The BEAM code is used to simulate nine photon beams from three major manufacturers of medical linear accelerators (Varian, Elekta, and Siemens), to derive and evaluate estimates for the parameters of the electron beam incident on the target, and to study the effects of some mechanical parameters like target width, primary collimator opening, flattening filter material and density. The mean energy and the FWHM of the incident electron beam intensity distributions (assumed Gaussian and cylindrically symmetric) are derived by matching calculated percentage depth-dose curves past the depth of maximum dose (within 1% of maximum dose) and off-axis factors (within 2sigma at 1% statistics or less) with measured data from the AAPM RTC TG-46 compilation. The off-axis factors are found to be very sensitive to the mean energy of the electron beam, the FWHM of its intensity distribution, its angle of incidence, the dimensions of the upper opening of the primary collimator, the material of the flattening filter and its density. The off-axis factors are relatively insensitive to the FWHM of the electron beam energy distribution, its divergence and the lateral dimensions of the target. The depth-dose curves are sensitive to the electron beam energy, and to its energy distribution, but they show no sensitivity to the FWHM of the electron beam intensity distribution. The electron beam incident energy can be estimated within 0.2 MeV when matching either the measured off-axis factors or the central-axis depth-dose curves when the calculated uncertainties are about 0.7% at the 1 sigma level. The derived FWHM (+/-0.1 mm) of the electron beam intensity distributions all fall within 1 mm of the manufacturer specifications except in one case where the difference is 1.2 mm.  相似文献

New tumor-specific contrast agents for clinical imaging and therapy for cancer are required. To this end Gd-H (Gd-hematoporphyrin), Gd-TCP (Gd-tetra-carboranylmethoxyphenyl-porphyrin), Gd-DTPA-WM53, and Gd-DTPA-9.2.27 were synthesized and administered by systemic injection to nude mice with human melanoma (MM-138) xenografts. The biodistribution T1 relaxation times and magnetic resonance (MR) image signal enhancement of the contrast agents are presented for the first time and compared for each group of five mice. A change (20%) in T1 relaxation times of water in human melanoma tumor xenografts was revealed 24 hours after injection of the labeled immunoconjugate Gd-DTPA-9.2.27. The percent of injected antibody or gadolinium that localized to the tumor was measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) to be approximately 35%. A higher concentration of gadolinium was achieved compared with nonspecific compounds, indicating selective delivery of Gd-DTPA-9.2.27 to the melanoma xenografts. Porphyrin-based contrast agents (Gd-H and Gd-TCP) also showed significant uptake in melanomas. The uptake of Gd-TCP by the tumor was sufficient to deliver boron atoms into the tumor, making possible dual use for both MR imaging (MRI) and boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The linear relationship found between the paramagnetic contribution to the relaxation rates and contrast agent concentration allows quantitative studies of paramagnetic contrast agent uptake.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: In the preterm human fetus, immaturity of gastrointestinal (GI) motility contributes to impairment of oral feeding and an increased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis. In view of the limited knowledge of fetal GI motility development, and the primary role of the muscarinic system in adult GI motility, we examined the development of GI muscarinic receptor subtypes associated with ileal motility. STUDY DESIGN: Ovine term fetal, newborn, and pregnant adult ileal longitudinal muscle contractile responses to muscarinic agonists (bethanechol) and muscarinic nonspecific (atropine) and subtype specific-antagonists (M1-M4) were examined in organ baths. Immunohistochemical analysis of ileal muscle muscarinic receptor subtypes was correlated with contractile responses. RESULTS: Bethanechol induced a concentration-dependent ileal contraction at all 3 age groups. Adult ileal maximal tension was 2-fold higher than that of the fetus and newborn, while 50% effective concentration (EC(50)) was similar at all ages. Atropine (10(-6)mol/L) inhibited contractility in fetal (67%+/-7%), newborn (82%+/-5%), and adult (97%+/-2%) in an age-dependent manner. The M3 antagonist exhibited robust inhibition at all age groups while the M2 antagonist demonstrated enhanced inhibition in the fetus. Immunohistochemical analysis indicated coexpression of subtype receptors in fetal, newborn, and adult ileal smooth muscle with increasing expression with advancing age. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate a specific developmental pattern of muscarinic receptor subtype expression. Knowledge and/or alterations of GI motility regulation may aid in the treatment of the preterm fetus or newborn.  相似文献

The natural background radiation has been measured in one of the highest altitude regions (Zagros Mountains), Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, in the south west of Iran. The outdoors-environmental monitoring exposure rate of radiation was measured in 200 randomly chosen regions using portable Geiger-Muller and scintillation detectors. Eight measurements were made in each region and an average value was used to calculate the exposure rate from natural background radiation. The average exposure rate was found to be 0.246 microGy/h and the annual average effective dose equivalent was found to be 0.49 mSv. An overall population-weighted mean outdoor dose rate was calculated to be 49 nGy/h, which is higher than the world-wide mean value of 44 nGy/h, as reported by UNSCEAR in 1998, and is comparable to the annual effective dose equivalent of 0.38 mSv. A good correlation between the altitude and the exposure rate was observed, as the higher altitude regions have higher natural background radiation levels.  相似文献

