Although iophendylate (Pantopaque) has been largely replaced by water soluble agents for myelography, retained intracranial or intraspinal Pantopaque remains a common occurrence. Pantopaque has signal characteristics similar to fat with both short T1 and T2 relaxation times. In vitro measurements revealed T1 = 170 ms and T2 = 27 ms. Spine radiography is recommended in patients with a history of previous myelography and magnetic resonance abnormalities similar to fat.  相似文献

The distribution of tubulin has been investigated in surface preparations of the guinea pig organ of Corti using indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. Two different monoclonal antibodies to tubulin produce similar distinct patterns of labelling in hair cells. Labelling is greater in inner hair cells than outer hair cells. It occurs in rings around the cell apex, and in a meshwork below and channels through, the cuticular plate. In outer hair cells from the apical region of the cochlea, labelling occurs around the location of a basalward protrusion of the cuticular plate. These patterns correlate with the location of microtubules observed using transmission electron microscopy. A large patch of labelling occurs on the strial side of the cell corresponding to the largest channel through the cuticular plate and the kinociliary basal body. Strands of labelling are seen running parallel to the long axis of the cell between the subcuticular and synaptic region. Many more of these strands are seen in the inner hair cell than the outer hair cell and may correspond to tracks of microtubules transporting neurotransmitter vesicles or other organelles. In outer hair cells, intense labelling and many microtubules are seen in the subnuclear region. The possible roles of the different microtubule arrangements are discussed.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of prolonged physical activity in a cold environment upon circulating thyroid hormone levels. A secondary focus of the study involved the role of nocturnal habitat upon the thyroidal responses to the physical activity and cold exposure. Military personnel exposed to 10 d of field-based operations in the arctic region of Norway were studied. Blood samples were collected before (day 1), and at days 5 and 10 of the operations. Levels of total T4, free T4, total T3, free T3, and thyroid binding globulin were assessed in all blood samples. The results indicated considerable, significant (p less than 0.05) decreases in total thyroid hormone levels, while relative increases of free fractions of the hormones occur with the 10-d operations in the Arctic. However, no significant influence on thyroidal responses were observed due to the nocturnal habitat that the subjects lived in. The hormonal alterations noted are possibly brought about by the combined effects of physical activity and cold exposure acting synergistically to alter thyroid physiology (e.g., most likely the protein carrier binding affinity).  相似文献

Computed tomographic (CT) scans and magnetic resonance (MR) images obtained in 24 patients with cervical lymphadenopathy were retrospectively and blindly evaluated by two readers for the presence of central nodal necrosis (CNN) and extracapsular nodal spread (ENS). The CT studies were all enhanced, and the MR images were obtained with short repetition time (TR)/echo time (TE), long TR/double echo, and enhanced short TR/TE fat-suppressed sequences. Each MR imaging sequence was interpreted separately and then collectively. Sixty lymph nodes were identified with CT. Sensitivity for CNN was 16%-67% with the unenhanced MR pulse sequences, 50% with enhanced sequences, and 83%-100% with CT. The most accurate reading of MR images for CNN was with the unenhanced T1-weighted and T2-weighted images (86%-87%); the accuracy of CT was 91%-96%. The accuracy of MR imaging for detecting ENS was maximal with T1-weighted images (78%-90%). Gadolinium-enhanced, fat-suppressed images did not improve accuracy in evaluating CNN or ENS. CT is currently more accurate than unenhanced or enhanced MR imaging in detecting CNN or ENS.  相似文献

The effects of resistance exercise on the nocturnal responses of cortisol (CO), testosterone (TEST), human growth hormone (hGH), and thyroid hormones (T3, T4) were examined in eight trained weight lifters. Each subject completed two trials using a counterbalanced design: a control, no exercise trial (CON) and a heavy resistance exercise session of three sets of six exercises to exhaustion (RE). The exercise session took place between 1900 and 2000 hours. Blood was sampled prior to and at 20-min intervals after RE. For both trials blood was sampled at hourly intervals from 2100 hours until 0700 hours. The hGH and CO concentrations were increased up to 40-min post-exercise (P < 0.05), but returned to resting levels 1 h post-exercise. Nocturnal hGH concentration was not affected by RE (P > 0.26) and peaked at 0200 hours and declined until 0700 hours. Similarly, the CO responses were similar between the trails (P > 0.14). This CO concentrations declined from 2200 hours until 0100 hours, then increased steadily until 0700 hours. The TEST concentrations during both trials rose steadily from 2200 hours until 0700 hours; however, the rise in TEST from 0500–0700 hours during RE was greater than during the CON trails (P = 0.059). The T3 concentrations were unchanged by exercise and were similar at all times between trails. The T4 concentrations were elevated for 20 min after RE; however nocturnal T4 concentrations were lower after RE than during CON. These results would suggest that bGH and CO may have limited nocturnal reactivity to resistance exercise. However, the nocturnal alterations of TEST and T4 after resistance exercise, although small, may have implications for muscle anabolism.  相似文献

Summary The distribution and colocalization of -aminobutyric acid (GABA)- and glycine-like immunoreactivity in the cochlear nuclear complex of the guinea pig have been studied to produce a light microscopic atlas. The method used was based on post-embedding immunocytochemistry in pairs of 0.5-m-thick plastic sections treated with polyclonal antibodies against conjugated GABA and glycine respectively. Immunoreactive cells, presumably short axon neurones, predominated in the dorsal cochlear nucleus, with mostly single-GABA-labelled cells in the superficial layer, double-labelled in the middle, and single-glycine-labelled in the deep layers. A few large single-glycine-labelled cells, interpreted as commissural neurons, occurred in the ventral nucleus. Scattered double-labelled cells, probably Golgi cells, were seen in the granule cell domain. Immunolabelled puncta of all three staining categories occurred in large numbers throughout the complex, apposed to somata and in the neuropil, showing a differential distribution onto different types of neuron. Three immunolabelled tracts were noted: the tuberculoventral tract, the commissural acoustic stria, and the trapezoidal descending fibres. Most of the fibres in these tracts were single-labelled for glycine, although in the last mentioned tract single-GABA- and double-labelled fibres were also found. Young [1649 population doubling level (PDL)] and senescing (50–53 PDL) WI-38 cell populations were exposed to 1 ppm ozone for 2 hr and the resultant extracellular and intracellular acid phosphatase concentration was measured. Dose response curves were also determined for surviving populations of young and old cells after a 1 hr ozone exposure ranging in concentration from 0 to 1.00 ppm. Senescing cells released 8 times more acid phosphatase per million cells than the young cells. Both old and young cells showed a clear dose-response to the 1 hr ozone gradient exposure. However, the older cells demonstrated a consistent 17% average lower survival rate than the young cells. The higher acid hydrolase level in older WI–38 cells is probably related to the lower survival rate observed in the older cells in vitro.  相似文献
