Plants with antidiabetic activities provide important source for the development of new drugs in the management of diabetes mellitus. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of aqueous extract (AE) of Pimpinella tirupatiensis (Pt) tuberous root on cardiac oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in non-diabetic and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by a single administration of STZ (40 mg/kg intraperitoneal (i.p). AE (750 mg/kg/b.w./day) and glibenclamide (GLB) (20 mg/kg/b.w./day) were administrated orally by intra oral gastric tube for 30 days. After 4 weeks of hyperglycaemia the enzymatic and non-enzymatic factors were measured in cardiac tissue of diabetic and control groups. Xanthine oxidase activity (XOD), Uric acid (UA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were significantly (p < 0.01) elevated by 48, 48 and 50% respectively and the contents of glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid (AA) were significantly (p < 0.01) diminished by 45 and 42% respectively in diabetic rats when compared to normal. Treatment with AE and GLB normalized the content of UA, GSH, AA, MDA and the activity of XOD. No significant changes were observed in control rats treated with AE. This data suggests that hyperglycemia induces oxidative stress in the heart, but the oxidative stress defense mechanisms in the heart tissue are fairly efficacious against oxidative injury by the treatment with AE and GLB. The present study reveals that AE may provide a useful therapeutic option in the reversal of oxidative stress induced cardiac dysfunction in diabetes mellitus. 相似文献

Introduction
There is scarcity of data validating portable digital ankle-brachial index (ABI) with contrast angiography in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Our aim was to provide an objective analysis of the relationship between digital ABI (dABI) and peripheral angiographic data.Methods
Consecutive patients with symptoms of PAD between May 2014 to May 2015 at Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, who were undergoing simultaneous dABI and peripheral angiography, were evaluated. Measurements were made using the FloChec? Digital ABI system (Bard) prior to the scheduled peripheral angiogram.Results
The final cohort consisted of 51 patients. Mean age was 68.8?±?9.5?years with 55% being male. Aorto-iliac disease accounted for 13% of the total lesions, while femoro-popliteal lesions comprised 55%. The FloChec? digital ABI had a sensitivity of 84% and a positive predictive value of 84%. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.74 (p?=?0.007). On multivariate analysis, FloChec? digital ABI was still an independent predictor of PAD, Odds ratio 6.8 (2.3–20.6, p?=?0.001).Conclusion

To characterize clinical correlates of typhoid fever-associated encephalopathy, we performed a retrospective chart review of patients with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi bacteremia who were hospitalized at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, from February of 2009 to June of 2011. Of 207 patients bacteremic with Salmonella Typhi who were ≥ 5 years of age, we identified 43 (21%) patients with encephalopathy. Univariate analysis revealed that patients with encephalopathy more often presented at ages of 10-24 years and had severe dehydration, low oxygen saturation, high respiratory rate, low leukocyte count, low platelet count, and Widal flagellar H agglutinin (TH) titer ≥ 1:640 compared with typhoid patients without encephalopathy. Multivariate analysis using logistic regression showed that age, dehydration, leukocyte count, and Widal TH titer were independently associated with encephalopathy. Our findings suggest that age, severity of disease, and immune responses are associated with encephalopathy during Salmonella Typhi bacteremia, perhaps reflecting the impact of prominent inflammatory responses. 相似文献

Objective Our purpose was to identify angiographic and procedural predictors for acute and late side branch occlusion after coronary stent implantation. Methods We evaluated 185 patients with 185 lesions with 255 side branches with a mean reference diameter of 1.45 ± 0.38 mm; the lesions were covered by 240 stents. Angiographic follow-up was completed in 99 patients with 133 side branches 206 ± 120 days after stent implantation and clinical follow-up was available in 136 patients. Side branch occlusion (SBO) was defined as a Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) flow ≤1. Results Acute SBO affected 54 side branches in 49 patients and was not associated with death or Q-wave infarction. By logistic regression, independent predictors for acute SBO were (1) the reference side branch diameter (RLD) at baseline (OR [odds ratio] 0.217, 95% CI 0.07-0.67, P = .008); (2) an ostial side branch stenosis before stenting (OR 2.96, 95% CI 1.26-6.95, P = .013); (3) the involvement of the side branch origin within the lesion of the parent vessel (OR 2.77, 95% CI 1.17-6.57, P = .021); and (4) the balloon-to-artery ratio (OR 4.66, 95% CI 1.18-18.42, P = .028). Among the initially occluded side branches, 81.8% were spontaneously reperfused at follow-up. Late SBO involved 12% of the side branches without impaired antegrade flow after stenting and was predicted by the initial RLD of the side branch (OR 0.07, 95% CI 0.01-0.8, P = .032). Chronic SBO occurred in 13.5% of cases and was also predicted by the baseline RLD (OR 0.13, 95% CI 0.02-0.8, P = .028). Conclusions Acute SBO after stenting occurred in 21.2% of cases and had a benign course. Most acutely occluded side branches underwent late spontaneous reperfusion. A baseline side branch diameter >1.4 mm predicted a preserved antegrade flow immediately after stent implantation, as well as during follow-up. (Am Heart J 2002;143:627-35.) 相似文献
