higher school performance (P < 0.05), whereas low household income (P < 0.05), higher mean of CPQ11–14 (P < 0.05), and higher school days missed (P < 0.001) were identified as individual determinants of lower school performance. When the school‐level covariates were included in the model, the association between subjects' level characteristics and school performance still persisted. Conclusion: Children's school performance and absence were influenced by psychological and socioeconomic conditions.  相似文献

Purpose

It has been suggested that subjective measures of oral health are influenced by both individual and contextual characteristics. This study assessed the relationship between neighborhood and individual social networks and child oral health-related quality of life (COHRQoL).

Methods

This study followed a cross-sectional design using a multistage sample of 478 children aged 1–5 years old. Caregivers completed the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) and answered questions related to socioeconomic status and social network. The dental examination provided information on the prevalence of dental caries, dental trauma, and occlusion. Contextual social determinants included the presence of cultural community centers and of workers’ association in the neighborhood. Data analysis considered the total ECOHIS scores as the outcome and neighborhood/individual social networks as the independent variables. A multilevel Poisson regression model was used to investigate the association among individual and contextual characteristics and COHRQoL.

Results

Total ECOHIS scores ranged from 0 to 41 (possible range 0–52). The mean ECOHIS score was low (mean = 1.8, SD = 3.9), and the functional domain presented the highest mean impact on COHRQoL (mean = 0.5, SD = 1.4). Following adjusted analysis, low household income, visiting a neighbor less than once a month, the presence of anterior open bite, dental trauma, and dental caries were identified as individual determinants of negative impact on a child’s quality of life. These variables remained associated with the outcome even after adding the contextual-level variables in the model. At the contextual level, the presence of community cultural centers was associated with overall mean ECOHIS score; higher impacts on COHRQoL were observed in those living in neighborhoods without cultural community centers.

Conclusion

There is a significant association between individual and contextual social determinants and COHRQoL; unfavorable social conditions and poor socioeconomic status have a negative impact on caregiver reports of children’s oral health-related quality of life.  相似文献

Background: Child oral health–related quality of life (COHRQoL) has been increasingly assessed. However, the full relationship between gingivitis and COHRQoL has been assessed by only a small number of studies. This study aims to assess the association between gingival bleeding and how a child perceives its OHRQoL. Methods: This cross‐sectional study used multistage random sampling to enroll 1,134 12‐year‐old schoolchildren from Santa Maria, a southern city in Brazil. Participants were examined for gingival bleeding according to the community periodontal index criteria, a full‐mouth clinical examination of six sites per tooth. COHRQoL was assessed by the Brazilian version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire for 11‐ to 14‐Year‐Old Children (CPQ11–14), and data on socioeconomic status were collected. Multilevel Poisson regression models fitted the association of gingivitis with overall and domain‐specific CPQ11–14 scores. Results: In general, children with bleeding in ≥15% of sites had higher total CPQ11–14 scores and domain‐specific scores than their counterparts. This association persisted after adjustment for other potential confounders. The presence and extent of gingival bleeding was associated mainly with emotional limitation domains of the CPQ11–14; those with extended levels of gingivitis had a 1.20 times higher mean score than those with low‐level/no gingival bleeding (rate ratio = 1.20; 95% confidence interval = 1.10 to 1.31). Conclusion: The present results indicate that the presence of extensive levels of gingivitis might be negatively associated with how children perceive their oral health and their daily life.  相似文献
