After admission to hospital for bed rest, 200 women with multiple pregnancies were randomly allocated to receive either 4 mg of salbutamol orally five times daily, or to receive no drug. After an average of 6 weeks treatment, no difference between the experimental groups could be detected with respect to duration of gestation, birthweight or any other of the outcomes of pregnancy observed.  相似文献

Myelin basic protein antibodies in catatonic schizophrenia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Myelin basic protein (MBP) antibodies were determined by solid-phase radioimmunoassay in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid of 10 patients with catatonia, 10 patients with other forms of schizophrenia, and 10 psychiatrically healthy controls. The mean counts per minute (cpm) value of serum anti-MBP antibody of the catatonia group was significantly higher than that of the patients with other forms of schizophrenic psychoses (p less than .05). No significant differences were observed among the cpm values of the CSF specimens from the three patient groups. The hypothesis of a central virus-induced immunologic aberration in catatonic schizophrenia is discussed.  相似文献

Vigabatrin (gamma-vinyl GABA; GVG) is a new antiepileptic drug (AED) that increases the level of the inhibitory transmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. We evaluated the effect of GVG on the EEG of normal rats. GVG was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) at a dose of 100 mg/kg once a day for 12 days. EEG was recorded at baseline, on the fourth day, at the end of the 12-day GVG period and 10 days after discontinuation of GVG. GVG increased the amplitude of delta (1-4 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) frequency bands and resulted in slowing of the peak frequency (Fp) and mean frequency (Fm) in both the frontal and occipital cortex, especially during waking-immobility. EEG changes normalized within 10 days after the last GVG injections. The results suggest that a relationship may exist between the EEG changes and increase in GABA levels with GVG.  相似文献

Recent studies reported differential information in human magnetocardiogram and in electrocardiogram. Vortex currents have been discussed as a possible source of this divergence. With the help of physical phantom experiments, we quantified the influence of active vortex currents on the strength of electric and magnetic signals, and we tested the ability of standard source localization algorithms to reconstruct vortex currents. The active vortex currents were modeled by a set of twelve single current dipoles arranged in a circle and mounted inside a phantom that resembles a human torso. Magnetic and electric data were recorded simultaneously while the dipoles were switched on stepwise one after the other. The magnetic signal strength increased continuously for an increasing number of dipoles switched on. The electric signal strength increased up to a semicircle and decreased thereafter. Source reconstruction with unconstrained focal source models performed well for a single dipole only (less than 3-mm localization error). Minimum norm source reconstruction yielded reasonable results only for a few of the dipole configurations. In conclusion active vortex currents might explain, at least in part, the difference between magnetically and electrically acquired data, but improved source models are required for their reconstruction.  相似文献

A solid-phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been developed for the detection of human rotavirus-specific IgA, IgG, and IgM antibodies. Nebraska calf diarrhea virus grown in LLC-MK2 cell cultures in the presence of trypsin was directly adsorbed onto polystyrene balls, and antibodies that attached to the virus-coated balls were detected by subsequent binding of 125I-labeled antibodies specific to human alpha, gamma or mu chains of human Iga, IgG, or IgM immunoglobulins. A total of 116 serum specimens from 58 adult patients were tested. Binding ratios between the positive and the negative serum varied between 5 and 15, occasionally being 20 or more in the IgA and IgG assays, but rarely exceeding 3 in the IgM assay. The RIA was found to be more sensitive in detecting antibodies to rotavirus than the complement fixation (CF) test, the RIA titers obtained being 50--100 times as high as the CF titers. The method described offers a possibility of evaluating the immune response to human rotavirus and of detecting recent infection.  相似文献

