The visual acuity, the difference in sensitivity of the two eyes to light (brightness ratio), and contrast sensitivity were assessed in 28 patients with chronic open angle glaucoma and compared with those of 41 normal controls of similar ages and visual acuity. The results obtained were related to the results of Tübingen visual field analysis in patients with glaucoma. Twenty-four of the 28 glaucoma patients (86%) had a significant disparity in brightness ratio between the two eyes. This was found to match the frequency of visual field loss. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between the interocular differences in brightness sense and the difference in the degree of visual field loss between the two eyes. Of the glaucoma patients 39% had sum contrast sensitivities outside the normal range for age-matched normal controls. No significant correlation was found between the interocular difference in brightness sense and the visual acuity or the interocular difference in sum contrast sensitivity. It is concluded that, in the presence of a normal visual acuity, the brightness ratio test warrants evaluation as a potential screening test for chronic open angle glaucoma.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that bovine retinas incubated with [3H]galactose incorporated it, unmodified, into large molecules. Light and electron microscope autoradiography showed a significant proportion of the label to be in cone inner segments, and pulse-chase studies showed it was subsequently transported to the synaptic pedicles. In this report, evidence is presented to show that the galactose-labelled macromolecules are resistant to hydrolysis by proteolytic enzymes, testicular hyaluronidase, chondroitinase ABC, beta-glucosidase and beta-glucuronidase, but are readily degraded by alpha-amylase and beta-galactosidase, and to a lesser extent by beta-amylase. Treatment with alpha-amylase also leads to specific removal of radioactivity from cone inner segments and pedicles, as judged by light-microscopic autoradiography. These studies appear to indicate that the cone-specific galactose label is in glycogen or glycogen-like molecules.  相似文献

mRNA for the suppressive epitope of p15E was found to be present in 24 of 30 samples of human colorectal cancer and in all four specimens of gastric cancer. mRNA for p15E was seldom seen in nonmalignant colonic or gastric mucosa but, when present, was associated with inflammatory or pre-malignant conditions of the digestive tract. Synthetic peptides derived from the conserved p15E sequence were found to suppress some aspects of the immune response implicated in anti-tumour activity. These data suggest that a p15E-related material with immunomodulatory properties is elaborated within human tumours, either by the tumour itself or as a normal component of the endogenous anti-tumour reaction.  相似文献

Small portions of dehydrated hydrophilic polymer (HPU 90, Smith and Nephew) have been inserted into the suprachoroidal space in rabbits to investigate the possible use of suprachoroidal plombage in retinal detachment surgery. As it hydrates, the material causes a pronounced elevation of choroid and retina, and the implants have been well tolerated for periods of up to one year in experimental animals. The implant slowly breaks down and stimulates a simple macrophagic reaction: fibrosis in the overlying choroid is associated with ischaemic gliosis and chorioretinal fusion.  相似文献
