This study compared parent-reported competencies and behavioral/emotional problems in demographically-matched samples of Greek and American children, ages 6–11. Parents of 356 children of each nationality completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Competence scores were higher for American children, except on Academic Competence, where scores were higher for Greek children. Greek scores were significantly higher than American scores on the Withdrawn, Anxious/Depressed, Attention Problems, Delinquent Behavior, Aggressive Behavior, Internalizing, Externalizing, and Total Problem scales. On the Anxious/Depressed syndrome, nationality accounted for 14% of the variance. There were few main effects for sex and age and fewer interactions. The higher problem scores in the Greek sample were partly due to the tendency of Greek parents to use extreme item scores. When items were scored present v. absent, Greek scores were higher only on Withdrawn, Anxious/Depressed, Internalizing, and Total Problems, while American scores were higher on Somatic Complaints and Thought Problems. Nationality differences in rates of referral for mental health services and sample differences in exclusion criteria for prior mental health services may have contributed to differences in problem scores. Results are compared to findings from other cross-cultural studies.
Zusammenfassung Diese Studie vergleicht die Fähigkeiten und Verhaltens- bzw. emotionalen Auffälligkeiten in demographisch parallelisierten Stichproben von griechischen und amerikanischen Kindern im Alter von 6-11 Jahren. Die Eltern von 356 Kindern der beiden Nationalitäten füllten die Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) aus. Die Kompetenzwerte waren bei den amerikanischen Kindern mit Ausnahme der akademischen Fähigkeiten höher. Die griechischen Werte waren signifikant höher als die amerikanischen im Hinblick auf die Skalen Zurückhaltung, ängstlich/depressiv, Aufmerksamkeitsstörungen, delinquentes Verhalten, aggressives Verhalten, Internalisation, Externalisation und Gesamtauffälligkeiten. Im Hinblick auf das ängstlich/depressive Syndrom war die Nationalität für 14% der Varianz verantwortlich. Nur vereinzelt wurden Haupteffekte im Hinblick auf Geschlecht und Alter und eine geringere Anzahl Interaktionen festgestellt. Die höheren Problemwerte in der griechischen Stichprobe waren teilweise durch die Tendenz der griechischen Eltern bedingt, extreme Werte anzukreuzen. Bei den Items, die als vorhanden bzw. nicht vorhanden gewertet werden mußten, waren die griechischen Werte nur bei den Skalen Zurückhaltung, ängstlich/depressiv, Internalisation und Gesamtprobleme höher, während amerikanische Werte für die Skalen körperliche Beschwerden und Denkstörungen höher lagen. Nationalitätsunterschiede der Zuweisungsraten zu psychosozialen Diensten und Stichprobenunterschieden im Hinblick auf die Ausschlußkriterien für vorangegangene Inanspruchnahme psychosozialer Dienste könnten zu den unterschiedlichen Problemwerten beigetragen haben. Die Ergebnisse werden verglichen mit anderen transkulturellen Studien.

Résumé Cette étude a comparé les compétences et les problèmes de comportement et affectifs rapportés par les parents d'un échantillon d'enfants grecs et américains âgés de 6 à 11 ans appariés démographiquement. Les parents de 356 enfants de chaque nationalité ont rempli la Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Les scores de compétence étaient plus élevés pour les enfants américains excepté pour la compétence scolaire pour laquelle les scores étaient plus élevés chez les enfants grecs. Les scores grecs étaient significativement plus hauts que les scores américains quant au retrait, l'anxiété-dépression, les problèmes d'attention, le comportement délinquant, le comportement agressif, les échelles d'internalisation, d'externalisation et de problèmes totaux. Pour le syndrome anxiodépressif, la nationalité intervenait pour une variance de 14%. Il y avait peu d'effets principaux en ce qui concerne le sexe et l'âge. Les scores de problèmes les plus élevés dans les échantillons grecs étaient en partie dûs à la tendance des parents grecs à utiliser des items extrêmes. Quand les items étaient cotés présents versus absents, les scores grecs étaient plus élevés seulement en ce qui concerne le retrait, l'anxiété-dépression, l'internalisation et les problèmes totaux tandis que les scores américains étaient plus hauts en ce qui concerne les plaintes somatiques et les problèmes de pensée. Les différences de nationalité en ce qui concerne les taux de référence à des services de santé mentale et les différences des échantillons dans les critères d'exclusion pour l'utilisation antérieure de services de santé mentale, peuvent avoir contribué aux différences dans les scores de problèmes. Les résultats sont comparés aux autres études transculturelles.