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) using polystyrene beads as the solid phase for cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigen and iodinated immunosorbent purified anti-human IgG, IgM, and IgA as indicator antibodies was developed for the detection of immunoglobulin class-specific antibodies to CMV. An antigen prepared from extracellular virus was essential for reliable results, and a preparation ultracentrifuged and sonicated twice was better than a crude antigen. The optimal antigen gave low cpm values with a negative reference serum, resulting in cpm ratios of 10 or higher between early convalescent phase serum and negative reference serum. Of six patients with an increase in CMV CF titres, all six had an increase in RIA IgG titres, four had an increase in IgA titres, and all had IgM antibodies. The IgG titres were high, up to 1/64,000. In a group of 17 infants negative in CMV CF test, 14 had CMV IgG antibodies in RIA test, indicating mainly low levels of maternal antibodies. In six of seven patients with CMV isolations from urine specimens, an increase in IgG or IgA titres or the presence of IgM antibodies was found, and only one of these patients had an increase in CMV CF titre. The specificity of the developed CMV RIA test was further demonstrated by detecting no significant increase in RIA titres in serum specimens of patients with primary herpes simplex infection, chickenpox, herpes zoster, or infectious mononucleosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Ospemifene, a novel selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), shows promise for bone preservation in postmenopausal women. This study examined the effects of ospemifene on different vascular surrogate markers. DESIGN: A double-blinded study was conducted in 160 healthy, postmenopausal women who used, in a randomized order, ospemifene (at daily doses of 30, 60, or 90 mg) or placebo for 3 months. RESULTS: Although ospemifene caused falls from basal levels in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and a rise in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the only statistically significant difference between ospemifene and placebo was an increase of triglyceride levels (11.3%) in the 90-mg group. Ospemifene caused no significant effect on endothelial markers or homocysteine. Of the markers reflecting coagulation and fibrinolysis, plasma fibrinogen was significantly reduced in the 60- and 90-mg groups of ospemifene (8.7% and 8.5%, respectively) when compared with the placebo group. No changes were seen in generation of thrombin or degradation of crosslinked fibrin D-dimer. The uterine or carotid arteries and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure were not affected by ospemifene. Ospemifene caused no changes in basal insulin or in a 2-h glucose tolerance test, suggesting unaltered insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSIONS: Neutral effects of short-term use of ospemifene on vascular surrogate markers imply no effect for ospemifene on the risk for cardiovascular disorders in healthy, postmenopausal women.  相似文献

Human decidua has been shown to produce a number of cytokines. We hypothesized that decidual cytokine production influences cord blood mononuclear cell (CBMC) cytokine production and that cytokine profiles of decidua from allergic women differ from those of decidua from nonallergic women. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, we measured unstimulated and concanavalin A/phorbol myristate acetate-stimulated production of interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-5, IL-10, IL-13 and interferon- gamma (IFN-gamma) by decidual explants from 59 healthy women delivered by unlabored cesarean section and from corresponding CBMCs in 39 of the 59. Except for IL-10, there was little or no unstimulated cytokine production. There was a strong correlation between stimulated decidual and stimulated CBMC IFN-gamma production (p = 0.01). In allergic women the ratio of IL-13 to IL-4 production was increased in stimulated explants (p = 0.03). Stimulated CBMCs from infants of allergic mothers were more likely to produce detectable levels of IL-5 than those from infants of nonallergic mothers (p = 0.04) and had a tendency toward higher IL-13 levels as well (p = 0.07). These results suggest that maternal and fetal IFN-gamma production is closely linked and that maternal allergy appears to influence cytokine production in the neonate for IL-5 and possibly IL-13.  相似文献

Background: Associations between traffic noise and sleep problems have been detected in experimental studies, but population-level evidence is scarce.Objectives: We studied the relationship between the levels of nighttime traffic noise and sleep disturbances and identified vulnerable population groups.Methods: Noise levels of nighttime–outdoor traffic were modeled based on the traffic intensities in the cities of Helsinki and Vantaa, Finland. In these cities, 7,019 public sector employees (81% women) responded to postal surveys on sleep and health. We linked modeled outdoor noise levels to the residences of the employees who responded to the postal survey. We used logistic regression models to estimate associations of noise levels with subjectively assessed duration of sleep and symptoms of insomnia (i.e., difficulties falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, waking up too early in the morning, nonrestorative sleep). We also used stratified models to investigate the possibility of vulnerable subgroups.Results: For the total study population, exposure to levels of nighttime–outside (Lnight, outside) traffic noise > 55 dB was associated with any insomnia symptom ≥ 2 nights per week [odds ratio (OR) = 1.32; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.05, 1.65]. Among participants with higher trait anxiety scores, which we hypothesized were a proxy for noise sensitivity, the ORs for any insomnia symptom at exposures to Lnight, outside traffic noises 50.1–55 dB and > 55 dB versus ≤ 45 dB were 1.34 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.80) and 1.61 (95% CI: 1.07, 2.42), respectively.Conclusions: Nighttime traffic noise levels > 50 dB Lnight, outside was associated with insomnia symptoms among persons with higher scores for trait anxiety. For the total study population, Lnight, outside > 55 dB was positively associated with any symptoms.  相似文献
