The N170 is a brain electrical potential proposed to index the earliest time of categorical perception of faces in occipitotemporal visual areas implicated in face cognition, being more negative for faces than nonface objects between 120 and 200 ms. The interstimulus variance (ISV) account instead explained N170 face‐specificity as an artifact due to objects varying more visually than faces. Ganis, Smith, and Schendan (2012) tested this account directly, finding that N170 face‐specificity remains even when ISV is eliminated. Here, N170 peak amplitude and face‐specificity is quantified for individual stimuli and participants, revealing that the right hemisphere N170 is especially sensitive to stimulus variability. Further, ISV contributes 0 to 37% to N170 face‐specificity. These findings provide evidence for optimizing face processing science. The paradigm can apply to any research in which ISV may be uncontrolled (e.g., category comparisons).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Cellular DNA characteristics derived from pretreatment biopsy (PTB) may become important for predicting treatment outcomes in patients with head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC). Whether the PTB adequately represents the whole specimen is of critical importance. Study Design: In a series of >700 HNSCCs, we identified 59 cases in which the PTB and the surgical resection (SR) met the following criteria: PTB and SR were from the same site, and SR was obtained within 5 weeks of PTB with no intervening treatments. RESULTS: Twenty-nine percent of the PTB specimens were DNA diploid. Only 1 of the 11 subsequent DNA diploid SR was associated with a DNA aneuploid PTB (91% concordance). Of the 48 DNA aneuploid tumors, 3 were associated with DNA diploid PTB (94% concordance). Three other DNA aneuploid SRs were associated with PTB of poor quality. CONCLUSION: With respect to DNA ploidy, PTB are representative of SR specimens.  相似文献

Objective: Clinical parameters such as grade, size and/or location of the tumor are good predictors of outcome in patients with astrocytoma. The objective of this study was to determine whether DNA content parameters have a prognostic significance for this group of tumors. Methods: Following optimization and validation of methodology for evaluating cellular DNA content parameters (CDCP), tumor DNA ploidy and percent S phase fraction (SPF) were determined from 64 patients using formalin fixed, paraffin embedded specimens (mean coefficient of variation = 4.94) obtained over a 10-year period. Median survival times correlated with grade (I/II =1154 vs. III/IV= 483days, P=0.0317). Fifty-five percent of the specimens contained DNA aneuploid (DNA-A) components (average SPF=18.3%) and 45% were DNA diploid (DNA-D) (average SPF=9.6%). Survival did not correlate with overall differences in DNA ploidy (DNA-D=181 vs. DNA-A=206days, P=0.6314) when treated and untreated tumors were analyzed. However, a trend for prolonged median survival was observed in patients whose tumors were untreated with respect to cytotoxic therapy based on DNA ploidy status (DNA-D=275 vs. DNA-A=15days, P=0.3408). Survival for all patients did not correlate with median SPF (< 13.5% av.= 121 vs. > 13.5% av.= 154days, P=0.6534).Conclusion: DNA content parameters may correlate with the natural history and treatment outcome of newly diagnosed untreated patients with astrocytomas.Supported by NIH CA 40498–01A1; NIH P30CA22453  相似文献

The mental rotation of objects requires visuospatial functions mediated by the parietal lobes, whereas the mental rotation of hands also engages frontal motor-system processes. Nondemented patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), a frontostriatal disorder, were predicted to be impaired on mentally rotating hands. Side of PD motor symptom onset was investigated because the left motor cortices likely have a causal role in hand mental rotation. The prediction was that patients with right-side onset (RPD, greater left-hemisphere dysfunction) would commit more errors rotating hands than patients with left-side onset (LPD). Fifteen LPD, 12 RPD, and 13 normal control adults (NC) made same/different judgments about pairs of rotated objects or hands. There were no group differences with objects. When rotating hands, RPD, but not LPD, made more errors than the NC group. A control experiment evaluated whether visual field of presentation explained differences between PD subgroups. In the first experiment (1A), the hand to be mentally rotated was presented in the right visual field, but here (1B) it was presented in the left visual field. Only the LPD group made more errors than the NC group. The evidence suggests a double dissociation for the RPD and LPD groups between tasks differing in visual-field presentation. The findings indicate that hemifield location of a to-be-rotated hand stimulus can cause the hemispheric frontoparietal networks to be differentially engaged. Moreover, frontostriatal motor systems and the parietal lobes play a necessary role during the mental rotation of hands, which requires integrating visuospatial cognition with motor imagery.  相似文献

Studies of Parkinson's disease (PD) suggest that cognitive deficits accompany the classically recognized motor symptoms, and that these cognitive deficits may result from damage to frontal-basal ganglia circuits. PD patients are impaired on ordering events and action components into coherent sequences. In this study, we examined early-stage, nondemented, medicated PD subjects and matched control subjects during a semantic event sequencing task using functional MRI (fMRI). The task required subjects to examine four pictures of meaningful events, determine the correct temporal relationship between each picture, and re-order the pictures into a coherent sequence. There were two main findings. First, we found abnormal activation within the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the "default" network in the PD group. Distinct areas of the PFC showed both hypoactivation and hyperactivation, whereas the "default" network showed reduced levels of resting activation in PD. Secondly, we observed left caudate hyperactivation in the PD group. The findings are discussed in relationship to how more activation may be compensatory, but does not necessarily mean efficient and correlated brain function.  相似文献

Categorization of visual objects entails matching a percept to long-term representations of structural knowledge. This object model selection is central to theories of human visual cognition, but the representational format(s) is largely unknown. To characterize these neural representations, event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to fragmented objects during an indirect memory test were compared when only local contour features, but not global shapes of the object and its parts, differed between encoding and retrieval experiences. The ERP effects revealed that the format of object representations varies across time according to the particular neural processing and memory system currently engaged. An occipito-temporal P2(00) showed implicit memory modulation to items that repeatedly engaged similar perceptual grouping processes but not items that merely reinstantiated visual features. After 500 msec, memory modulation of a late positive complex, indexing secondary categorization and/or explicit recollection processes, was sensitive to local contour changes. In between, a frontocentral N350, indexing the model selection and an implicit perceptual memory system, showed reactivation of object representations whenever the same global shapes were reactivated, despite local feature differences. These and prior N350 findings provide direct neurophysiological evidence that the neural representations supporting object categorization include knowledge beyond local contours and about higher-order perceptual structures, such as the global shapes of the object and its parts, that can differ between object views. The N350 is proposed to index a second state of interactive, recurrent, and feedback processing in occipital and ventral temporal neocortex supporting higher-order cognitive abilities and phenomenological awareness with objects.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the correlation between flow cytometrically measured DNA ploidy with prognostically important histopathologic groups and clinical outcome in patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands. STUDY DESIGN: 46 tumor specimens were analyzed flow cytometrically for DNA content and assessed for histological grade. Correlations were made between tumor DNA ploidy and histopathological grade, and disease-free and overall survival of these patients. RESULTS: Of the 46 patients, 31 had a cribiform/tubular histologic pattern, and 15 had a solid pattern. 84% of the tumors with cribriform/tubular pattern were DNA diploid, compared with 33% of tumors that were graded solid. This difference proved to be statistically significant (chi(2)11.75, P = 0.0006). Overall and disease-free survival periods were longer for patients with DNA diploid tumors in both groups, 63% vs. 36% and 62% vs 38%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Tumor DNA ploidy correlates with prognostically important tumor histopathology as well as overall and disease-free survival in patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland.
