Tanzania IR Initiative: Training the First Generation of Interventional Radiologists

Despite a population of nearly 60 million, there is currently not a single interventional radiologist in Tanzania. Based on an Interventional Radiology (IR) Readiness Assessment, the key obstacles to establishing IR in Tanzania are the lack of training opportunities and limited availability of disposable equipment. An IR training program was designed and initiated, which relies on US-based volunteer teams of IR physicians, nurses, and technologists to locally train radiology residents, nurses, and technologists. Preliminary results support this strategy for addressing the lack of training opportunities and provide a model for introducing IR to other resource-limited settings.     

Muscular activation patterns of healthy persons and low back pain patients performing a functional capacity evaluation test

The results of most reported studies show differences between the muscular activity of low back pain patients and healthy subjects, but the focus has usually been on trunk muscles only, and they have not involved work-related tests or exercises. The reintegration of chronic low back pain patients to job market is a common problem. Therefore assessment systems like the functional capacity evaluation (FCE) according to Isernhagen [S.J. Isernhagen, Work Injury: Management and Prevention, Aspen Publishers Inc., Gaithersburg, MD, 1988] are often used tools to determine the physical abilities and deficits of long-time incapacitated persons. The aim of the present study was to compare the healthy persons and chronic low back pain patients in performing a FCE-test and to analyse their muscular activation and motion patterns. The results indicate differences in the activation patterns of the groups in the test task “floor to waist lift” common in many occupations.     

Malignant astrocytomas treated with iodine-125 labeled monoclonal antibody 425 against epidermal growth factor receptor: a phase II trial.

Twenty-five patients with primary presentation of malignant astrocytoma, astrocytoma with anaplastic foci, and glioblastoma multiforme were treated with surgical resection and definitive radiation therapy followed by intravenous or intra-arterial administration of Iodine-125 labeled monoclonal antibody-425, which binds specifically to human epidermal growth factor receptor. The patients presented with primary untreated disease, positive contrast enhanced computed tomography scans of the brain, and compatible clinical symptoms. In this Phase II clinical trial, the patients had surgical debulking or biopsy followed by definitively administered external beam radiation therapy and one or multiple doses (35 to 90 mCi per infusion) of radiolabeled antibody. The total cumulative doses ranged from 40 to 224 mCi. The administrations of the radiolabeled antibody were performed in most cases 4-6 weeks following completion of the primary surgery and radiation therapy. Ten patients had astrocytoma with anaplastic foci and 15 had glioblastoma multiforme. No significant life-threatening toxicities were observed during this trial. At 1 year 60% of the patients with astrocytoma with anaplastic foci or glioblastoma multiforme are alive. The median survival for both groups was 15.6 months.
