Effect of hydrocortisone on immune system of the lizard,Chalcidesocellatus II. Differential action on T and B lymphocytes

Lymphocytes of thymus, spleen, peripheral blood (PB) and bone marrow (BM) collected from adult lizards, $\text{Chalcides}$$\text{ocellatus}$ were cultured for 24 hr in the presence of 10^?3M hydrocortisone acetate (HC) in order to assess the effect of in vitro HC on lizard T and B cell viability. The results indicated that HC induced stepwise, time-dependent mortality of the majority of thymocytes carrying T cell specific antigen(s) (TSA), 30–50% of T cells of spleen, PB and BM, and of a proportion of splenic B lymphocytes. Administration of 1 mg/g body weight HC to adult $\text{Ch}$. $\text{ocellatus}$ lead to depletion of all TSA⁺ thymocytes. In contrast, T lymphocytes in the peripheral lymphoid compartments revealed both sensitivity and resistance to HC; similarly, B lymphocytes constituted susceptible and resistant subpopulations.

Multifocal extramedullary hematopoiesis in a 15-year-old girl with beta thalassemia: A case report

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare disorder in which hematopoietic cells proliferate in tissues other than the bone marrow as a result of a range of hematologic illnesses. Our case is unique in that it covers a number of extramedullary hematopoiesis sites in a 15-year-old girl, some of which are uncommon.     

Carcinome neuroendocrine à petites cellules de la vessie : une entité anatomoclinique rare et agressive

Neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma of the bladder is a rare cancer, rapidly aggressive and metastatic with a very pejorative behavior. The diagnosis is based on histological analysis coupled with immunohistochemical study. Because it is rare, there is no consensus to date. Its management should be multidisciplinary, involving surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. We report two new cases of neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma of the bladder, one is pure and the other associated with urothelial carcinoma. The poor outcome illustrates the quick evolution of this tumor. A review of the literature on this topic is also presented.     

Tailoring the reducibility and catalytic activity of CuO nanoparticles for low temperature CO oxidation

Copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles have received considerable interest as active and inexpensive catalysts for various gas–solid reactions. The CuO reducibility and surface reactivity are of crucial importance for the high catalytic activity. Herein, we demonstrate that the reducibility and stability of CuO nanoparticles can be controlled and tailored for the high catalytic activity of CO oxidation. The synthesized CuO nanoparticles possessed enhanced reducibility in CO atmosphere at lower reduction temperature of 126 °C compared to 284 °C for that of reference CuO particles. Moreover, the CuO catalysts with tailored reducibility demonstrated a reaction rate of 35 μmol s⁻¹ g⁻¹ and an apparent activation energy of 75 kJ mol⁻¹. Furthermore, the tailored catalysts exhibited excellent long-term stability for CO oxidation for up to 48 h on stream. These readily-reducible CuO nanoparticles could serve as efficient, inexpensive and durable catalysts for CO oxidation at low temperatures.
