Summary The effects of pineal gland, an endocrine organ known to affect the physiology of various organs and systems including the hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis, on the morphological characteristics of target organs were investigated in rats after pinealectomy and foetal pineal gland transplantation to a subpial cortical area close to the pinealectomized region.It was demonstrated that weight gain was significantly slower in pinealectomized male rats (p<0.01); pituitary gland weight was lower in the pinealectomized group (p<0.01) and transplantation had no effect on the weight of this organ; weight of adrenal gland and testis were lower after pinealectomy (p<0.01) but restored back to control levels after transplantation; the mitotic activity in seminiferous tubules increased with pinealectomy and returned back to control indexes after transplantation.Research on hypothalamic catecholaminergic content revealed a diminished histofluorescence in pinealectomized rats which showed a potentiated restoration after transplantation.The innervation of the pineal gland was studied by anterograde and retrograde injections of Wheat Germ Agglutinin Horse Radish Peroxidase from superior cervical ganglion and pineal gland, respectively. It was demonstrated that cell bodies were traced both at the transplanted tissue and hypothalamus.In view of these data, the multifunctional and a probable high level homeostatic harmony regulator essence of pineal gland is discussed.The paper has been awarded the 1993 Upjohn prize for Neurosurgical Research of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies.  相似文献

Oxygen-derived free radicals have been implicated in the pathogenesis of tissue injury after ischaemia-reperfusion. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), an active ingredient of honeybee propolis, has been identified as having potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We evaluated the ability of CAPE applied intraperitoneally in reducing tissue injury after ischaemia-reperfusion. To investigate whether treatment with CAPE modifies the concentrations of the endogenous indices of oxidant stress, we examined its effects on a model of flap ischaemia-reperfusion injury in rats. CAPE (10 micromol/kg) was given through the peritoneum before reperfusion. CAPE given intraperitoneally had an inhibitory effect on tissue injury after ischaemia-reperfusion comparable to that of a control group. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of CAPE may contribute to its suppression of tissue injury.  相似文献

Subacute sensory neuronopathy is a paraneoplastic syndrome, which occurs mostly in lung, breast, ovarian malignancies and lymphoma. A 75-yr-old woman who was at the twentieth month of her postoperative follow-up owing to colon adenocarcinoma admitted with subacute sensory neuronopathy. Six months later from the first, neuropathic symptoms liver metastases developed. To the best of our literature review subacute sensory neuronopathy as a preceding sign of recurrence in colon adenocarcinoma has not previously been reported. We conclude that, in the case of subacute sensory neuronopathy without an obvious underlying etiological factor, an occult malignity should always be researched in clinical practice.  相似文献

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common genetically transmitted cardiomyopathy. In patients resistant to medical management, myectomy is the surgical procedure of choice to reduce the symptoms of left ventricular outflow obstruction. Two‐dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (2DTEE) has become part of the operative procedure by decreasing the incidence of postoperative complications. However, because of the three‐dimensional geometry of left ventricular outflow tract, it is unable to comprehensively assess the location and severity of the obstruction and to provide accurate guidance during myectomy. In this study, 10 patients with HCM underwent live/real time three‐dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3DTEE) intra‐operatively to measure the volume of the resected septum. This volume correlated well with the volume of the resected septal muscle directly obtained using a graduating cylinder containing water (r = 0.9, P < 0.000). 3DTEE may be potentially used as an adjunct to guide the surgeon in performing an adequate myectomy with a lower incidence of residual obstruction and complications such as an iatrogenic ventricular septal defect.  相似文献

Aorta to pulmonary artery fistula is an uncommon and potentially fatal condition. This case is of a 48‐year‐old Caucasian male with congestive heart failure and multiple aortic valve replacement surgeries who presented with an acquired ascending aortic aneurysm to pulmonary artery fistula diagnosed using two‐dimensional transthoracic echocardiography via nonstandard imaging windows. Three‐dimensional transthoracic echocardiography using live/real time three‐dimensional color Doppler was used to assess the size of the opening of the fistula, providing additional value. This patient was surgically managed and is doing well 8 months postoperation.  相似文献

Pulmonary resections comprise most of the operations performed in thoracic surgery departments. Diseases like pulmonary cancers, bronchiectasis, pulmonary abscess, tuberculosis and fungal infections are treated surgically by pulmonary resections. One of the important steps of the pulmonary resection is to suture the bronchi through which the air is supplied to the resected pulmonary tissue. Bronchopleural fistula developed in the bronchial stump is encompassed as one of the most important factors affecting mortality and morbidity regarding postoperative complications.  相似文献
