The water content of organic solvents is one of the crucial properties that affect the quality of the products and the efficiency of the manufacturing processes. The established water determination methods such as Karl Fischer titration and gas chromatography require skilled operators, specific reagents, and prolonged measurement time. Thus, they are not suitable for both on-line and in-line applications. In this study, we aim to develop a real-time and low-cost device with reliable accuracy. The proposed device based on a newly developed thermal approach could non-destructively detect the water content in multiple organic solvents at low concentrations with high accuracy and without the use of any specific reagent. Experiments were performed for the determination of water content in organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol. The results show that the proposed device is feasible for the water content determination in methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol at 0–1% w/w. A Bland–Altman plot to illustrate the differences in measurements between the proposed device and coulometric Karl Fischer titration shows that most of the measurements lie within the limits of agreement where 95% of the differences between the two methods are expected to fall in the range of −0.13% and 0.09%.

The proposed device could non-destructively detect the water content in organic solvents at low concentrations with high accuracy and without any specific reagent. It could determine the water content in methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol at 0–1% w/w.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate adrenal function in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) after induction therapy with corticosteroid and other cytotoxic agents.Study design Children with ALL (N=24) were treated with prednisolone (40 mg/m(2) per day) for 28 days during the induction phase followed by 1 week of oral dexamethasone every 4 weeks. A low-dose (1 microg) adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) test was performed 2 weeks after discontinuation of prednisolone; it was repeated 2 weeks later and then every 4 weeks in patients with adrenal suppression until normal response was achieved. RESULTS: Adrenal suppression was found in 46% of patients at 2 weeks after discontinuation of prednisolone; it persisted in 38%, 29%, and 13% of patients through 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 20 weeks, respectively. Adrenal suppression appeared to last significantly longer in children aged >or=5 years than in children aged <5 years. Four children developed febrile neutropenia; all belonged to the adrenal suppressed group and were unable to mount an adequate adrenal response to the stress. CONCLUSIONS: About 50% of children with ALL developed adrenal suppression 2 weeks after a 4-week induction therapy with prednisolone. The suppression could persist through 20 weeks and may hinder an adequate adrenal response during acute febrile illness.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study to determine the prevalence of migraine in seventh grade Thai students in 4 junior high schools in Bangkok, Thailand, according to the diagnostic criteria of the second edition of the Classification of Headache of the International Headache Society was conducted in July 2004. The study included a screening self-administered questionnaire and face-to-face interview with physical examination. The diagnosis of migraine was made and confirmed by 2 pediatric neurologists. All of 1789 students in participating schools completed the questionnaire. After 2 interviews, 248 students (13.8%) were diagnosed with migraine. The prevalence in girls was higher than that in boys (16.2% vs 11.7%). Migraine as having aura was diagnosed in 34 students (13.7%). One student had sporadic hemiplegic migraine. Among 248 children, 176 (71%) reported the duration of headache between 1 and 2 hours. The leading precipitating factor of migraine was the stress related to daily school activities (17.7%). There were 32 students (12.9%) with frequent and intense headache who were referred to their primary physicians for further management. This study had disclosed a high prevalence of migraine in seventh grade Thai students in Bangkok City and reflected the existing burden of this illness in Thai students.  相似文献

Penicillium marneffei is an opportunistic fungal infection that usually causes disseminated disease, mainly in immunocompromised individuals, especially those with HIV infection. Untreated cases are usually fatal. Diagnosis is traditionally made by biopsy and/or culture; successful diagnosis by fine needle aspiration (FNA) has only been reported once. We present eight cases of HIV-infected patients with lymphadenopathy caused by P. marneffei infection, in which the diagnosis was made by FNA. In all cases, intracellular and extracellular yeast forms were visualized, and the characteristic cross-septation of P. marneffei was highlighted by GMS staining. All diagnoses were confirmed by culture. Anti-fungal treatment for P. marneffei was initiated, resulting in marked clinical improvement. We conclude that a diagnosis of lymphadenopathy caused by P. marneffei can reliably be made by FNA. The diagnosis is more rapid than biopsy or culture, allowing rapid institution of therapy, particularly important in immunocompromised patients. In all our cases, not only were lymphoma and other causes of lymphadenopathy ruled out, but also the necessity for an open surgical biopsy was obviated. This can be especially beneficial to patients (e.g., three in our study) in which lymphadenopathy is confined to deep intra-abdominal nodes.  相似文献

Leptospirosis, which is caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira, is a zoonotic disease of global importance and an emerging health problem. We studied patients suspected of having leptospirosis in Kamphaeng Phet Province, Thailand. Of 106 patients with suspected leptospirosis evaluated at the provincial hospital, 69 (65%) were confirmed positive (titer > or = 1:800 or > or = 4-fold increase in titer) by microscopic agglutination testing. Seventy-seven percent (53) of the cases occurred during the rainy season (June through November). Sera reacted predominantly with Bratislava, Autumnalis, and Icterohaemorrhagiae serovars. The screening Leptospira Dip-S-Ticks test had poor sensitivity (32%) but a specificity of 100% compared with a Leptospira IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Leptospirosis was found to be a frequently confirmed cause of morbidity in Kamphaeng Phet Province in those suspected of having the illness.  相似文献

