Synthesis and Characterization of Holmium-Doped Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Rare earth atoms exhibit several interesting properties, for example, large magnetic moments and luminescence. Introducing these atoms into a different matrix can lead to a material that shows multiple interesting effects. Holmium atoms were incorporated into an iron oxide nanoparticle and the concentration of the dopant atom was changed in order to determine its influence on the host crystal. Its magnetic and magneto-optical properties were investigated by vibrating sample magnetometry and Faraday rotation measurements. The luminescent characteristics of the material, in solution and incorporated in a polymer thin film, were probed by fluorescence experiments.

Aortic valve lymphoma presenting as acute coronary syndrome

Primary cardiac lymphoma is a very rare tumor which commonly affects the right atrium, although any chamber may be affected. Over the past few decades, the incidence of the lesion has increased, due mainly to growing numbers of immunocompromised patients, either HIV-related or iatrogenic. Because of this rapid evolution, the situation represents an oncologic emergency, and therefore early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Although MRI is the most sensitive modality, open biopsy remains the 'gold standard' for reaching the diagnosis. However, the overall prognosis is poor. Herein is presented a case of a large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma involving only the aortic valve.     

Complete genomic nucleotide sequence and analysis of the temperate bacteriophage VWB

The entire double-stranded DNA genome of the Streptomyces venezuelae bacteriophage VWB was sequenced and analyzed. Its size is 49,220 bp with an overall molar G + C content of 71.2 mol%. Sixty-one potential open reading frames were identified and annotated using several complementary bioinformatics tools. Clusters of functionally related putative genes were defined, supporting a refined version of the modular theory of phage evolution.     

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions: an objective technique for the screening of hearing loss in children treated with platin derivatives

In order to develop a sensitive audiometric protocol for identifying ototoxicity in children, a retrospective study of 16 children treated with cisplatin and/or carboplatin was performed. Audiometric testing was done by means of pure-tone threshold audiometry (PTA), high-frequency audiometry (HFA), and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs).Cisplatin caused a sensorineural high-frequency hearing loss in the study group compared to the controls (p < 0.01). Sixty-six percent of the cisplatin patients had a grade 2 or 3 ototoxicity. However, ototoxicity was not found in the patients treated with carboplatin. An excellent correlation was found between DPOAE levels and results obtained by audiometry (r = 0.82).Patients exposed to cisplatin are at significant risk for the development of drug-induced sensorineural hearing loss. Because of the several advantages of DPOAEs (noninvasive, objective, rapid, easy to use, sensitive) this method should be added in the audiological follow-up in infants and toddlers.     

Hemodynamic effects of nebivolol in men: comparison of radionuclide angiocardiography with systolic time intervals

In a subacute experiment the authors studied the effects of a fourteen -day treatment with nebivolol, 5 mg once a day, in 10 healthy male volunteers with a mean age of thirty-one, twenty-five to thirty-nine years, by comparing the results of the resting ratio of the preejection period (PEP) to the left ventricular ejection time (LVET), as measured by systolic time intervals (STI), with the results obtained by equilibrium radionuclide angiocardiography (ERNA), using technetium 99m-labeled autologous red blood cells as a marker. A submaximal treadmill exercise test performed before and during treatment demonstrated that nebivolol significantly (p less than 0.01) reduced peak exercise heart rate and systolic blood pressure from a mean value of 158 +/- 5.4 bpm to 131 +/- 4.3 bpm and from 171 +/- 4.9 mmHg to 144 +/- 4.5 mmHg respectively. The data from the STI and ERNA were calculated and analyzed independently by two observers. A highly significant (r = 0.8182, p = 0.0038) correlation was found between the changes of stroke volume (SV) and PEPc/LVETc during treatment with nebivolol. Furthermore end-diastolic volume significantly(p = 0.03) increased from a mean value of 177 +/- 10.1 ml to 198 +/- 6 ml and stroke volume significantly (p = 0.01) increased from 120 +/- 6.8 ml to 136 +/- 6.3 ml. Systemic vascular resistance tended to decrease from a mean value of 11.4 +/- 1.28 units to 10.6 +/- 1.10 units.
