Circadian rhythms of pineal melatonin release were measured in free-moving pigeons, Japanese quails, and chickens under light-dark cycles followed by constant dim light. Although melatonin levels differed among individual birds, circadian rhythms of melatonin were observed in all of them. Using this technique, we could examine phase shifts of melatonin rhythms and suppression of melatonin release by photic stimulation in pigeons. We could also examine effects of norepinephrine infusion on melatonin release. These results indicate that microdialysis is useful for the study of pineal melatonin rhythms in birds. 相似文献

Acute kindling: interstimulation interval effects and spontaneous interictal or ictal epileptiform discharges 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
With regard to "acute kindling" that signifies progressive changes in various epileptiform discharges produced with repeated electrical stimulations in a brief time span in acute experiments, the interstimulation interval effect was examined. Kindling developments produced respectively with 3 and 30-minute interval stimulations to the visual cortex of rabbits were compared with each other. Eventually, in kindling with a longer interstimulation interval, after-discharges induced in every trial of stimulation were often lengthened in duration more prominently than those with the shorter interstimulation interval and, furthermore, occasional slight relapses in the afterdischarge duration occurred more infrequently in the former than in the latter. These results suggest that the interstimulation interval plays an important role in the development of acute kindling, presumably in relation to postictal inhibition. In addition, spontaneous interictal or ictal epileptiform discharges occasionally arising during the 3-minute interstimulation intervals were reported. These spontaneous discharges may suggest a high epileptogenicity in acute kindling. 相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Minimally invasive surgery, with its advantages of early return to normal activity and good cosmetic results, is an important goal in the treatment of patients with mucosal ulcerative colitis. The aim of this study was to compare outcomes utilizing a mini-laparotomy approach to total abdominal colectomy for mucosal ulcerative colitis with those of the conventional approach. METHODOLOGY: Eleven patients scheduled to undergo the first (total abdominal colectomy) of a 2 or 3-stage operation for mucosal ulcerative colitis via a mini-laparotomy between 1999 and 2001 were prospectively studied. The mini-laparotomy described here involves total abdominal colectomy performed through a skin incision shorter than 7 cm. Seven similar patients who underwent conventional laparotomy between 1995 and 1998 served as the control group. RESULTS: The mini-laparotomy approach was accomplished in 9 patients (81.8%). Patient characteristics between cases and controls were similar. Postoperative intervals until standing, walking, flatus, urinary catheter removal, and tolerance of solid diet were significantly shorter in the mini-laparotomy group (P = 0.031, P = 0.023, P = 0.0033, P = 0.0093, and P = 0.023, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: A mini-laparotomy approach to total abdominal colectomy appears feasible and safe in selected patient with mucosal ulcerative colitis and poses an attractive alternative to conventional laparotomy in patients similar to those presented here. 相似文献

Motor functional recovery after stroke may be attributable to cerebral reorganization. We used near-infrared spectroscopy, which measures non-invasively the changes in oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin concentrations in response to neural activation, for monitoring cerebral activation in stroke patients, and investigated the longitudinal changes in functional laterality of activations in the primary sensorimotor cortex during unilateral audio-paced (1 Hz) hand movement. We examined five ischemic stroke patients (4 females and 1 male, 52-67 years old) with mild to moderate hemiparesis at acute stages and chronic stages at least 1 month later. Normal subjects (3 females and 2 males, 47-63 years old) were also included. Unilateral hand movement activated predominantly the contralateral primary sensorimotor cortex in the normal subjects and the stroke patients when they moved unaffected hand. Affected hand movements activated bilateral sensorimotor cortices early after stroke (< 25 days of stroke onset), whereas the activation pattern returned toward normal at later periods (> 35 days). The contralaterality index (0.34 +/- 0.12 in normal control) was reduced at early periods (0.00 +/- 0.03, p < 0.01) after stroke, and returned to normal (0.35 +/- 0.24) as motor function recovered. These findings suggest that a transient increase in motor activation in the ipsilateral intact hemisphere within 1 month may play an important role in the recovery from motor dysfunction after stroke. 相似文献

Purpose
The aim of this study was to investigate the outcomes correlated with our treatment strategy for prosthetic graft infection.Methods
Seventeen patients were treated for prosthetic graft infections between 1997 and 2009. Initially, total graft excision was applied in five cases, partial graft excision was applied in six cases and graft preservation with drainage and irrigation was applied in six cases. Among the graft-preserved cases, four patients were infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and treated with gentian violet (GV).Results
The overall survival rate was 88 % at 30 days and 82 % at 1 year in this series. Of the excised cases, nine patients survived; however, two patients died. Among the cases in which MRSA-infected grafts were preserved, three patients survived; however, one patient died under a septicemic state. Infected graft preservation was applied at a high rate of 36 %, and the mortality rate remained at 16 %, without any signs of graft reinfection.Conclusions
In the treatment of infected grafts, the patient’s condition should be considered in order to select the appropriate treatment in each case. Graft preservation should be considered as an alternative treatment option, especially in high-risk patients, and GV can be effective for conservative treatment of prosthetic graft infections, including MRSA infections. 相似文献8.

