Informed by Ward’s (1996) theory of psychological and sociocultural adaptation, this study identified links between acculturation and the mental health of older Iranian immigrants living in Canada (N = 103). According to Ward and colleagues, both psychological and sociocultural adaptation change at different rates and extend into later life. For this study, participants 50+ years of age and born in Iran completed questionnaires measuring life satisfaction, depressive symptoms, acculturation, and demographic and sociocultural variables (e.g., pre- and post-immigration occupational status). We collected study data anonymously in Persian to obtain responses from long-term residents of Canada as well as more recent immigrants who may not read or write English. We examined both life satisfaction and (the absence of) depressive symptoms as distinct forms of psychological adaptation; these emerged as independent predictors of acculturation. Contrary to theory, acculturation appears to predict life satisfaction, not vice versa; moreover, there seems to be no direct link between depressive symptoms and acculturation. Our findings suggest that integration within Canadian society is associated with higher life satisfaction. In contrast, sociocultural factors are indirectly associated with life satisfaction (except age) and acculturation (except ethnic diversity of social interactions). Involuntary migrants reported higher levels of depression, whereas loss of occupational status is associated with reduced life satisfaction. Implications for future research and health policy are discussed.  相似文献

Screening of 1,750 pneumococcal isolates for common serotypes by PCR was followed by Quellung reaction analysis of PCR-negative isolates with a comparison to the conventional (Quellung reaction only) approach. PCR agreed with Quellung reaction results for 99% of isolates. The sequential PCR/Quellung reaction algorithm is accurate and more cost-effective than the conventional approach.  相似文献

Background

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of nitroxin biofertilizer and chemical fertilizer on the growth, yield, and essential oil composition of dill. The experiment was conducted under field condition in randomized complete block design with three replications and two factors.

Results

The first factor was the concentrations of nitroxin biofertilizer (0%, 50%, and 100%) of the recommended amount (1 l of biological fertilizer for 30 kg of seed). The second factor was the following chemical fertilizer treatments: no fertilizer (control) and 50 and 100 kg ha?1 urea along with 300 kg ha?1 ammonium phosphate. Different characteristics such as plant height, number of umbel per plant, number of umbellet per umbel, number of grain per umbellet, 1,000 seed weight, grain yield, biological yield, and oil percentage were recorded. According to the results, the highest height, biological yield, and grain yield components (except harvest index) were obtained on biological fertilizer. The results showed the highest essential oil content detected in biological fertilizer and chemical fertilizer. Identification of essential oil composition showed that the content of carvone increased with the application of biofertilizers and chemical fertilizers. The results indicated that the application of biofertilizers enhanced yield and other plant criteria in this plant.

Conclusions

Generally, it seems that the use of biofertilizers or combinations of biofertilizer and chemical fertilizer could improve dill performance in addition to reduction of environmental pollution.

In the present study, intraperitoneal (IP) administration of the dopaminergic receptor agonist apomorphine (0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/kg) induced a dose-dependent licking in rats. The intraperitoneal injection of the alpha1'adrenoceptor agonist phenylephrine (1-8 mg/kg) but not the alpha2-adrenoceptor agonist clonidine (0.025-0.05 mg/kg) decreased licking induced by apomorphine. The alpha-adrenoceptor antagonists prazosin, phenoxybenzamine, and yohimbine also reduced the apomorphine response significantly. The response induced by phenylephrine was decreased by a dose of prazosin. The beta1-adrenenocepor agonist dobutamine and beta2-adrenenocepor agonist salbutamol did not alter the apomorphine response. However, beta2-adrenenocepor antagonists atenolol and propranolol reduced the apomorphine effect. It may be concluded that alpha1- and possibly beta1-adrenoceptor mechanisms may be involved in modulation of licking behavior.  相似文献

Objective

One of the best known side effects of using opium is spasm of the sphincter of Oddi, which may increase the diameter of the extrahepatic bile ducts. Ultrasound is the first imaging modality used for evaluating the biliary system because it is commonly available and noninvasive. The principal objective of this study was to measure the common bile duct (CBD) diameter via ultrasonography in opium addicts and to evaluate the relation between the CBD diameter and the period of addiction.

Materials and Methods

This research was an analytical-cross sectional study that was done on 110 opium addicts that were admitted to a drug treatment center. The diameter of the CBD in these cases was measured by ultrasonography and the results were analyzed with other factors like age, the period of addiction and the laboratory findings.

Results

According to the findings, there is a significant increase in the range of the CBD diameter in comparison with normal bile ducts. Also, the mean diameter of the CBD in the different age groups showed a significant difference (p < 0.0001) and there was a significant relation between the CBD diameter and the period of addiction (p < 0.001, r = 0.74); so, with the increased length of the addiction period, the mean CBD diameter increases.

