Background: Physical activity has been positively linked to quality of life (QOL) in older adults. Measures of health status and global well-being represent common methods of assessing QOL outcomes, yet little has been done to determine the nature of the relationship of these outcomes with physical activity.Purpose: We examined the roles played by physical activity, health status, and self-efficacy in global QOL (satisfaction with life) in a sample of older Black and White women.Method: Participants (N = 249, M age = 68.12 years) completed multiple indicators of physical activity, self-efficacy, health status, and QOL at baseline of a 24-month prospective trial. Structural equation modeling examined the fit of 3 models of the physical activity and QOL relationship.Results: Analyses indicated that relationships between physical activity and QOL, self-efficacy and QOL were all indirect. Specifically, physical activity influenced self-efficacy and QOL through physical and mental health status, which in turn influenced global QOL.Conclusions: Our findings support a social cognitives model of physical activity’s relationship with QOL. Subsequent tests of hypothesized relationships across time are recommended. Funding for this study was provided by the National Institute on Aging (Grant AG 20118). Postural and eye-blink reactions to acoustic startle probes were examined in 24 volunteers, who completed two blocked conditions (baseline, startle). A postural reaction during the startle condition demonstrated a reflexive movement in the anterior-posterior direction, which was not observed during the baseline condition. This reflexive response was positively associated with the eye-blink reflex, such that larger blink magnitude related to greater posterior movement. These findings were not observed for postural movements in the medial-lateral direction. The results suggest that a measurable postural reaction may be observed following a startling acoustic stimulus, which may reflect generalized bodily flexion associated with a preparatory behavioral response.  相似文献

In parotid, sublingual and submaxillary glands stimulated by continuous intravenous infusion of isoprenaline at various doses for 3 h, the concentrations of the polyamines putrescine, spermidine, spermine and N1-acetylspermidine as well as the activities of ornithine decarboxylase and spermidine/spermine-N1-acetyltransferase were determined. Ornithine decarboxylase is the enzyme that catalyses the formation of putrescine from ornithine. The most striking effect was observed in parotid glands. Here, the beta-adrenergic agonist increased the activity of spermidine/spermine-N1-acetyltransferase markedly, but only slightly (if at all) that of ornithine decarboxylase. It also increased the concentrations of N1-acetylspermidine and putrescine markedly. The result obtained in this gland indicates interconversion of higher polyamines to putrescine.  相似文献

Polyamines are important for protein synthesis and tissue growth. In rat salivary glands, the activity of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), the enzyme catalysing the formation of putrescine, and the content of putrescine, spermidine, spermine and N1-acetylspermidine were assayed after parasympathetic or sympathetic nerve stimulation in the presence of various autonomic receptor blockers. Increases in ODC activity occurred on activation of non-adrenergic and non-cholinergic receptors in response to parasympathetic nerve stimulation and on activation of alpha(alpha 1)- as well as of beta(beta 1)-adrenoceptors in response to sympathetic nerve stimulation. Moreover, in parotid glands, a beta(beta 1)-adrenoceptor-mediated inverse pathway for putrescine formation seemed to exist: from spermidine via N1-acetylspermidine.  相似文献

Plasma protein adsorption pattern on characterized ceramic biomaterials.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The protein/biomaterial interactions of three biomaterials used in hard tissue surgery were studied in vitro. A dynamic flow system and two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) were used to investigate the adsorption of proteins from diluted human plasma on hydroxyapatite, alumina and zirconia, with regard to total protein binding capacity, relative binding capacity for specific proteins and flow-through and desorption patterns. The ceramics were characterized regarding physicochemical properties; namely, chemical composition by elementary analyses and specific surface, pore volume and pore size distribution using the BET-method and Hg-porosimetry. The materials were found to adsorb a surprisingly low amount of plasma proteins, leaving more than 70% of the surface free. The cellular response will therefore be highly affected by the physico-chemical properties of the material, in contrast to a surface fully covered with proteins. Regarding the adsorption of proteins, most proteins exhibited similar flow-through patterns on the three adsorbents. The exceptions with different flow-through patterns were apolipoprotein D (Apo D), apolipoprotein J (Apo J), complement factor C1s (C1s), complement factor C3 (C3), ceruloplasmin, fibrinogen, alpha1 B glycoprotein and alpha2 HS glycoprotein and serum retinal-binding protein (SRBP). The role of these proteins on acceptance or rejection of implants has to be investigated.  相似文献

Widely different implant materials induce surprisingly similar tissue reactions in vivo in contrast to their in vitro responses. Increasing attention has recently been given to the surface texture of the material. When both the material composition and the surface topography are varied, the surface topography seems to be the predominant factor for the induced tissue response. The present study addresses differences in the tissue response to commercially available Millipore mesh filters of polypropylene with pore sizes of 0.6, 10.0 or 30.0 microm. The Millipore filters with adjacent tissue were directly sectioned in a cryostat and evaluated via an immunofluorescence technique with double and triple staining, allowing simultaneous analysis of different antigens in tissue sections. These results show that macrophages, total cells, necrotic cells, nitric oxygen distribution, early angiogenesis, and capsule thickness were influenced by the surface structure. Implants with pore sizes of 0.6 microm, where entrance of inflammatory cells was inhibited, induce the most pronounced foreign body capsule formation. The 10- and 30-microm filters, in contrast, had large amounts of macrophages inside the filter structure, although very few inflammatory cells were found outside the filters. The inflammatory cells within the filters appeared not to influence the foreign body capsule induction. The critical factor for the formation of a foreign body capsule seems to be the localization of implant-close macrophages. Whether this is due to differences in cell activation or in signal transduction to collagen-synthesizing fibroblasts remains an open question.  相似文献

The ability of the blood-brain barrier to form dopamine from increasing doses of systemically administered L-DOPA has been studied in rats by a combination of chemical determination of dopamine, and histo-chemical and cytofluorometric measurements of L-DOPA and dopamine. The break-through of L-DOPA from the circulation into the brain parenchyma via the enzymatic blood-brain barrier was estimated by comparing the amount of newly formed dopamine in the caudate nucleus-putamen and in the cerebellum. The capillaries were found to efficiently trap L-DOPA in their walls, and an upper limit was reached (at an administered i.p. dose of 100 mg/kg of L-DOPA). It could be estimated that approximately 3 % of the total dose of L-DOPA given was decarboxylated by the blood-brain barrier. The possible influence by the regional differences in perfusion of the two regions seen after administration of L-DOPA was ruled out in measurements of local cerebral blood flow using the 14C-ethanol technique.  相似文献
