We evaluated long-term dynorphin A-immunoreactivity in the rat area postrema (AP) after the administration of cisplatin. First, rats were given 1, 5 and 10 mg/kg body weight cisplatin (i.p.) and their behavior was monitored for 72 h. We observed a delayed increase in pica 24-72 h after injection, compared to the 24 h before injection. We attributed this to the cisplatin injection. Pica was defined as an increase in the intake of non-nutritional matter such as kaolin. Administration of 1, 5 and 10 mg/kg cisplatin led to an increase in kaolin intake on day 1. Administration of 5 and 10 mg/kg of cisplatin led to decreased intake of laboratory chow (MF) on days 1–3, but 10 mg/kg cisplatin causes an excessive aggravation of their condition. Following this behavioral experiment, we immunohistochemically examined the induction of dynorphin A in the AP at 24, 48 and 72 h post-administration of 1 and 5 mg/kg cisplatin. Administration of 5 mg/kg cisplatin caused dynorphin A to accumulate gradually in the neurosoma of the AP neurons, and the numbers of positive AP neurosomata at 48 and 72 h post-administration were higher than following an equal dosage of 0.9% NaCl. These findings suggest that dynorphin A increases in the central nervous system for a long time following administration, and causes certain behavioral and clinical changes, including those related to appetite and nausea.  相似文献

Background: A variety of lasers have been used for the treatment of rosacea. However, treatment of this condition with long-pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser has not been reported yet. Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of long-pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser in two different subtypes (erythematotelangiectatic and papulopustular) of rosacea. Methods: A total of 66 patients were enrolled in the study. All of the patients were treated with long-pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser with 3- to 4-week intervals. Rosacea severity score was assessed by using photographs. Improvement in severity was defined as the percentage reduction in severity scores from baseline to the end of treatment. Patients were also asked about their own opinions of improvement at the end of the treatment. Side effects were also documented. Results: Good to excellent improvement was achieved in up to 50 percent of the patients in the erythematotelangiectatic and papulopustular groups. Percent improvement of global severity was significantly greater in the erythematotelangiectatic patients than in the papulopustular patients. The majority of patients from both groups noted a significant improvement of the lesions. Hypopigmented atrophic scars were seen in two patients. Conclusion: The long-pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet laser is a safe and effective treatment for vascular and inflammatory lesions of rosacea.Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory cutaneous disorder with periods of exacerbations and remissions. Clinical findings are characterized by flushing, erythema, telangiectasia, papules, and pustules. There are four recognized subtypes—erythematotelangiectatic (ETR), papulopustular (PPR), phymatous, and ocular.1 Although angiogenic and sebaceous factors have been implicated in the etiopathology of the disease, it remains unclear. Vascular abnormalities, dermal matrix degeneration, environmental factors, and microorganisms may have a potential role in the development of rosacea.2Rosacea may significantly affect patients’ lives, leading to considerable psychological and social distress over appearance. Therefore, management of this condition is very important. There is no definite cure. Electrosurgery and lasers can be used to decrease vascular lesions.3 Topical and/or oral antibiotics can be used to suppress the inflammatory lesions. Although these methods are moderately successful in controlling symptoms, relapse usually occurs shortly after the cessation of therapy.4,5Many types of lasers and light devices have been increasingly used in the treatment of rosacea. However, the role of long-pulsed neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Nd:YAG) laser in this condition has not been well-studied. BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present paper was to investigate the corrected QT (QTc) interval and QTc dispersion value, and the impact of haemodialysis on these parameters in children with chronic renal failure. METHODS: Nineteen patients with chronic renal failure receiving haemodialysis were included in the present study. Electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography and serum biochemistry were performed in all patients. Serum electrolyte levels were measured before and after haemodialysis, at the time of the ECG. Nineteen healthy age- and sex-matched children served as the control group. RESULTS: Patients with chronic renal failure had greater QTc interval and QTc dispersion compared to control subjects. The patients' sex, age and presence of hypertension or left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) were not related to QTc interval/dispersion. However, the patients with left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction had significantly greater QTc dispersion value. After haemodialysis session, both QTc interval and QTc dispersion values significantly increased. Serum potassium levels significantly decreased, whereas the calcium level significantly increased after the haemodialysis session. The changes in electrolyte values were not associated with the changes in both QTc interval and QTc dispersion. CONCLUSION: Children receiving haemodialysis may be at greater risk of ventricular arrhythmia and sudden death because QTc dispersion reflects heterogeneous recovery of ventricular excitability.  相似文献

