The ultrastructural characteristics of a benign adrenal adenoma that produces deoxycorticosterone and 11-deoxycortisol were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Both large, round mitochondria with a few cristae in the peripheral portion and spherical or oval mitochondria with sacrotubular cristae were observed in adenoma cells. The development of agranular or granular endoplasmic reticulum varied from cell to cell. In some cells, many vacuoles and collagenous fibers were also seen. Thus, the adrenal tumor we examined was composed of the cells derived from the fascicular zone, which are associated with Cushing's syndrome, and the cells of the glomerular zone observed in association with primary aldosteronism.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to clarify how the metabolism of vascular prostacyclin (PGI2) and thromboxane (TX) A2 in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) is involved in aging and development of hypertension. We removed the aortic walls from 5-week-old and 20 to 25-week-old SHR and age-matched Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). At 5 weeks of age, there was no significant difference in basal and maximal (arachidonic acid 0.1 mM) 6-keto-PGF1 alpha production between SHR and WKY, but the TXB2 generation in the SHR aortic wall was markedly enhanced as compared with that in WKY. At 20 to 25 weeks of age, the SHR aortic wall synthesized about 1.5 times more 6-keto-PGF1 alpha in the basal condition and twice as much as in the maximal condition as did the WKY wall. However there was no significant difference in TXB2 production between SHR and WKY. Age-dependent increase of vascular 6-keto-PGF1 alpha was greater in SHR than in WKY. Moreover, the maximal/basal 6-keto-PGF1 alpha production ratio increased with age in SHR, but not in WKY. The synthesis of vascular TXB2 was enhanced with age in WKY, but did not change with age in SHR. These data suggest that not only the enhanced basal generation of vascular 6-keto PGF1 alpha but also a much greater reservoir of 6-keto-PGF 1 alpha synthesis in SHR was induced by both hypertension and maturity. The increased production of vascular TXB2 in young SHR may affect the development of hypertension.  相似文献

Background

Diabetes has been reported as a comorbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Western countries, but it has not been demonstrated in epidemiological reports in Japan. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether the relationship between airflow obstruction and diabetes can be confirmed in a Japanese general population.

Methods

From 2004 to 2006, blood sampling and pulmonary function tests were performed on 3045 people over the age of 40 years in annual health check-ups held in Takahata, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Pulmonary function was re-evaluated in 2009 and 2011.

Results

The prevalence of diabetes did not differ between subjects with and without airflow obstruction. Furthermore, although body mass index decreased, no increase in the prevalence of diabetes was observed with the progression of airflow obstruction. The annual changes in forced expiration volume in 1 s (FEV1) did not differ depending on the presence or absence of diabetes in the study population.

Conclusion

There was no difference in the prevalence of diabetes between subjects with airflow obstruction and those without. As patients with COPD in Japan are thinner than in the West, diabetes may not be a common comorbidity in Japanese patients with COPD.  相似文献

Background:Plasma fibrinogen is considered a biomarker of respiratory disease, owing to the relationship between plasma fibrinogen and pulmonary function established in Western populations. However, such a relationship has not yet been confirmed in an Asian population. We assessed this relationship in the general Japanese population.Methods:Totally, 3,257 men and women aged ≥40 years who participated in a community-based annual health checkup in Takahata, Japan, from 2004 to 2006, underwent spirometry, and their plasma fibrinogen levels were determined.Results:We found an inverse relationship between spirometric measures (percent predicted forced vital capacity [%FVC] and forced expiratory volume in 1s [%FEV1], and FEV1/FVC) and plasma fibrinogen levels in men, but not in women. The plasma fibrinogen levels were significantly higher in subjects with restrictive, obstructive, and mixed ventilatory disorders than in those with normal spirometry results. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that in men, plasma fibrinogen levels were predictive for %FVC and %FEV1 (independent of age, body mass index, and cigarette smoking) but not for FEV1/FVC.Conclusions:Plasma fibrinogen was significantly associated with pulmonary function in Japanese men, and as such, plasma fibrinogen might be a potent biomarker for pulmonary dysfunction in men.  相似文献

Functional and genetic studies suggest that insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) may be a strong functional and positional candidate. As there is a lack of consensus in regards to the level and location of IDE association signals we aimed to clarify these discrepancies through genotyping 28 SNPs in a large case-control collective together with quantitative measures of cognitive ability (MMSE). Four SNPs (rs11187007, rs2149632_ide12, rs11187033, rs11187040) were found to be associated with AD (nominal p<0.01). Tests with MMSE scores adjusted for disease duration identified associations, with the most significant result for rs1999763 (nominal p=0.008). Similarly, different reconstructed IDE haplotypes were associated with AD and higher MMSE scores. The association signals are only borderline significant after adjustment for multiple testing, but add further evidence to previous published results on the association between IDE and AD or MMSE. A subgroup analysis indicated more prominent associations with AD in younger, and with MMSE in older patients. There may be two independent effects mediated by IDE variants, risk for AD and modification of disease progression.  相似文献

Desmoplastic infantile gangliogliomas (DIG) are uncommon supratentorial brain tumors with a usually good prognosis despite an aggressive radiological appearance that typically occurs in infants below the age of 24 months. DIGs are exclusively supratentorial, generally have a voluminous size, and are partially cystic. Total surgical removal is sufficient for the treatment of these tumors, and no chemotherapy or radiotherapy is indicated if complete resection is achieved. Except for age difference, DIG and desmoplastic non-infantile gangliogliomas are radiologically and histologically similar. Non-infantile variants of this biologically benign intracranial neoplasm are rare; only 15 cases of non-infantile DIGs have been reported in the literature. As far as we know, this case is the 16th in literature. We reported the magnetic resonance imaging and histological findings of desmoplastic ganglioglioma in a 6-year-old boy.  相似文献

We reported a 44-year-old Japanese woman with generalized multiple sclerotic plaques, which showed hisological findings of morphea. This patient also had an erosive lesion on her mouth; its histological findings were consistent with lichen planus. A sclerotic lesion on her thigh showed the histological findings of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA). These data suggest that similar etiologic events or closely related pathologic processes are involved in morphea, lichen planus, and LSA.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: There has been some concern that Japanese travelers are not adequately protected against malaria, especially when compared to Western travelers. Multi-national studies of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding malaria risk have previously been conducted in travelers. METHODS: We conducted a KAP study in Japanese travelers using the same standardized questionnaire as the previous studies. Unlike those studies, questionnaires could not be distributed at departure lounges/gates at international airports, and therefore, travelers were sourced from several different study sites, targeting different populations. RESULTS: A total of 212 Japanese travelers who had visited malarious areas were enrolled, of which 63.2% had visited Asia and 28.3% visited sub-Saharan Africa. Significant shortcomings in KAP were noted with respect to lack of knowledge about symptoms of malaria, poor awareness of malaria risk at their destination, and non-adherence to adequate antimosquito measures. Chemoprophylaxis use was lower among Japanese travelers than travelers from other countries, even when confining to those traveling to sub-Saharan Africa. CONCLUSIONS: Japanese travel medicine providers and general practitioners who engage in pre-travel consultation should raise awareness of travelers about the seriousness of malaria, the need for improved compliance with chemoprophylaxis, and the importance of being properly prepared prior to departure.  相似文献
