To determine the effect of a carbonated carbohydrate (CHO) drink on gastric function and exercise performance, eight male cyclists completed four 120-min bouts of cycling. Each bout consisted of a 105-min ride at 70% VO2max followed by a 15-min self-paced performance ride. During each trial, one of four test solutions was ingested: carbonated CHO (C-10%), noncarbonated CHO (NC-10%), carbonated non-CHO (C), and noncarbonated non-CHO (NC). Following the performance ride, the subjects had their stomach contents removed by aspiration. There were no significant differences in gastric emptying (GE) except for Trial C-10%, which averaged 13.3% less than NC. However, there was no difference in the perception of gastrointestinal comfort between this trial and any other. Average power output during the performance ride was not significantly different between carbonated and noncarbonated trials, or between CHO-fed and no-CHO trials; however, the subjects worked at a greater intensity when fed CHO. Finally, acid base status did not change when a carbonated drink was ingested. This indicates that adding carbonation to a sport drink does not significantly alter gastric function, the perception of GI comfort, or exercise performance.  相似文献

Dopaminergic transmission and the sleep-wakefulness continuum in man   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Modulation of dopaminergic transmission on daytime alertness and performance and on nocturnal sleep were studied in man using 30, 60 and 90 mg pemoline, a dopamimetic drug, and 2, 4 and 6 mg pimozide, a dopamine receptor antagonist. Pemoline lengthened daytime sleep latencies and improved attention, and increased wakefulness during nocturnal sleep. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep was reduced with 90 mg pemoline, but this was due entirely to increased wakefulness. Pimozide had little effect on overnight sleep, but increased the tendency to fall asleep and impaired performance during the day. These studies suggest that the effects of certain drugs which modulate the activity of neurotransmitters, involved in the control of sleep and wakefulness, may be related to the inherent level of activity of the central nervous system. Modulation of the dopaminergic system can have a profound influence on the manifestation of wakefulness and vigilance, but is unlikely to modify directly the elaboration of REM sleep in man.  相似文献

Intracellular recordings from neurons were carried out in cortical slices obtained from tissue removed from patients suffering from intractable seizures. The patients were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of an anatomical abnormality that could be imaged preoperatively. The lesion or its surround was the presumptive epileptogenic area. The tissue removed from the patients without lesions was removed either for biopsy purposes or for access to epileptic tissue and was not considered epileptogenic. All neurons from patients without an imageable lesion, and some (19%) from patients with an imageable lesion, responded to orthodromic stimuli with a sequence of synaptic excitation followed by inhibition; these properties resembled those of normal rodent cortical slices. Different responses, classified as abnormal, were observed in 81% of the neurons in tissue specimens obtained near lesions. The most common was prolonged synaptic excitation with no noticeable inhibition, even at high stimulus strengths. In three resections, long latency all-or-none depolarization shifts were observed that resemble the classic paradoxical depolarization shift seen in in vivo extracellular recordings. Loss of specific inhibitory systems within the cortex may contribute in part to these abnormal responses.  相似文献

This paper presents some of the findings from the Smoking in Pregnancy study of attitudes towards smoking among pregnant women, mothers of young children and their partners in East Surrey. As part of the study, respondents completed a General Health Questionnaire to identify mental health difficulties and, if they were smoking at the time of the study, they also completed the Fagerstrom nicotine addiction test. Eleven female respondents had high scores on the General Health Questionnaire, suggesting symptoms of depression, anxiety and/or social dysfunction for these women. There was no evidence that smokers were suffering from greater mental health difficulties than ex-smokers or non-smokers. However, the General Health Questionnaire scores of smokers were positively associated with their level of nicotine dependence. Furthermore, when General Health Questionnaire scores of all respondents were compared with self-reported health status there was a marked discrepancy suggesting under-reporting of symptoms by women.  相似文献

Background: Nitrous oxide is widely used in anesthesia, often administered at an inspired concentration around 70%. Although nitrous oxide interferes with vitamin B12, folate metabolism, and deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and prevents the use of high inspired oxygen concentrations, the consequences of these effects are unclear.

Methods: Patients having major surgery expected to last at least 2 h were randomly assigned to nitrous oxide-free (80% oxygen, 20% nitrogen) or nitrous oxide-based (70% N2O, 30% oxygen) anesthesia. Patients and observers were blind to group identity. The primary endpoint was duration of hospital stay. Secondary endpoints included duration of intensive care stay and postoperative complications; the latter included severe nausea and vomiting, and the following major complications: pneumonia, pneumothorax, pulmonary embolism, wound infection, myocardial infarction, venous thromboembolism, stroke, awareness, and death within 30 days of surgery.

Results: Of 3,187 eligible patients, 2,050 consenting patients were recruited. Patients in the nitrous oxide-free group had significantly lower rates of major complications (odds ratio, 0.71; 95% confidence interval, 0.56-0.89; P = 0.003) and severe nausea and vomiting (odds ratio, 0.40; 95% confidence interval, 0.31-0.51; P < 0.001), but median duration of hospital stay did not differ substantially between groups (7.0 vs. 7.1 days; P = 0.06). Among patients admitted to the intensive care unit postoperatively, those in the nitrous oxide-free group were more likely to be discharged from the unit on any given day than those in the nitrous oxide group (hazard ratio, 1.35; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-1.73; P = 0.02).  相似文献

Multiple hormones controlling energy homeostasis regulate the expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. Nevertheless, inactivation of the genes encoding NPY and/or AgRP has no impact on food intake in mice. Here we demonstrate that induced selective ablation of AgRP-expressing neurons in adult mice results in acute reduction of feeding, demonstrating direct evidence for a critical role of these neurons in the regulation of energy homeostasis.  相似文献

PCR for the detection of botulinum neurotoxin gene types A to E was used in the investigation of a case of equine botulism. Samples from a foal diagnosed with toxicoinfectious botulism in 1985 were reanalyzed by PCR and the mouse bioassay in conjunction with an environmental survey. Neurotoxin B was detected by mouse bioassay in culture enrichments of serum, spleen, feces, and intestinal contents. PCR results compared well with mouse bioassay results, detecting type B neurotoxin genes in these samples and also in a liver sample. Other neurotoxin types were not detected by either test. Clostridium botulinum type B was shown to be prevalent in soils collected from the area in which the foal was raised. Four methods were used to test for the presence of botulinum neurotoxin-producing organisms in 66 soil samples taken within a 5-km radius: PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis (types A to E), PCR and an enzyme-linked assay (type B), hybridization of crude alkaline cell lysates with a type B-specific probe, and the mouse bioassay (all types). Fewer soil samples were positive for C. botulinum type B by the mouse bioassay (15%) than by any of the DNA-based detection systems. Hybridization of a type B-specific probe to DNA dot blots (26% of the samples were positive) and PCR-enzyme-linked assay (77% of the samples were positive) were used for the rapid analysis of large numbers of samples, with sensitivity limits of 3 x 10(6) and 3,000 cells, respectively. Conventional detection of PCR products by gel electrophoresis was the most sensitive method (300-cell limit), and in the present environmental survey, neurotoxin B genes only were detected in 94% of the samples.  相似文献
