The purpose of the pre~ent paper is to review certain aspects of catarrhal jaundice and arsenical jaundice and their relation to acute yellow atrophy in connection with a case of diffuse liver degeneration following neo-arsphenamine and mapharsen treatment with rapid fatal termination. Such a review may serve to clarify our present position in regard to the pathogenesis of catarrhal jaundice and arsenical jaundice. The case is remarkable in that the liver remained Iarge to the end in spite of the fulminating course.     

ISOLATION OF VIRULENT TREPONEMA PALLIDUM FRQM HUMAN AORTA THIRTY-TWO HOURS AFTER DEATH FROM CARDIOVASCULAR SYPHILIS

After a comprehensive rernew of the literature on syphilitic aortitis, Longcope, (1) stated in 1913; ": . . . the presence of spiro: chetes in these lesions, as might be expected, cannot by any means be constantly demonstrated with Levaaiti stain. . . . . . . That these organisms are ''Treponema pallidum seems almost certain thouS:h actual proof of such by culture from the arterial lesions, a most difficult task, or direct inoculation into animals, has not as yet been accomplished."

As far as the writers are aware, few studies on the changes of blood and cerebrospinal fiuid sugar during hypoglycemia have been made in schizophrenic patients. While our work was in progress, two articles had come to our notice. In the paper by Dussik (1) the blood and cerebrospinal fluid sugar values at the time of insulm coma were determined, while in the communication by Day, Niver and Greenberg (2) the course of changes in blood ar.d cerebrospinal fIuid sugar after insulin was followed. The object of this paper is to report the results of a number of individual and serial determinations of both the bIood and cerebrospinal fluid sugar in schizophrenic patients treated by insulin according to Sakel''s method (3).

INTRODUCTION The phenomenon of anaerobic ammonium oxidation was originally discovered in a denitrifying fluidized-bed reactor treating effluent from a methanogenic reactor in the 1990s[1]. Isolation and differentiation of embryonic stem cells from BALB/c mouse

Objective To invest the efficient method which can culture and induce embryonic stem cells to neurocyte in vitro. Methods Isolate the blastula of 3.5 d from BALB/c species mouse. Culture the cells from inner cell mass (inner cell mass, ICM) which were isolated by mechanical method on the mouse embryonic fibroblaste cell (MEF) feeder layer or 0.1% gelatin coated dishes. The stem cells were identified by characterized morphology, alkaline phosphatase stain, differential potency in vivo and immunochemistry stain. The isolated cells were differentiated by serial induction method that mimicking the intrinsic developmental process of the neural system. Results The isolated cells were positive for alkaline phosphatatse and SSEA-1 (stage specific embryonic antigen 1). Moreover they were identified pluripotent by differentiation in vivo. Therefore the isolated cells presented the characters of ESCs. Then the isolated cells were able to differentiate into neurocytes in vitro. Conclusion Mouse embryonic stem cells isolation, culture and differentiation system has been established.     

INTRATHECAL ADMINISTRATION OF P.ENICILLIN REPORT OF A FATAL CASE IN AN AbULT

In the December, 1948 number of the C.M.J. just received, Dr. Chieh Sung reports two cases of death in infants following intrathecal injection of Penicillin and he states "Reports of convulsions resulting f.rom the intrathecal use of Penicillin are still lacking from this part of the wojld." In view of this, we wish to report the following fatality as a warning to others. On April 5th, 1949, a member of the Communist M''ilitary Medical Administra- tive Staff attended our Orthopaedic Clinic and gave a history of having received'' a gunshot wound of.his head five years previously and having had a discharging sinus ever since. In 1947, he had three operations by a surgeon in a military ihospital but the wound failed to heal.