Conclusion

Opium addiction is one of the factors that causes extrahepatic bile duct dilatation, so in these cases, if no obstructing lesion was found on ultrasound examination and the serum bilirobine and alkaline phosphatase levels are normal, then further evaluation is not needed.  相似文献

Ongoing surveillance for Streptococcus pneumoniae is needed to assess the impact of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduced in 2010 (PCV13). Forty-two U.S. centers submitted S. pneumoniae isolates between 1 October 2012 and 31 March 2013. Susceptibility testing was performed by use of a broth dilution method as recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Serotyping was performed by multiplex PCR and the Quellung reaction. Multidrug resistance (MDR) was defined as nonsusceptibility to penicillin (PNSP; MIC ≥ 0.12 μg/ml) combined with resistance to ≥2 non-β-lactam antimicrobials. Penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP) was defined as a penicillin MIC of ≥2 μg/ml. For the 1,498 isolates collected during 2012-13, the PRSP and MDR rates were 14.2 and 21.0%, respectively. These percentages were lower than rates obtained in a surveillance study conducted 4 years earlier in 2008-09 (17.0 and 26.6%, respectively). The most common serotypes identified in 2012-13 were 3, 35B, and 19A, each representing 9 to 10% of all isolates. The largest percentage of PNSP in 2012-13 were found in serotypes 35B (24.8%), 19A (23.5%), and 15A (10.3%). Predominant PRSP serotypes were 19A (54.5%), 35B (28.2%), and 19F (7.0%). Major MDR serotypes were 19A (38.5%), 15A (16.9%), 6C (8.3%), and 35B (6.4%). The change in prevalence of PCV13 serotypes (43.4 to 27.1%) was primarily due to a decrease in serotype 19A strains, i.e., 22% of all strains in 2008-09 to 10% of all strains in 2012-13. Among the PNSP subset, serotypes showing a proportional increase were 35B, 15B, and 23B. Among MDR strains, the largest proportional increases were observed in serotypes 35B, 15B, and 23A.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of a gamma-amino-butyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor agonist and antagonist on morphine-induced locomotor sensitization in male albino mice. Subcutaneous administration to mice of a high dose of morphine (30 mg/kg), but not lower doses (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg) increased locomotion. The maximum locomotor activity was achieved during a 20-min measurement period. The locomotor response to a low dose of morphine (5 mg/kg, subcutaneously) given on day 9 was enhanced in mice pretreated with morphine (7.5, 15 and 30 mg/kg/day x 3 days), indicating that sensitization had developed. Three-day intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of the GABAA receptor agonist, muscimol (0.025, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 microg/mouse/day) significantly decreased both morphine-induced motor stimulation and locomotor sensitization. On the other hand, a 3-day pretreatment with the GABAA-receptor antagonist, bicuculline (0.25, 0.5 and 1 microg/mouse/day) reduced morphine (15 mg/kg)-induced locomotor sensitization. Repeated i.c.v. injections of a lower dose of bicuculline (0.25 microg/mouse/day x 3 days) by itself also decreased morphine-induced locomotion. Furthermore, repeated i.c.v. administration of bicuculline (0.25, 0.5 and 1 microg/mouse/day x 3 days) decreased the effect of i.c.v. injection of muscimol (0.1 microg/mouse/day x 3 days) on locomotor activity induced by morphine (5 mg/kg) in both control and sensitized mice. The magnitude of this response was, however, variable. The results indicate that GABAA receptors might be involved in the acquisition of morphine-induced sensitization.  相似文献

This report presents the results of the first faunistic study of hard ticks in Qazvin province of Iran. The primary objective was to determine the species diversity and geographic distribution of hard ticks that parasitize domestic ruminants. Information about the abiotic preferences of these species has been provided. A total of 286 cattle, 1,053 goats, and 2,050 sheep were examined in 13 villages in 28 flocks distributed throughout the studied areas. Total direct body collections of ticks were made from each domestic ruminant. A total of 228 Ixodid specimens belonging to nine species in three different genera were recorded in the areas, including Boophilus annulatus (Say, 1821), Hyalomma anatolicum Koch, 1844, Hyalomma asiaticum (Schulze and Schlettke, 1929), Hyalomma detritum Schulze, 1919, Hyalomma dromedarii Koch, 1844, Hyalomma marginatum Koch 1844, Hyalomma schulzei Olenev, 1931, Rhipicephalus bursa Canestrini and Fanz, 1878 and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806). The most abundant species on sheep was R. sanguineus (46.92%), while B. annulatus (6.6%) found only on cattle. A finding of great significance was that R. sanguineus, the main vector of babesiosis, is firmly established throughout the counties. A further objective of the study was to compare the abundance of the major tick species on domestic ruminants. This was carried out at 19 sampling sites. The highest number of ticks was collected in July–August during the hot season.  相似文献