Migraine is a common childhood illness with expected favorable outcome. A study of the long-term clinical course of childhood migraine will provide information of evolution of migraine. A cohort study for 3-academic-year was conducted in Thai junior high-school children from July 2005 to February 2008 to determine the clinical course of migraine. Two hundred and forty-eight students in four junior high schools diagnosed with migraine according to ICHD-II in July 2005 were recruited. Each student was serially evaluated twice yearly from 7th grade during each semester of the academic year until the second semester of 9th grade. Determination of the characteristics, severity, frequency, and treatment of headache were obtained by questionnaire and direct interview. At the final evaluation, clinical course of headache was categorized into seven patterns. Among enrolled students, 209 (84.3%) completed the study. Twenty-eight (13.5%) students had no recurrent headache while that of 153 (73.5%) improved. No improvement of migraine and worsened migraine were observed in four students (1.8%) and 24 students (11.2%), respectively. Spontaneous remission and avoidance of precipitating causes contributed to relief of migraine in the majority of the students. Stress-related daily school activities and inadequate rest were reported as common precipitating factors among students with non-improving or worsening outcome. Chronic daily headache and tension-type headache was observed in 6 and 30 students, respectively. This study confirms that clinical course of migraine in schoolchildren is benign. Frequency and intensity of headache can be reduced with reassurance and appropriate guidance. Early recognition and appropriate prevention of migraine attack will decrease the risk of chronic migraine and disease burden.  相似文献

In an expansion of the first Mekong Malaria monograph published in 1999, this second monograph updates the malaria database in the countries comprising the Mekong region of Southeast Asia. The update adds another 3 years' information to cover cumulative data from the 6 Mekong countries (Cambodia, China/Yunnan, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam) for the six-year period 1999-2001. The objective is to generate a more comprehensive regional perspective in what is a global epicenter of drug resistant falciparum malaria, in order to improve malaria control on a regional basis in the context of social and economic change. The further application of geographical information systems (GIS) to the analysis has underscored the overall asymmetry of disease patterns in the region, with increased emphasis on population mobility in disease spread. Of great importance is the continuing expansion of resistance of P. falciparum to antimalarial drugs in common use and the increasing employment of differing drug combinations as a result. The variation in drug policy among the 6 countries still represents a major obstacle to the institution of region-wide restrictions on drug misuse. An important step forward has been the establishment of 36 sentinel sites throughout the 6 countries, with the objective of standardizing the drug monitoring process; while not all sentinel sites are fully operational yet, the initial implementation has already given encouraging results in relation to disease monitoring. Some decreases in malaria mortality have been recorded. The disease patterns delineated by GIS are particularly instructive when focused on inter-country distribution, which is where more local collaborative effort can be made to rationalize resource utilization and policy development. Placing disease data in the context of socio-economic trends within and between countries serves to further identify the needs and the potential for placing emphasis on resource rationalization on a regional basis. Despite the difficulties, the 6-year time frame represented in this monograph gives confidence that the now well established collaboration is becoming a major factor in improving malaria control on a regional basis and hopefully redressing to a substantial degree the key problem of spread of drug resistance regionally and eventually globally.  相似文献

Use of silicone derivative and onion extract had been reported in the prevention of hypertrophic scarring. Our experience showed the preventive use of silicone derivative plus onion extract gel on hypertrophic scars after median sternotomy. In a randomized, double blinded, placebo‐controlled study, 60 patients after median sternotomy incisions were separated into two groups. All patients were treated either with silicone derivative plus onion extract gel (Cybele® scagel) or placebo gel twice daily for a total treatment period of 12 weeks. During each visit, pain and itching scores were graded by the patients and scar characteristics were observed by surgeons using the Vancouver scar scale. Pain and itch score values from patients' who applied silicone derivative plus onion extract gel was less than another group (P < 0·05). Pigmentation was significantly different between two groups (P < 0·05) and the reduction of scores on vascularity, pliability, height in treated group was not superior to the untreated group. No adverse events were reported by any of the patients. A silicone derivative plus onion extract gel is safe and effective for the preventing the hypertrophic scarring after median sternotomy.  相似文献

Electromyography (EMG) in a bio-driven system is used as a control signal, for driving a hand prosthesis or other wearable assistive devices. Processing to get informative drive signals involves three main modules: preprocessing, dimensionality reduction, and classification. This paper proposes a system for classifying a six-channel EMG signal from 14 finger movements. A feature vector of 66 elements was determined from the six-channel EMG signal for each finger movement. Subsequently, various feature extraction techniques and classifiers were tested and evaluated. We compared the performance of six feature extraction techniques, namely principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), uncorrelated linear discriminant analysis (ULDA), orthogonal fuzzy neighborhood discriminant analysis (OFNDA), spectral regression linear discriminant analysis (SRLDA), and spectral regression extreme learning machine (SRELM). In addition, we also evaluated the performance of seven classifiers consisting of support vector machine (SVM), linear classifier (LC), naive Bayes (NB), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), radial basis function extreme learning machine (RBF-ELM), adaptive wavelet extreme learning machine (AW-ELM), and neural network (NN). The results showed that the combination of SRELM as the feature extraction technique and NN as the classifier yielded the best classification accuracy of 99%, which was significantly higher than those from the other combinations tested.