The longevity and excellent health status of the population of Crete has been attributed to its lifestyle and dietary habits. The impact of Greek Orthodox Christian Church fasting on these dietary habits has never been studied. One hundred and twenty Greek Orthodox Christians living in Crete participated in a 1-year prospective study. One half of the subjects, who fasted regularly (fasters), and sixty non-faster controls were followed longitudinally for the three main fasting periods over 1 year; Christmas (40 d), Lent (48 d) and the Assumption (15 d). Pre- and end-holy days measurements were performed in each fasting period including: 24 h dietary recall, blood collection and anthropometric measurements. Based on the 24 h recall, fasters as compared with controls had lower intakes of end-holy days dietary cholesterol, total fat, saturated fatty acids, trans-fatty acids and protein (P < 0.001). Fasters presented a decrease of 753 kJ (180 kcal) in end-holy days energy intake (P < 0.05) compared with an increase of 573 kJ (137 kcal) in the controls (P < 0.05). Fasters had a decrease in end-holy days Ca intake (P < 0.001) and an increase in end-holy days total dietary fibre (P < 0.001) and folate (P < 0.05), attributed to their higher consumption of fruit and vegetables in end-holy periods (P < 0.001). There were no differences for other vitamins or minerals between pre- and end-holy periods in both groups except for vitamin B2. The Orthodox Christian dietary regulations are an important component of the Mediterranean diet of Crete characterised by low levels of dietary saturated fatty acids, high levels of fibre and folate, and a high consumption of fruit, vegetables and legumes.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to evaluate brain myelination by measuring the magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) and to measure grey (GMV) and white matter volume (WMV) in macrocephalic children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Seven NF1 patients (aged 0.65–16.67 years) and seven age- and gender-matched controls were studied. A three-dimensional (3D) gradient echo sequence with and without magnetization transfer (MT) prepulse was used for MTR assessment. Volume measurements of GM and WM were performed by applying segmentation techniques on T2-weighted turbo spin echo images (T2WI). MTR of unidentified bright objects (UBOs) on T2WI in cerebellar white matter (52.8±3.3), cerebral peduncles (48.5±1.5), hippocampus (52.6±1.1), internal capsule (55.7±0.3), globus pallidus (52.7±3.9), and periventricular white matter (52.6±1.2) was lower than in the corresponding areas of controls (64.6±2.5, 60.8±1.3, 56.4±0.9, 64.7±1.9, 59.2±2.3, 63.6±1.7, respectively; p<0.05). MTR of normal-appearing brain tissue in patients was not significantly different than in controls. Surface area (mm2) of the corpus callosum (809.1±62.8), GMV (cm3) (850.7±42.9), and white matter volume (WMV) (cm3) (785.1±85.2) were greater in patients than in controls (652.5±52.6 mm2, 611.2±92.1 cm3, 622.5±108.7 cm3, respectively; p<0.05). To conclude, macrocephaly in NF1 patients is related to increased GMV and WMV and corpus callosum enlargement. MTR of UBOs is lower than that of normal brain tissue.  相似文献

This study describes a novel non-specific universal virus detection method that permits molecular detection of viruses in biological materials containing mixtures of cells and viruses. Samples are subjected to nuclease digestion and ultracentrifugation to separate encapsidated viral nucleic acids from cellular nucleic acids. A degenerate oligonucleotide primer PCR (DOP-PCR) that has been optimized for the non-specific amplification of virus sized genomes is then employed. Virus identification is performed by sequencing of cloned DOP-PCR products followed by sequence comparison to sequences published in GenBank. This method was used to detect a variety of DNA viruses (including HSV, VZV, SV40, AAV, and EBV) and RNA viruses (including HTLV-I, HTLV-II, influenza, and poliovirus), which were spiked into cells, constitutively expressed in cell culture, or detected in productively infected cultured cells. This novel approach was compared with a non-specific virus detection method used previously and found to be several logs more sensitive. This type of approach has potential utility in solving virus detection and discovery problems where other methods have failed.  相似文献