Summary The electrophysiological effects of flecainide acetate (3×10–6 M) on stretched atrial tissue were investigated using guinea-pig left atrial muscle fibers. Before stretching, the resting membrane potential was not affected by flecainide at 1 Hz, although the overshoot potential (Eov) and the action potential duration at 50% repolarization (APD50) were slightly but significantly decreased by 2±1 mV and 2±1 msec, respectively. The effective refractory period (ERP) was increased by 3±1 msec. The reduction of
max was 20.6±1.2%. The half-maximum potential (Vh) of the relationship between
max and the resting potential was shifted to become more negative by flecainide (from –60.6±2.1 mV to –63.2±1.7 mV). After 90–120 min of washout with drug-free Tyrode's solution, the tissue was mechanically stretched to 150% of its slack length. Stretching significantly decreased the
max by 16.9±3.1%, along with a slight but significant increase in ERP (3±1 msec) and shifted Vh to become more negative (from –60.6±2.1 to –63.1±1.8 mV). In the presence of flecainide,
max further decreased by 20.2±2.6%, and Vh shifted from –63.1±1.8 to –65.0±1.5 mV. Comparison with the control unstretched fibers showed that flecainide significantly decreased
max by 34.0±2.7%, reduced the resting membrane potential by 3±1 mV, decreased Eov by 4±1 mV, and shifted Vh from –60.6±2.1 to –65.0±1.5 mV, while the APD50 and ERP did not change. In conclusion, the reduction of
max in the presence of flecainide was much greater in the stretched atrial muscle fibers than in the unstretched fibers, because the

The aim of this study is to evaluate leukocyte-endothelial adhesion during ischemia/reperfusion injury. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) were isolated from healthy volunteers and incubated in the presence of 2% O2 (hypoxia) or 21% O2 (normoxia) at 37°C for two hours. In some experiments, whole blood was subjected to hypoxia or normoxia prior to PMN isolation. Flowcytometric analysis and adhesion assays were carried out using these PMN. Moreover, adhesion assay was carried out using PMN, prepared from the patients who underwent infrarenal aortic aneurysmectomy with aortic clamping at various time points as an in vivo model of ischemial reperfusion injury. Flowcytometric analysis revealed an increased expression of CD11b in PMN subjected to hypoxia compared with those subjected to normoxia prior to isolation. Interestingly, these phenomena were not observed with PMN isolated prior to being subjected with hypoxia. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using serum prepared from whole blood subjected to hypoxia revealed elevated levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- compared with those subjected to normoxia. PMN obtained during aneurysmectomy exhibited an increased adhesion to activated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), compared with those taken from the same patients prior to the operation. In contrast, PMN prepared after aortic clamp, exhibited a significant reduced adhesion to activated HUVEC. Hypoxic condition, induced CD11b expression on PMN in vitro. PMN subjected to hypoxic condition in vivo exhibited an increased adhesion to activated endothelium. Elevated level of serum TNF- may be involved in this phenomenon. 相似文献

The present study was designed to provide a systemic analysis of prognosis in 62 patients who underwent hepatic resection for colorectal liver metastasis. The analyzed factors included microvessel counts stained by CD34 and expression of two adhesion molecules, E-cadherin and CD44 variant exon 6-(v6) in these tumors. No significant factors related to recurrence were identified and only negative expression of CD44v6 tended to correlate with recurrence (P = 0.075). A short disease-free period to recurrence was noted in patients with high CEA levels (>10 ng/ml) and H2/3 classification. A short surgical margin, H2/3 classification, high microvessel counts (>60/field, x200), and negative expression of CD44v6 and E-cadherin tended to be associated with poor prognosis. A high microvessel count was the most significant prognostic factor by multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression model. Hepatic resection without tumor exposure and a careful follow-up in cases identified with poor prognostic factors are necessary. 相似文献
