The capacity of Syrian hamster female protein (FP), a phosphorylcholine (PC)-binding pentraxin, to activate complement was tested in an in vitro system consisting of PC-coupled sheep red blood cells and guinea pig serum as the complement (C) source. FP was demonstrated to fix complement as reflected by hemolysis. Such hemolysis was eliminated by heat treatment (56 degrees C, 30 min) of guinea pig serum and inhibited by PC chloride but not dinitrophenyl lysine. The inability of C4-deficient guinea pig serum to provide lytic activity indicated that lysis proceeded through the classical hemolytic pathway.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess and compare cognitive functioning in adults with unilateral hemispheric injury due to either congenital damage or an ischemic event in young adulthood. METHOD: Adults with cerebral palsy resulting from left hemispheric brain damage were compared with adults who had a unilateral stroke in either the left or the right hemisphere. Our primary interest was to determine the impact on hemispheric dominance as revealed by dichotic listening, a task that assesses the bias for preferential listening and processing of sounds. Performance also was determined on a language-related task (word finding) and a spatial task (dot localization). RESULTS: Scores on the Quick Neurological Screening Test indicated that all participants demonstrated significant neuromotor deficits, whereas scores on the Barthel Index indicated that the participants were functional in basic activities of daily living. On cognitive assessments, healthy control participants demonstrated a pronounced left-hemisphere dominance and right-ear advantage; participants with injury to the left hemisphere showed a strong shift toward a right-hemisphere and left-ear dominance. In particular, injury of congenital origin appeared to foster this neural reorganization and localization of language-related functions into the healthy hemisphere. This shift was associated with a deterioration of performance on both the language and the spatial tasks. CONCLUSION: The importance of appreciating subtle deficits after unilateral injury is important in therapy. The dichotic listening test may provide a simple and useful means for evaluating persistent unilateral brain dysfunction in the clinical setting.  相似文献

The following study investigated the diurnal variation in body temperature of the young monkey infant and assessed the role that the mother plays in the development of the temperature rhythm. Using an implantable biotelemetry system, core body temperature and motoric activity were evaluated in maternally-reared and hand-reared rhesus monkey infants across the first several months of life. Our results indicated that the nocturnal temperatures of hand-reared infants are lower than those of mother-reared infants at one month of age, and that there are persistent differences in the orientation and shape of the diurnal temperature rhythm. The initial thermal challenge and the prolonged rhythm shift may have implications for the normal development of several physiological systems in the hand-reared infant monkey.  相似文献

Milk and orange juice (OJ) fortified with calcium-citrate-malate (CCM; calcium-citrate-malate salt is a coined term to describe a trademarked calcium delivery system found only in Citrus Hill Plus Calcium) were evaluated for their potential to alter urine chemistries and crystallization during the course of an eleven week, crossover study. Six male and six female, non-stone-forming, idiopathic hypercalciuric adults consumed 600 mg per day as beverage calcium for four consecutive weeks. The results show that both milk and CCM-fortified OJ (CCM-OJ) were well tolerated by male and female hypercalciurics since few significant changes occurred in overall urinary chemistry profiles. CCM-OJ did, however, significantly (P less than or equal to 0.05) increase urinary pH relative to milk in both sexes and urinary citrate concentration in women only. Both of these urinary parameters were significantly increased by CCM-OJ in both sexes relative to the basal period. The combined pH and citrate effects are recognized to protect against calcium oxalate stone formation through formation of the soluble calcium citrate salt. These data indicate that either milk or CCM-fortified orange juice can be consumed, at least within the limits tested, as a dietary source of calcium without increasing the risk of stone formation in a calcium-sensitive subpopulation. That the urine chemistries and crystallization of such calcium-sensitive individuals does not significantly change with the consumption of either beverage implies that the urine of normal individuals would be exceedingly unlikely to change as well.  相似文献

Bidirectional steady-state calcium fluxes were measured in vitro under short-circuited conditions in segments of rat duodenum and descending colon. The calcium-activated ATPase (Ca-ATPase) inhibitor trifluoperazine (TFP, 0.1 mM) reduced net calcium absorption in both tissues by decreasing the absorptive flux from mucosa to serosa (Jm leads to s) without consistently altering the secretory flux from serosa to mucosa. 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 administration (50 ng/day for 4 days) increased net calcium absorption by increasing Jm leads to s, and TFP reduced Jm leads to s to the same extent across tissues from vehicle- or 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3-treated animals. Na-K-ATPase inhibitors ouabain and ethacrynic acid both reduced short-circuit current without affecting calcium fluxes. These data suggest that Ca-ATPase, located in the basolateral membrane of intestinal epithelial cells, plays a role in the transepithelial transport of calcium. More general effects of TFP on intestinal epithelium may also contribute to the reduction in calcium fluxes. Duodenal and descending colon calcium transport appears independent of transcellular sodium transport mediated by Na-K-ATPase.  相似文献

The influence of dominance on the pituitary-adrenal and gonadal systems was evaluated in male squirrel monkeys. Basal and stress levels of plasma cortisol and testosterone were determined in eight male pairs across a 5-week period. The data indicated that squirrel monkeys have unusually high levels of steroid hormones in comparison to other species. Dominant males had higher levels of cortisol and testosterone and showed a smaller stress response than did subordinate males.  相似文献
