Safety evaluation of surgical materials by cytotoxicity testing 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The cytotoxicity of three kinds of commercially available absorbable hemostats [oxidized cellulose (Surgicel, gauze and cotton
types), microfibrillar collagen (Avitene), and cotton-type collagen (Integran)] and one adhesion barrier [sodium hyaluronate
and carboxymethyl-cellulose membrane (Seprafilm)] were comparatively assessed by a colony assay using V79 cells and a minimum
essential medium (MEM) elution assay in combination with a neutral red assay using L929 cells. Strong cytotoxicity was detected
for Surgicel by both the MEM elution assay and the colony assay. For Avitene, both methods revealed weak cytotoxicity. For
Seprafilm, no cytotoxicity was detected by the MEM elution assay, while a moderate degree of cytotoxicity was observed in
the colony assay. For Integran cytotoxicity was not detected by either the MEM elution or the colony assay. The results of
the different methods showed some inconsistency in terms of the degree of cytotoxicity of the materials. It is proposed that
the combination of two or more sensitive cytotoxicity testing methods for the evaluation of biomaterials is necessary to avoid
false-negative results for biomaterials at the preclinical stage. Furthermore, investigation of the correlation between the
cytotoxicity and the extraction period of the surgical materials is helpful for predicting the effect of prolonged in vivo
use of biomaterials on surrounding cells, tissues, and organs. 相似文献

Widal test in diagnosis of typhoid fever in Turkey 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We studied the value of the Widal tube agglutination test for the diagnosis of typhoid fever. The subjects were all adults >18 years of age and were divided into four groups: (i) 317 healthy blood donor controls, (ii) 31 bacteriologically confirmed patients with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi, (iii) 21 patients with a clinical diagnosis of typhoid fever, and (iv) 41 febrile nontyphoid patients. Blood donor controls were screened with a slide agglutination test for the Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi O and H antigens, and positives were then tested with the Widal test. Acute- and convalescent-phase sera from patients in groups 2, 3, and 4 were obtained 7 to 10 days apart and tested by the Widal test. Using a cutoff of >or = 1/200 for the O antigen test performed on acute-phase serum gave a sensitivity of 52% and a specificity of 88% with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 76% and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 71%. This increased to 90% sensitivity and specificity with a PPV of 88% and an NPV of 93% when the convalescent-phase serum was tested. We concluded that O and H agglutinin titers of > or = 1/200 are of diagnostic significance. The Widal test is easy, inexpensive, and relatively noninvasive. It can be of diagnostic value when blood cultures are not available or practical. The results must be interpreted cautiously because of the low sensitivity of the test. The Widal test done on convalescent-phase serum gave more-reliable results with higher specificity and sensitivity. 相似文献

Neurosensory deficits are the most common complication following orthognathic surgery. Le Fort I and sagittal split ramus osteotomies have been widely studied but there is a lack of data about the neurosensory alterations resulting from anterior maxillary osteotomy (AMO). This paper evaluates the neurosensory alterations in cutaneous regions including lower eyelid, cheek, nose, upper lip and vestibular and palatal mucosal areas using simple clinical tests following AMO performed with Bell's incision so patients can be properly informed about the extent of sensory loss and its rate of recovery following AMO. Twenty-four sides of 12 patients (eight females; four males) with a mean age of 14.20 ± 1.86 years (range 12–17 years) were examined. Pin prick sensation, light touch sensation, static and dynamic two-point discrimination tests were used. Following AMO, vestibular mucosa, upper lip, nose and cheek were the most commonly affected sites. No alterations were detected in lower eyelid and palatal mucosa. The neurosensory deficits in cheek, nose and upper lip resolved 10 days after surgery. The vestibular mucosa showed normal sensation on day 30. In conclusion, following AMO, neurosensory alterations can occur, but it will resolve spontaneously in 30 days. 相似文献

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) carries one of the highest mortality rates among vascular diseases when it ruptures. To predict the role of surface curvature in rupture risk assessment, a discriminatory analysis of aneurysm geometry characterization was conducted. Data was obtained from 205 patient-specific computed tomography image sets corresponding to three AAA population subgroups: patients under surveillance, those that underwent elective repair of the aneurysm, and those with an emergent repair. Each AAA was reconstructed and their surface curvatures estimated using the biquintic Hermite finite element method. Local surface curvatures were processed into ten global curvature indices. Statistical analysis of the data revealed that the L2-norm of the Gaussian and Mean surface curvatures can be utilized as classifiers of the three AAA population subgroups. The application of statistical machine learning on the curvature features yielded 85.5% accuracy in classifying electively and emergent repaired AAAs, compared to a 68.9% accuracy obtained by using maximum aneurysm diameter alone. Such combination of non-invasive geometric quantification and statistical machine learning methods can be used in a clinical setting to assess the risk of rupture of aneurysms during regular patient follow-ups. 相似文献