This study examined growth patterns in adaptation of immigrant youth from a risk and resilience perspective. Students from first- and second-generation immigrant families living in Greece and their nonimmigrant classmates (N = 1,057) were assessed over the first 3 years of secondary school (ages 13-15). Three-level hierarchical linear models were used to disentangle individual and classroom-level effects on initial level and change in academic achievement, conduct, peer popularity, and psychological well-being. At the individual level, adaptation was more related to self-efficacy and parental school involvement (resources) than immigrant status and social adversity (risks). Only for academic achievement did risks explain variance when resources were controlled. Parental school involvement moderated the effect of immigrant status for initial level and growth in achievement. For all students, achievement and conduct worsened over time. At the classroom level, socioeconomic and ethnic composition of the classroom moderated the effects of self-efficacy and immigrant status on academic achievement and peer popularity, respectively. Second-generation immigrants were more popular than first-generation immigrants, but showed a larger decrease over time in school achievement. Results support a developmental, differentiated, and contextualized approach to the study of immigrant youth adaptation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We aimed at examining the intake of ready-to-eat cereals (RTEC) among adolescents in Crete, Greece, and investigate relationships with health and diet indicators. METHODS: A sample of 392 adolescents (183 boys, 209 girls) aged 15 +/- 0.4 years, attending high schools of two major counties in Crete, was studied to determine consumption of RTEC using a frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements were performed and blood was drawn for analysis of serum lipoproteins and blood glucose (BG). The physical fitness was assessed with the 20-meter shuttle run test (SRT) and the amount of time watching television was estimated. Nutrient intakes were calculated through 24-hour dietary recalls. RESULTS: 42% (n = 77) of boys and 43% (n = 90) of girls reported consumption of RTEC at least once per week. Approximately 40% of the male and 47% of the female consumers reported eating RTEC only at meals other than breakfast. RTEC consumption was inversely related to the obesity indices and BG levels, and positively related to the SRT (p < 0.05 in all analyses). RTEC consumers had significantly higher intakes of fibre, magnesium, calcium, iron, folate, and vitamins A, B2 and B6 (p < 0.05 in all analyses). CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated favourable associations between RTEC intake and health and diet indicators in Greek adolescents, with potential implications for improved health status and chronic disease risk reduction.  相似文献

This study investigated psychological problems of 466 Greek and 790 German non-referred, non-migrant children aged 6–11 years using the Child Behavior Checklist. Comparisons between the two countries on the total behaviour problem scores, the total number of positive codings, the externalizing and internalizing scales and the social competence scales revealed a number of cultural differences. Greek children displayed consistently higher problem scores and lower scores on social and activities competence scores than the German children with the one exception of school competence. These results are discussed in relation to different intercultural attitudes, meanings and expectations of parents on their children.
Zusammenfassung In dieser Studie werden die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung psychischer Probleme unter Verwendung der Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) von 466 griechischen und 790 deutschen Kinder im Alter von 6 – 11 Jahren, die nicht emigrierten und unabhüngig davon, ob sie behandelt wurden, dargestellt. Die Resultate zeigten, da die Werte der griechischen Kinder im Vergleich mit den deutschen durchgehend hüher lagen, was den Gesamtwert der Verhaltensskala, die Anzahl aller positiven Codierungen, die Werte der Breitbandskalen für externalisierendes und internalisierendes Verhalten sowie die Kompetenzskalen für soziales Verhalten und Aktivitüten betreffen. Die einzige Ausnahme bezog sich auf die Werte in bezug auf die Schulkompetenz, in der deutsche Kinder als weniger kompetent beschrieben wurden. Diese Ergebnisse werden im Lichte möglicher unterschiedlicher kulturelle Ansichten, Bedeutungen und Erwartungen der Eltern in Hinsicht auf ihre Kinder diskutiert.

Résumé L'étude a recherché les problèmes psychologiques des 466 enfants grecs et 790 enfants allemands non migrants et non référés à un service psychologique âgés de 6 à 11 ans, au moyen de la Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Les comparaisons entre les deux pays sur le total du score de problèmes comportementaux, le nombre total de cotations positives, les échelles d'externalisation et d'internalisation et de compétence sociale ont montré de nombreuses différences culturelles. Les enfants grecs ont obtenu des scores signifícativement plus hauts concernant les problèmes et plus bas en ce qui concerne les compétences sociales et les activités par rapport aux enfants allemands, à la seule exception de la compétence scolaire. Ces résultats sont discutés en relation avec les différentes attitudes inter-culturelles et par rapport aux attentes des parents quant à leurs enfants.
