In this study, we investigated the prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and TP53 expression in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue and, subsequently, its significance in cervical lymph node metastases and tumor differentiation. Sections of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks from 94 histologically confirmed tongue SCC cases were investigated in this study. Immunohistochemistry was used to study TP53 expression, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed for the detection of high risk HPV types (16 and 18). The frequency of HPV-16 and HPV-18 infection was 10.6% and 16%, respectively. Overexpression of TP53 was observed in 70.2% of patients. Young patients (aged below 45 years) comprised 20% of all patients. There was no significant association between TP53, HPV-16, or HPV 18 presence and higher stages of the tumor, tumor differentiation, or presence of nodal metastasis. Although an association between head and neck SCC and HPV infection is being recognized and reported, our data implicate that HPV infection or TP53 expression does not play a significant role in oral tongue SCC pathogenesis, differentiation, or metastasis, as seen in our patients.  相似文献

We conducted this study to investigate whether CAG repeat length in androgen receptor gene and GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms influence prostate cancer risk in Iranian newly diagnosed cancer patients compared to age-matched BPH group and healthy individuals. DNA from 110 pathologically-confirmed prostate cancer patients, 99 age-matched men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and 100 healthy individuals were extracted and amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR products were examined by electrophoresis and sequencing. The mean number of CAG repeat in prostate cancer patients was significantly smaller than normal (19.9 vs 22.8; p < 0.0001) and BPH groups (19.9 vs 21.9; P < 0.0001) The mean difference between normal individuals and BPH group was also significant (21.9 vs. 22.8; P = 0.003). Presence of GSTM1 null genotype were significantly higher in cancer and BPH group vs. normal individuals (both P values < 0.0001). there was not seen association between GSTT1 null or positive genotype with cancer risk, but analysis of GSTM1 null and GSTT1 positive in combination was statistically associated with Prostate cancer risk (OR = 8.4, 95% CI 1.53–46.73). Our results showed that CAG repeat polymorphism in AR gene may act as a risk modifier and GSTM1 null genotypes also may be contributed to prostate cancer susceptibility in Iranian patients.  相似文献

It is important to increase the awareness and knowledge of head and neck surgeons about the recent surge of craniofacial mucormycosis in COVID‐19 patients because early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to improve the outcomes. Here, we describe clinical features, treatment protocols, and outcomes of treatment in eight patients with COVID‐19‐associated mucormycosis in the maxilla. Consistent with the findings of previous studies, our experience in the management of these eight patients shows that early administration of amphotericin B and prompt aggressive surgery are essential for optimal control of the disease.  相似文献

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a clinical disorder that may develop following surgical trauma to the maxilla, for example as a result of closed sinus lifting with the use of mallet and osteotome during implant surgery. We proposed that BPPV may also occur following maxillary Le Fort osteotomy during orthognathic surgery. In a prospective study of 50 consecutive cases of orthognathic surgery, we observed that one patient developed BPPV in the postoperative period following bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. The patient was a 23-year-old woman who met the strict criteria for a diagnosis of BPPV, including a positive Dix–Hallpike test. We have described BPPV in more detail and have discussed the necessity of increasing awareness and knowledge of surgeons about BPPV as a possible complication of craniomaxillofacial surgery.  相似文献

Background

Sulfur mustard (SM) gas as a vesicant chemical warfare was used in the Iran-Iraq war (1981–1989) against the Iranian warriors.

Objective

This alkylating agent with the potential of producing chemical injury in the skin, eyes and lung, may damage both upper and lower respiratory tract, which in turn can cause different types of sequels such as asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic bronchitis and lung fibrosis.

Methods

This study was performed on 274 patients with documented history of SM gas exposure. All of the participants complained of respiratory problems. Patients with positive history of cigarette smoking, respiratory problems before the exposure to SM gas, cardiovascular problems, surgery of the lung, and exposure to occupational toxic chemicals were excluded from the study. Results of all chest HRCTs were evaluated by a radiologist.

Results

HRCT findings showed that bronchiectasis involved 53 patients (19.34%) of all cases. Varicose bronchiectasis and cystic bronchiectasis was observed in 10 (18.9%) and 6 cases (11.3%) respectively. Among patients with bronchiectasis, the involvement rate of different lobes was as follows: Right upper lobe (RUL) 7.5%, right middle lobe (RML) 11.3%, left upper lobe (LUL) 15.1%, left lower lobe (LLL) 26.4% and right lower lobe (RLL) 39.6%.

Discussion and conclusion

Findings of chest HRCT demonstrated tubular bronchiectasis was the most frequent type of this disease that involve the chemically injured patients and RLL had been the most frequently involved lobe of the lung with bronchiectasis.  相似文献
