The aim of this study was to measure the alterations in serum trace elements, including zinc and copper in patients with chronic hepatitis C and to compare them with the results of healthy individuals. Seventeen patients with chronic hepatitis C and 17 healthy individuals were included in this study. Serum zinc and cooper concentrations were measured by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer of patients with chronic hepatitis C and the results were statistically compared with those of healthy individuals. Serum zinc concentrations were 105.6+/-22.8 microg/dl in patients with chronic hepatitis C and 94.41+/-19 microg/dl in healthy controls, respectively. Serum copper concentrations were 103.17+/-20.8 microg/dl in patients with chronic hepatitis C and 90.8+/-14.3 microg/dl in healthy subjects, respectively. Serum zinc and copper concentrations were not found statistically different in patients with chronic hepatitis C compared with those of healthy individuals (p>0.05). In conclusion, serum trace element concentrations did not show statistical alterations in patients with chronic hepatitis C compared to healthy subjects. 相似文献

Blunt pelvic and perineal trauma has been previously reported to result in site-specific veno-occlusive dysfunction and/or site-specific cavernosal artery insufficiency. We herein describe a case of erectile dysfunction in a young previously potent amputee. We postulate that the erectile dysfunction is associated with a newly described form of blunt trauma, that is, site-specific compression from a perineal weight-bearing lower extremity above-knee prosthetic device. It is hypothesized that when the force exerted by the above-knee prosthesis is directed medially towards the ischiopubic ramus, the penile crura and common penile arterial blood supply become susceptible to crush-like injury, since they are in fixed anatomic locations in the perineum sandwiched between the compressive force and the bone. Clinical evaluation of the erectile dysfunction in this patient revealed site-specific corporal veno-occlusive dysfunction and site-specific common penile arterial occlusive pathology in the precise region of the contact of the above-knee prosthesis with the perineum. Further research is needed in above-knee prosthesis design to prevent erectile dysfunction. 相似文献

PurposeDiabetic cardiac neuropathy, which is characterized by reduced heart rate variability (HRV), frequently coexists with peripheral neuropathy. Gabapentin has been used for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy. We aimed to evaluate the possible effect of gabapentin treatment on autonomic function in patients with type 2 diabetes via HRV.MethodsThirty patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and peripheral neuropathy and 28 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were consecutively registered. Each patient underwent HRV measurements, and diabetic patients were administered gabapentin. After 3 months of gabapentin therapy, HRV parameters were measured again.ResultsBaseline HRV parameters were blunted in patients with diabetes mellitus according to the controls [standard deviation of all NN intervals (SDNN, ms): 106.3±29.9 vs. 148.8±36.5, P=.001; power spectrum of the high-frequency band (HF, ms2): 133.6±98.3 to 231.4±197.6, P=.02; power spectrum of the low-frequency band (LF, ms2): 341.8±247.8 to 511.5±409.4, P=.048; LF/HF ratio: 3.3±2.4 to 2.6±1.5, P=.33]. After 3 months of treatment with gabapentin, some HRV parameters showed some improvement. SDNN (106.2±29.8 to 119.4 ± 25, P=.016) and HF (133.6±98.3 to 167.6±118.3, P=.021) increased significantly. LF/HF ratio decreased (from 3.3±2.4 to 2.3±1.9, P=.039) and LF remained unchanged (341.8±247.8 to 352.3±228.9, P=.88).ConclusionsTherapeutic doses of gabapentin not only alleviate neuropathic symptoms but also improve cardiac autonomic function in diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy. 相似文献

Aim In recent years significant progress has been made in identifying and quantitating physico-chemical processes involved in
urinary stone formation. The ability of urine to inhibit calcium oxalate crystallization is an important mechanism against
stone formation. Dietary factors appear to affect the ability of urine to inhibit calcium oxalate crystallization. These factors
encouraged us to study the effects of lemon and orange juices on calcium oxalate crystallization in vitro.
Material and methods The nucleation and aggregation of calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals were studied using turbidimetric 30-min time course
measurements of optic density at 620 nm after mixing solutions containing calcium chloride and sodium oxalate at 37°C, pH 5.7.
The formation of crystals is induced by the addition of the oxalate and calcium solution. The effects on calcium oxalate crystal
growth of trisodium citrate, lemon and orange juices were examined. The effects of lemon and orange juices were evaluated
by the addition of 50 ml of juices. The optical density is measured at physiological conditions. The maximum increase of optic
density with time, termed SN, reflects maximum rate of formation of new particles. After an equilibrium has been reached, a progressive decrease of optic
density with time is observed. Rate of aggregation, SA, is derived from the maximum decrease in optic density.
Results Among the modifiers studied, citrate decreased both SN and SA (P < 0.001). Lemon juice was also found to inhibit the rate of crystal nucleation and aggregation. But orange juice did not
have any effect on the calcium oxalate crystallization (P > 0.05).
Conclusion These results show that effective prevention of urinary stone formation should aim at restoring the urine’s ability to inhibit
calcium oxalate crystallization and more emphasis should be given to dietary measures. 相似文献

Agitation is one of the most devastating behavioral symptoms in demented patients but there is little evidence about effective and safe pharmacotherapy. We aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of mirtazapine in treatment of agitated patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The consecutive patients with AD who have significant agitation were assigned to a 12-week open-label, prospective study. Patients received mirtazapine 15–30 mg/day. The changes in Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory-Short form (CMAI-SF) scores were primary outcome measurement. The change in Clinical Global Impression-Severity scale (CGI-S) scores and tolerability-safety profile were the secondary efficacy variables. Thirteen of 16 (81.25%) patients completed the study. There was a significant reduction in CMAI-SF and CGI-S between the pre- and post-treatment with mirtzapaine (p < 0.001). The mean baseline score was 26.54 ( ± 5.4) and mean reduction was 10.6 ( ± 7.5) in CMAI-SF. There was no significant side effect and cognitive deterioration. The results of this open-label pilot study suggest that mirtazapine may be an effective choice for treatment of agitated patients with AD. 相似文献

Depression and anxiety are both known to be co-morbid with coronary heart disease. Given the high prevalence of coronary heart
disease today, specifically the aspect of hypertension, it seems more important than ever to investigate whether or not treatment
of these co-morbidities can have an effect on reducing hypertension. This article summarizes the limited amount of literature
that has been published in this area and highlights what we believe to be a missing key element that will guide our own future
research in this area. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This work focuses on the behavior of in vitro calcium oxalate crystallization. The effects of several compounds on the kinetics of calcium oxalate crystallization were examined. METHODS: Rates of nucleation and aggregation of calcium oxalate crystals were derived from 30-min time-course measurements of optic density at 620 nm after mixing solutions containing calcium chloride and sodium oxalate at 37 degrees C, pH 5.7. The maximum increase of optic density with time, termed S(N), mainly reflects maximum rate of formation of new particles and thus crystal nucleation. After equilibrium has been reached, optic density decreases. No new particles were formed due to crystal aggregation. S(A) (the maximum slope of decrease of optic density at 620 nm with time, representing crystal aggregation) is derived from the maximum decrease in optic density. RESULTS: Among the modifiers studied, citrate decreased both S(N) and S(A) (P < 0.001). Magnesium was also found to inhibit the rate of nucleation and crystal aggregation, but it appeared in a non-concentrated manner. Nucleation and aggregation inhibition ratios were related inversely to concentration of albumin (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The growth and agglomeration of calcium oxalate crystals are differently modulated by various compounds. The treatments aiming at inhibiting crystallization of calcium oxalate can be better defined by these findings. And new treatment modalities can be developed. 相似文献
