Intravenous cidofovir treatment for recalcitrant warts in the setting of a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome

Cidofovir is an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate with broad-spectrum activity against DNA viruses, including human papilloma virus (HPV). However, data on the efficacy of cidofovir in an immunosuppressive setting remain contradictory. We report for the first time on the promotion of the healing of recalcitrant warts in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome with intravenous cidofovir treatment.     

Rapid prototype patient-specific drill template for cervical pedicle screw placement.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility and accuracy of a drill template for the placement of a cervical pedicle screw in a single vertebral level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A volumetric CT scan was performed on a cadaver cervical spine. Using computer software, a drill template with a predefined trajectory was constructed that was designed to match the posterior surface of the right side of the fifth cervical vertebra. A physical template was created from the computer model using a rapid prototyping machine. The drill template was used to guide drilling of a pilot hole, and a CT scan was performed to assess the accuracy of this hole. A 3.5-mm diameter pedicle screw was placed in the pilot hole. The spine was then dissected to separate the vertebrae and the trajectory of the screw was visually inspected. RESULTS: The feasibility of this patient-specific rapid prototyping technique was demonstrated. Imaging and visual inspection confirmed accurate placement of the pilot hole and cervical pedicle screw without cortical violation. CONCLUSIONS: The potential use of drill templates to place cervical pedicle screws is promising. Our initial methodology appears to provide an accurate technique and trajectory for pedicle screw placement in the cervical spine.     

Kinship versus friendship: social adaptation in married and widowed elderly women

The qualities of daughter versus same-sex friend relationships were described by 151 married and widowed elderly women. The relation of these qualities to life satisfaction was assessed. Relationship qualities predicted life satisfaction in widowed women but not in married women. Significant predictors of life satisfaction for widows included the emotional support of daughters, the instrumental support of friends and friendship strength. In a comparison of the relationship qualities, both married and widowed respondents described daughters as providing more stimulation, ego support and utility than friends. Respondents also reported that relationships with daughters were stronger than those with friends. Married women described relationships with both daughters and friends as more stimulating than widowed women. The value of assessing qualitative indices compared to quantitative indices of later life relationships is discussed.     

Gingival crevicular fluid IL-8: correlation with local IL-1β levels and patient estrogen status

Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) IL-8 and IL-1,1β levels were determined by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Associations between IL-8 and IL-1β GCF levels, and between these cytokines and patient estrogen status were evaluated. IL-8 and IL-1β were detected more frequently and in higher amounts/30 s GCF sample in estrogen-deficient patients than in estrogensufficient patients. IL-8 and IL-1β GCF levels were significantly correlated. These lindings suggest that GCF IL-8 levels are associated with patient estrogen status and local IL-1β concentrations.

The consensus group on air rescue has been conducting the project “Further Development of Air Rescue Services in Germany” since 1999 on behalf of the Committee for Emergency Services. In this context, for the first time in the history of air rescue in Germany detailed data were gathered for 2002 on structures and services. The results of this review together with the pertinent evaluations form the basis of requests for further development of air rescue services in Germany. This article summarizes the essential results and appraisals contained in the final report on phase II prepared by the consensus group on air rescue. Part 1 pertaining to project results provides an overview of project goals, project contents, participants, and procedures and presents excerpts from the results on aspects of structures and costs.

Intramedullary pilocytic astrocytomas — a clinical and morphological study after combined surgical and photon or neutron therapy

Ten patients suffering from intramedullary pilocytic astrocytomas (WHO-classification: astrocytoma grade I) were investigated catamnesticly. Combined surgery and radiotherapy was performed. Seven patients received neutron irradiation postoperatively. In four cases the neurological symptoms were improved after follow-up periods ranging from 33 to 89 months. The three other patients died after 6 to 21 months. The autopsy findings of a 14 year old child are presented. Our results are compared with reports in the literature. In addition, long-term problems of the spinal column are discussed. It seems that the combined surgical and neutron therapy improves the prognosis of pencil gliomas.
