Roentgenologic appearance of fibromuscular dysplasia

Clinical and roentgenologic findings in 100 hypertensive patients with fibromuscular disease of the renal arteries are presented and compared with the experiences obtained from previously reported large series. Frequency of bilateral disease and abnormal findings at urography, involvement of segmental arteries and occurrence of extrarenal manifestations are reported. A striking female preponderance is noted, and there is evidence that the disease inflicts middle-aged rather than young women.     

Venous prosthetic valves. The first step toward an investigation in the canine model

Bioprosthetic valves were surgically placed in the inferior vena cava of four canines as a first step in the investigation of prosthetic valves for the treatment of nonobstructive chronic venous stasis. Valve patency and thrombus formation involving either the valve or the IVC was evaluated by serial follow-up inferior vena cavagrams in each canine. No thrombus occurred in any of the canines as observed at six months in two canines and eight months in two canines. The ultimate goal of this and other ongoing investigations is to develop a valvular prosthesis which may be placed into the venous system for the management of nonobstructive chronic venous stasis.     

Hemorrhage following pelvic fracture controlled by embolization: case report.

This case report demonstrates the value of arterial management with embolization of hemorrhage following pelvic fracture. Surgical ligation and arterial embolization are briefly discussed as treatment modalities.     

Health impact of domestic violence

Health injuries and related problems are well documented for the victims of domestic violence (DV). The health impact of DV behaviors for batterers has gone virtually unstudied. This study addresses the self-reports of health consequences of DV for both batterers and victims. The participants, 31 female victims and 62 male batterers, had numerous medical and mental health visits during the previous six months. Fourteen batterers (23%) received health care as a result of self-inflicted injuries from their battering. Eleven victims (35%) had received health care as a result of being battered. Eighteen batterers (29%) and 20 victims (64%) felt their medical and mental health problems were directly related to the DV. Additionally, batterers identified greater levels of stress on several of the subscales of the Symptoms of Stress Inventory (Nakagawa et al., 1993) than a comparison sample of adult men. Health care access as a result of DV was abundant for both victims and batterers. When assessing for DV, health care providers should screen for perpetrators as well as victims.     

Primary common bile duct carcinoid

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography was performed in a 32-year-old man with recurrent episodes of painless jaundice. There was demonstration of a large intraluminal mass causing partial obstruction of the common bile duct. The lesion proved to be a primary carcinoid tumor of the bile duct.
