Case Control Study of Chronic Bronchitis in glass Bangle Workers

Eighty-nine cases of chronic bronchitis were matched against167 asymptomatic controls from the glass bangle industry ofFirozabad. Factors of age, social status, smoking habit andduration of exposure were studied. Duration of exposure wasfound to be a factor contributing significantly to the causationof disease. Type O Renal Glucosuria

ABSTRACT. We observed a 7-year-old boy with virtual absence of renal tubular glucose reabsorption (type O renal glucosuria). Glucose titration studies in his family revealed severe type A renal glucosuria in a younger brother, a mild type A defect in the mother and normal glucose reabsorption in the father; thus a spectrum of renal glucose transport defects was observed in members of the same family.

目的：对１９ 例鼻咽部Ｂ细胞性恶性淋巴瘤与ＥＢ 病毒（ＥｐｓｔｅｉｎＢａｒｒ ｖｉｒｕｓ,ＥＢＶ） 感染的相关性进行研究。方法：利用免疫组织化学及原位杂交方法对ＥＢＶ 进行检测,并用免疫组化及原位杂交双染法标记肿瘤细胞,以鉴定ＥＢＶ阳性的细胞为Ｂ淋巴瘤细胞。结果：ＥＢＶ 编码的小ｍ ＲＮＡ探针（ＥＢＥＲ） 原位杂交显示,８ 例原发性鼻咽部Ｂ细胞性恶性淋巴瘤中３ 例绝大多数肿瘤细胞呈阳性表达,１ 例潜在性膜蛋白１（ｌａｔｅｎｔ ｍｅｍｂｒａｎｅ ｐｒｏｔｅｉｎ １,ＬＭＰ１）阳性。而１１ 例继发性鼻咽部Ｂ细胞性恶性淋巴瘤ＥＢＥＲ全部为阴性。全部病例进行了ＬＭＰ１ 检测,除１ 例原发者,全部阴性。利用ＥＢＥＲＩＳＨ（ＥＢＥＲ原位杂交） 和免疫组化ＣＤ 标记物进行双标记染色证实,ＥＢＥＲ 和ＬＭＰ１阳性细胞为ＣＤ２０ 阳性,ＣＤ４５ＲＯ 阴性。鼻咽部原发性Ｂ细胞性恶性淋巴瘤ＥＢＶ 表达４／８ ,而继发者为０／１１。结论：ＥＢＶ 与鼻咽部原发性Ｂ细胞恶性淋巴瘤有较高的相关性,而与继发性者无关。     

FIELD TRIAL OF Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis PELLET FORMULATION IN THE CONTROL OF MOSQUITOES

In a simulated field trial Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis (BTI) pellet formulation exhibited an enhanced efficacy with increasing dose. A dosage of 1.0 and 1.5 ppm was most effective under simulated field conditions. In field trials persistence of BTI pellet (1.0 ppm) was observed for 35 days in moderately polluted water collection as compared to 21 days in highly polluted water bodies.KEY WORDS: Bacillus thuringiensis, Malaria, Mosquito control     

Recent developments in clinimetric instruments

Summary.  Assessment of impairment and function is essential in order to monitor joint status and evaluate therapeutic interventions in patients with haemophilia. The improvements in the treatment of haemophilia have required the development of more sensitive tools to detect the more minor dysfunctions that may now be apparent. This paper outlines some of the recent developments in this field. The Haemophilia Joint Health Score (HJHS) provides a systematic and robust measure of joint impairment. The MRI Scoring System has been designed to provide a comprehensive scoring system combining both progressive and additive scales. The Functional Independence Score for Haemophilia (FISH) has been developed to assess performance of functional activities and can be used in conjunction with the Haemophilia Activities List (HAL) which provides a self report measure of function. It is recommended that both measures are evaluated as these tools measure different constructs. Further refinement and testing of the psychometric properties of all of these tools is in progress. More widespread use of these tools will enable the sharing of data across the world so promoting best practice and ultimately enhancing patient care.     

Synthesis of neuropeptide Y*

Neuropeptide Y (NPY), a hexatriacontapeptide amide, was synthesized on benzhydrylamine resin. The peptide product obtained by HF treatment contained 63% of the target peptide, NPY. A comparison of the chemical, immuno-chemical and biological properties of the synthetic peptide with natural NPY indicated that they were identical.     

Partial Purification and Properties of Lysosomes from Rabbit Testes

Rabbit testes lysosomes were prepared by differential centrifugation and density gradient centrifugation on Percoll. The particulate material sedimented at 1.054 g/cm3. The enrichment in the activities of lysosomal marker enzymes was 9-fold. The contamination by other subcellular organelles such as mitochondria, microsomes and the plasma membrane was limited to 0.1% or less. The marker enzymes of isolated lysosomes exhibited bound activity of 80%, thus indicating the integrity of granules. The testicular lysosomes also exhibited osmofragility characteristics.     

Expression of complement regulatory proteins on erythrocytes from patients with idiopathic focal segmental glomerulosclerosis

SUMMARY: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a heterogeneous group of disorders with respect to aetiology, morphology, clinical course and response to treatment. The present study assessed the expression of complement receptor 1 (CR1), decay accelerating factor (DAF) and membrane inhibitor of reactive lysis (CD59) on the erythrocytes of FSGS patients using flow cytometry compared with their expression on the erythrocytes of minimal change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) patients. Significantly reduced expression of CR1, DAF and CD59 was observed on the erythrocytes of FSGS patients compared with the reduced expression of CR1 and enhanced expression of DAF on the erythrocytes of MCNS patients. A significant inverse relationship was demonstrated between CR1 expression and proteinuria levels in FSGS patients ( r = 0.55, P < 0.01). A follow-up study of 12 patients with FSGS after immunosuppressive therapy showed that the levels of complement regulatory proteins are significantly increased when the disease goes into remission. However, in patients not responding to immunosuppressive therapy, levels of these proteins remained low. MCNS patients showed significant increases in CR1 and decreases in DAF expression during remission of the disease.
