Receptor-dependent regulation of the concentration of Ca2+ in the cytoplasm of thrombocytes in hypertensive patients

Platelet activation factor (PAF)-, ADP and vasopressin-induced increments of platelet Ca2+ concentration were measured by quin-2 in 64 patients with essential hypertension and 16 normal donors. Basal concentration of free Ca2+ was 87 +/- 4 nM in donors, 106 +/- 5 nM in patients with labile hypertension (LH) and 122 +/- 6 nM in those with stable hypertension (SH) (p less than 0.01). PAF, ADP and vasopressin, added to platelets, increased [Ca]in by 448 +/- 58, 397 +/- 66, and 277 +/- 50 nM, respectively, in the donors, by 473 +/- 57, 479 +/- 54 and 195 +/- 32 nM, in LH patients, and by 607 +/- 85, 584 +/- 73 and 245 +/- 41 nM in SH patients. There were no significant variations between the three samples, using the ANOVA test. In 20 patients, whose both parents had essential hypertension, [Ca]in increment was 738 +/- 8 nM for PAF, 682 +/- 90 nM for ADP, and 320 +/- 61 nM for vasopressin. In 19 patients, who admitted to no essential hypertension in the family, these parameters were significantly lower: 310 +/- 40 nM for PAF, 389 +/- 61 nM for ADP, and 147 +/- 26 nM for vasopressin. The demonstrated changes may be making an important contribution to the maintenance of elevated vascular tone and provide an evidence in favor of a genetically-predetermined EH variety.     

Cutaneo-fascial flaps in restorative and reconstructive surgery of burns

On the basis of experience with the treatment of more than 1,500 patients with post-burn defects, deformities, and trophic ulcers, the authors distinguished types of affection in which the traditional methods are ineffective. These 133 patients were subjected to plasty with ++cutaneo-fascial grafts; the zones of donor areas from which the grafts are taken are determined. Plasty with ++cutaneo-fascial grafts is indicated in defects of the face, deformity of the neck, total adduction contracture of the arm, defect of the breast, and affections of the hand, leg, and foot. Concrete grafts and the site from which they are taken for restoration of certain regions of the body are suggested. ++Cutaneo-fascial grafts make it possible to restore the shape, function, and the skin of the involved region.     

Blood level of phosphatidylinositols as a criterion of diagnosis and control of the effectiveness of surgical treatment in gastric cancer

In patients with gastric cancer, the content of phosphatidylinositols in the blood was significantly decreased, in average 2-fold, as compared with their level in donors. After surgical treatment in 36 patients, these indices increased and achieved a maximum value in a year. In these patients, the general state improved, there were no disease recurrences. In 44 patients after the operation, the content of phosphatidylinositols remained low, or increased insignificantly as compared with their level before the operation. In this group, 16 patients died, 10 developed a disease recurrency.     

The effect of thymosin fraction 5 and its synthetic component thymosin-alpha 1 on rat open-field behavior

The effect of thymosin fraction 5 and its synthetic component thymosin-alpha 1 administered i. p. and i. c. v. on the behavior of 219 Wistar rats in the open field was studied to establish the effective dose and time of action of both substances. It was shown that at i. c. v. administration of both compounds in a dose of 10 ng the motor activity was suppressed for about 0.5 hour. At i. p. administration thymosin fraction 5 in doses of 0.15, 0.3 and 0.6 mg/kg suppressed the motor activity for more than 2 hours. The higher the dose, the greater the degree of suppression of the motor activity. Both peptides influence in a similar way the motor activity of the animals irrespective of the route of administration.     

Suppression of rotavirus SA-11 reproduction by protease inhibitors in cell culture

The effect of proteases inhibitors, epsilon-amino-caproic acid and gordox, on reproduction of rotavirus SA-11 in MA-104 cells was studied by enzyme immunoassay. These inhibitors were shown to exert an inhibiting effect on rotavirus reproduction.
