This study examined the effects of different food sources of protein on energy intake, body weight maintenance, and on the responses of plasma leptin, insulin and adiponectin in chronic high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Obesity was induced in 47 mice with a high-fat diet for 20 weeks. They were divided into five diet groups to test the effects of a higher protein proportion (30% energy), achieved at the expense of carbohydrate. For the next eight weeks, four of the groups were fed diets of chow formulated with whey, soy, red meat or milk while the control group continued on their high-fat diet. The results showed that: (i) increasing the protein : carbohydrate ratio (both at 30% energy) in a high-fat diet did not reduce the level of obesity; (ii) the type of protein added, however, did have a significant effect on the level of obesity attained; (iii) whey protein stabilised weight gain the most, had the strongest satiety effects and also stimulated the highest production of adiponectin; and (iv) whey protein also was associated with the lowest insulin values among all proteins tested. Plasma leptin levels were not affected by any of the diets. Dietary fat remains a potent factor in weight management, but the type and amount of protein may also be important through its effects on food intake. In particular, the apparent decreased appetite associated with increased adiponectin in the whey-based high-protein diet may contribute to stabilised body mass in chronic high-fat diet-induced obesity.  相似文献

summary A new antimicrobial material, Ag-zeolite (Zeomic°), was combined with a commercial tissue conditioner (GC-Soft Liner (GC); 1–5%) and, through monitoring the pH of the growth medium, examined for effects on the in vitro growth and/or acid production of Candida albicans on protein-free and saliva-coated specimens. The effect of incorporation of this agent on the physical property of the lining material was also examined according to the ISO penetration test. Comparison studies were carried out using GC, Coe Comfort (CC) or undecylenate combined GC (1–5%) specimens. Although the pH changes in the media varied depending upon the materials on which the Candida was grown, reverse sigmoidal pH curves were observed with most samples. As compared with GC, the soft lining materials showed, to some extent, an inhibitory effect on the acid production and/or the growth of C. albicans. These inhibitory effects consisted of a delay in the onset of rapid pH decline, decreases in the rate of pH change and increases in minimum pH. In most cases, the inhibitory effects of test specimens were dose-dependent, and zeolite specimens showed a significantly higher antifungal effect, followed by CC and undecylenate-combined GC; GC showed the least antifungal effect. The inhibitory effects of these materials on fungal growth were decreased by the presence of a saliva-coat, particularly with zeolite specimens and CC. However, four of eight 5%-Zeomic° specimens still exhibited perfect growth inhibition in the presence of the salivary pellicle. Furthermore, test specimens containing 2–5% Zeomic° showed a significantly greater effect on the delay in rapid decline of pH, as compared with the other specimens examined. In addition, the significantly higher minimum pH was observed where the yeasts were grown on 4%- and 5%-Zeomic° specimens. The physical properties of all the test specimens conformed with the ISO standard as examined by penetration test. These results taken together suggest that an antimicrobial zeolite-combined tissue conditioner would be a potential aid in denture plaque control.  相似文献

Summary: In an attempt to determine the presence of hypertension in stroke patients and its relationship with hyperinsulinaemia, a case-control study was carried out in the outpatients clinic, Department of Neurology, Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta. Patients included in the study were those who had survived a stroke at least 3 months after the first attack. the exclusion criteria included: diabetes mellitus, renal failure, heart failure, malignancy, myocardial infarction, current antihypertensive and hypolidaemic treatment. Controls were selected from non-stroke patients at the same department matching for sex and age. During the study 51 stroke patients (39 male and 12 female, aged 58.7 ± 10.3 years) and 51 controls (40 male and 11 female, aged 58.6 ± 9.8 years). There were no significant differences in baseline clinical characteristics; namely, smoking, body mass index, blood sugar and blood lipids except triglyceride (169 ± 61 vs 141 ± 60 P<0.05) of cases and controls. Although there was no significant difference of fasting plasma insulin levels (9.3 ± 8.3 vs 8.3 ± 2.6 mU/L, P= >0.05), significantly higher levels of postprandial insulin (94.8 ± 86.7 vs 55.2 ± 49.1 mU/L, P<0.05) were found in cases than controls. There were a significantly higher levels of blood pressure, both systolic (160 ± 24 vs 131 ± 11 mmHg, P<0.05) and diastolic (101 ± 13 vs 79 ± 4 mmHg, P<0.05), and more frequent hypertension defined as BP ± 140/90 mmHg (72.5 vs 2.0%, P<0.05) in cases than controls. No significant difference of plasma insulin levels (94.9 ± 82.3 vs 94.3 ± 119.2 mU/L, P>0.05) between hypertensive and normotensive stroke patients. However, significantly higher levels of insulin (94.3 ± 119.2 mU/L vs 55.2 ± 49.1 mU/L, P<0.05) were found in normotensive stroke patients than controls. the relationship between 2 h post-prandial blood sugar levels and post-prandial insulin levels was positive and nearly significant relationship (r=0.62, P=0.05). the relationship between mean arterial pressure (MAP) and post-prandial insulin levels of the whole patients (cases and controls) were poor but significant (r = 0.22, P<0.05). the relationship between MAP and post-prandial insulin levels are poor and not significant both in stroke patients (r = 0.00, P>0.05) and controls (r = 0.17, P>0.05). the slope of both curves in both scattered diagrams seemed to be slightly different. We conclude that hypertension and post prandial hyperinsulinaemia may play a role in the genesis of stroke, while hyperinsulinaemia may an independent factor.  相似文献

AIM: The objective of the study was to compare the efficacy and safety of tamsulosin hydrochloride and doxazosin in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). METHODS: The safety and efficacy of tamsulosin (0.2 mg) and doxazosin (2 mg) was determined after once daily administration for 6 weeks in an open-label, randomized, multicenter study of 101 men with BPH. The International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS), maximal urinary flow rates (Qmax), average urinary flow rates (Qave) and residual urine were determined at baseline and again at 6 weeks as efficacy parameters. The primary parameters used for safety evaluation were vital signs (blood pressure and heart rate) and adverse events. The number of patients with a clinically significant response to treatment with tamsulosin or doxazosin was determined and defined as those with >20% improvement from the baseline Qmax or >20% decrease in total IPSS. RESULTS: The total IPSS decreased significantly in both the tamsulosin and doxazosin groups compared to baseline. There was a significant difference in the decrease in total IPSS between two groups. Qmax, Qave and residual urine significantly improved only in the tamsulosin group. There were no significant differences in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure or heart rate profile in the tamsulosin group; however, doxazosin resulted in a significant difference in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Tamsulosin was well tolerated; only three patients (6%) in the tamsulosin group reported an adverse event (dizziness) while 11 patients (22%) in the doxazosin group reported an adverse event (dizziness), one of whom withdrew from the study. CONCLUSIONS: Tamsulosin was shown to be more effective than doxazosin in the treatment of LUTS due to BPH.  相似文献