In this study, the local and global left ventricular function are estimated by fitting three-dimensional active mesh model (3D-AMM) to the initial sparse displacement which is measured from an establishing point correspondence procedure. To evaluate the performance of the algorithm, eight image sequences were used and the results were compared with those reported by other researchers. The findings were consistent with previously published values and the clinical evidence as well. The results demonstrated the superiority of the novel strategy with respect to formerly presented algorithm reported by author et al. Furthermore, the results are comparable to the current state-of-the-art methods.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fatty liver (FL) and coronary artery disease (CAD) have several risk factors in common, which are usually considered to account for their frequent coexistence. The independent association between FL and angiographic CAD was assessed in this case-control study by considering the contribution of their shared risk factors. METHODS: Three hundred and seventeen adult patients who underwent elective coronary angiography (CAG) were recruited immediately after CAG and classified into either of the two groups A (normal or mildly abnormal CAG; n=85) or B (clinically relevant CAD; n=232). A liver sonography was performed on the same day as CAG. RESULTS: The groups were significantly different in terms of gender, fasting blood glucose, low-density lipoproteins, diabetes (DM), hypertension and FL. In binary logistic regression, FL was the strongest independent predictor of CAD [P<0.001, odds ratio (OR)=8.48%, 95% confidence interval (CI)=4.39-16.40], followed by DM (P=0.002, OR=2.94) and male gender (P=0.014, OR=2.31). This pattern of associations did not change after clinically significant variables (waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index, triglycerides and high-density lipoproteins) were added to analysis. CONCLUSION: Fatty liver seems to be a strong independent alarm for the presence of significant CAD.  相似文献

A critical element in tissue engineering involves the fabrication of a three-dimensional scaffold. The scaffold provides a space for new tissue formation, supports cellular ingrowth, and proliferation and mimics many roles of the extracellular matrix. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is the most thoroughly investigated member of the polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) family that has various degrees of biocompatibility and biodegradability for tissue engineering applications. In this study, we fabricated PHB scaffolds by utilizing electrospinning and salt-leaching procedures. The behavior of monkey epithelial kidney cells (Vero) and mouse mesenchymal stem cells (mMSCs) on these scaffolds was compared by the MTS assay and scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, this study investigated the mechanical and physical properties of these scaffolds by measuring tensile strength and modulus, dynamic contact angle and porosity. According to our results, the salt-leached scaffolds showed more wettability and permeability, but inferior mechanical properties when compared with nanofibrous scaffolds. In terms of cell response, salt-leached scaffolds showed enhanced Vero cell proliferation, whereas both scaffolds responded similarly in the case of mMSCs proliferation. In brief, nanofibrous scaffolds can be a better substrate for cell attachment and morphology.  相似文献

The present study aimed to evaluate serum prooxidant -antioxidant balance (PAB) in an Iranian population exposed to sulfur mustard (SM) more than 20 years ago. In this study, 42 SM-exposed subjects and 30 unexposed subjects (as controls) were recruited. Serum PAB, biochemical, and hematological parameters were measured in all subjects. Correlation of PAB with biochemical and hematological parameters was determined. The mean PAB values in the SM-exposed group (82.5?±?34.8 HK) were significantly higher than that in the control group [47.5?±?17.8 HK] (p?<?0.001). The results demonstrated that serum PAB values were positively correlated with alkaline phosphatase activities in the SM-exposed group. Furthermore, PAB values showed a significant negative correlation with hepatic enzymes (AST, ALT), triglycerides, total bilirubin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations. PAB values showed a borderline significant negative correlation with uric acid. The present results suggest that late oxidative stress and alterations in biochemical and hematological parameters may be a consequence of the frequent respiratory infections rather than direct toxic effects of SM.  相似文献

The radiofrequency radiation is of concern in hospital laboratories as the microwaves have many health effects even on immune functions. The aim of this study was, however, to evaluate the effects of cell phone radiation on chorionic gonadotropin immunoassays of human serum. Two cell phones with 0.69 and 1.09W/kg (head SAR) emitting 900MHz radiation were used. Sixty wells with five human serum concentrations (0, 10, 100, 250, 500mIU/mL) were used in three batches. The well heads in each batch were exposed to 900MHz emitted from these phones, and the 0.69, 1.09W/kg exposed batches were compared with the unexposed controls. Radiation exposure from mobile phones altered the measured serum levels especially in the wells with 100, 250, 500mIU/mL hormone concentrations. Exposure at 1.09W/kg SAR caused a significant loss compared to 0.69W/kg SAR exposure. In conclusion, the microwave exposures may require attention in laboratories using immunoassays.  相似文献