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Two potential problems commonly identified with a denture base incorporating a resilient liner are a failure of the bond between the acrylic resin and resilient liner material and a loss of resiliency of the resilient liner material over time. PURPOSE: This investigation evaluated the effect of storage duration on the tensile bond strength and hardness of acrylic resin- and silicone-based resilient liners that were either heat- or autopolymerized onto denture base acrylic resin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The denture liners investigated were a definitive acrylic resin-based heat-polymerized (Vertex Soft), interim acrylic resin-based autopolymerized (Coe-Soft), definitive silicone-based heat-polymerized (Molloplast-B), and definitive silicone-based autopolymerized (Mollosil Plus) resilient liner. The resilient liners were processed according to manufacturers' instructions. The resilient liner specimens for tensile bond strength testing (n=10) were 10 x 10 x 3 mm and were processed between 2 polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) (Meliodent) blocks (40 x 10 x 10 mm). The resilient liner specimens for hardness testing (n=10) were 20 mm in diameter and 12 mm in height. Specimen shape and liner thickness were standardized. Specimens were stored for 1 day, 1 week, or 1, 3, or 6 months in water at 37 degrees C. Tensile bond strength was measured in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 20 mm/min, and hardness was measured using a Shore A durometer. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were used to analyze the data (alpha=.05). RESULTS: The results indicated that there were significant differences both in the hardness and bond strength values of resilient liner materials. The definitive silicone-based heat-polymerized (Molloplast-B) resilient liner had significantly higher bond strength and lower hardness values than the others. Prolonged exposure to water produced significantly higher hardness values and lower bond strength values. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, specimens of resilient liners immersed in water demonstrated significantly (P<.001) lower bond strength values and higher hardness values over time.  相似文献

Viral infections lead to significant morbidity and mortality in kidney transplant recipients. We evaluated 49 kidney transplant recipients for human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) and BK polyomavirus infections in conjunction with data obtained from 43 donors. The seroprevalence of HHV-8 was 6.9% in donors and 12.2% in recipients. HHV-8 DNA was detected below the limit of quantification (<5000 copies/mL) in a recipient with HHV-8 seropositivity at the pretransplant period and was undetectable at month 3 after transplantation. Transient viruria with BK polyomavirus was recorded in 10.2% of recipients without viremia. Multiple factors contribute to viral reactivation, particularly immunosuppressive treatment. Reduction in maintenance immunosuppression seems beneficial in terms of viral reactivation. At our center, routine use of valganciclovir for antiviral prophylaxis may be effective for the prevention of HHV-8 reactivation.  相似文献

BackgroundThe prevalence of healthcare associated infection (HAI) is generally higher in countries with limited resources than developed countries. To address the high prevalence of HAI, Turkish Ministry of Health introduced a national infection control program in 2005.MethodsDevice associated (DA)-HAIs routinely surveyed included ventilator associated events, urinary catheter associated urinary tract infection and central line associated blood stream infection. Rates in DA-HAI were examined from 2008 to 2017 by type of hospitals, bed capacity, and geographic location of hospitals.ResultsAll DA-HAIs declined significantly from 2008 to 2017 nationally for ventilator associated events from 16.69 to 4.86 per 1,000 device days (IRR = 0.29, P < .0001), catheter associated urinary tract infection from 4.98 to 1.59 per 1,000 catheter days (IRR = 0.31, P < .0001) and central line associated blood stream infection from 5.65 to 2.82 per 1,000 catheter days (IRR = 0.47, P < .0001). The rates for DA-HAIs declined significantly in hospitals with ≥200 beds and <200 bed capacity and in all 4 type of hospitals. By 2017 all DA-HAI had significantly improved across all regions.ConclusionsThe introduction of a new national surveillance system supported by a national infection control program has significantly reduced 3 major DA-HAIs that are associated with risk of treatment failure and death. The next critical step in sustaining this crucial improvement will require timely feedback to hospitals using technology and continued buy-in from clinicians for their commitment to safety associated with DA-HAIs using aspirational DA-HAI rates.  相似文献
