PURPOSETo use functional MR imaging to measure the effect of frequency (pitch), intensity (loudness), and complexity of auditory stimuli on activation in the primary and secondary auditory cortexes.METHODSMultiplanar echo-planar images were acquired in healthy subjects with normal hearing to whom auditory stimuli were presented intermittently. Functional images were processed from the echo-planar images with conventional postprocessing methods. The stimuli included pure tones with a single frequency and intensity, pure tones with the frequency stepped between 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, or 4,000 Hz, and spoken text. The pixels activated by each task in the transverse temporal gyrus (TTG) and the auditory association areas were tabulated.RESULTSThe pure tone task activated the TTG. The 1,000-Hz tone activated significantly more pixels in the TTG than did the 4,000-Hz tone. The 4,000-Hz tone activated pixels primarily in the medial TTG, whereas the 1,000-Hz tone activated more pixels in the lateral TTG. Higher intensity tones activated significantly more pixels than did lower intensity tones at the same frequency. The stepped tones activated more pixels than the pure tones, but the difference was not significant. The text task produced significantly more activation than did the pure tones in the TTG and in the auditory association areas. The more complex tasks (stepped tones and listening to text) tended to activate more pixels in the left hemisphere than in the right, whereas the simpler tasks activated similar numbers of pixels in each hemisphere.CONCLUSIONAuditory stimuli activate the TTG and the association areas. Activation in the primary auditory cortex depends on frequency, intensity, and complexity of the auditory stimulus. Activation of the auditory association areas requires more complex auditory stimuli, such as the stepped tone task or text reading.  相似文献

PURPOSETo study the relationship of lumbar facet joint tropism to degeneration of the cartilage and subcortical bone in the facet joints and the effect of tropism in intervertebral disk degeneration.METHODSThe orientation of 104 cadaveric lumbar facet joints with respect to sagittal plane was measured on CT scans, and the joints were classified as having no tropism, mild tropism, or severe tropism. On MR images, the severity of cartilage degeneration and bony sclerosis was measured. The correlation between tropism and degeneration was calculated, as was the relationship among age, spinal level, and degeneration.RESULTSWe identified four spinal levels with severe tropism, six with moderate tropism, and 94 without tropism. Cartilage degeneration was not significantly more severe in the joints with tropism than in the joints without. Sclerosis was slightly greater in the joints with tropism than in the joints without it. Sclerosis and cartilage degeneration were significantly related to age and spinal level.CONCLUSIONAge, spinal level, and overall facet joint angle are more important factors in facet joint degeneration than is tropism.  相似文献

Truncation artifacts occur in MR imaging because Fourier transforms are used to process MR signal data. These artifacts may alter the intensity, shape, and anatomic detail of structures in the spine. Ring artifacts (Gibb phenomenon) occurring near highly contrasting interfaces represent but one manifestation of truncation artifacts visible on MR images. We review truncation phenomena by providing graphic and phantom models. Ways in which truncation artifacts alter the MR appearance of the spine are discussed. We found that truncation phenomena are reduced most effectively by using a 256 x 256 matrix whenever feasible.  相似文献

PURPOSETo determine the feasibility of measuring diffusion into human intervertebral disks by means of MR imaging with an intravenous nonionic gadolinium complex (gadoteridol).METHODSIn 18 patients undergoing lumbar spine MR imaging, signal intensity was measured in the intervertebral disks after a dose of 0.1 mmol/kg and after a supplemental dose of 0.2 mmol/kg.RESULTSSignal intensity in the intervertebral disks increased with both gadoteridol doses. A greater increase was consistently achieved with the 0.3 mmol/kg (total) dose than with the 0.1 mmol/kg dose. The increase was greater near the endplates than in the midportion of the disk.CONCLUSIONDiffusion into human intervertebral disks can be detected with MR imaging after intravenous administration of gadoteridol. MR imaging with a paramagnetic contrast medium can be used to study diffusion into disk cartilage in vivo and noninvasively.  相似文献

The effect of chemical shift on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the pituitary fossa was studied. Healthy volunteers underwent conventional MR imaging of the pituitary fossa and then imaging with the frequency-encoding gradient reversed or with the phase- and frequency-encoding gradients interchanged. Comparison of the image pairs in each subject showed that the thin, black stripe evident at the water-fat interface within the pituitary fossa was altered when the gradients were changed. Therefore, the low-intensity signal within the pituitary fossa is a chemical shift misregistration effect.  相似文献

In this investigation the association of radial tears of the anulus fibrosus and bulging of the intervertebral disk was studied. An index of disk bulging was measured in sagittal anatomic sections in 149 lumbar disks from 31 cadavers. The indexes of disk bulging were correlated with stages of disk development and the presence of an annular tear. The largest disk-bulging indexes were always associated with radial tears of the anulus. Eighty-four percent of the disks with radial tears had disk-bulging indexes greater than 2.5 mm. Most normal adult disks had an index of less than 2.5 mm. The results challenge the concept that the anulus fibrosus is intact in bulging disks, although ruptured in herniated disks.  相似文献

PURPOSETo evaluate the spatial specificity of functional MR imaging by comparing it with intraoperative electrocortical mapping.METHODSFunctional MR imaging was performed in 28 patients before awake craniotomy and intraoperative electrocortical mapping. Activation was mapped for finger movement, lip movement, tongue movement, word generation, and counting paradigms. During surgery, finger movement, lip movement, tongue movement, counting, and/or speaking were mapped. The functional images and the photographic recordings of the brain functions mapped during surgery were converted to bit maps and coregistered by a computer program. The distance between the intraoperatively mapped function site and the MR activation site for a comparable function was measured.RESULTSForty-six functions were recorded on MR images and intraoperative maps. In 100% of correlations, the intraoperative site and the MR activation site were within 20 mm; in 87% of correlations they were within 10 mm. For each paradigm, 67% or more of the intraoperative stimulation maps correlated within 10 mm of the MR activation site.CONCLUSIONSFor the tasks used in this study, the activation site on functional MR images correlated well with the site at which intraoperative stimulation identified function.  相似文献
