The uterovaginal junction, part of the reproductive duct, was studied in domestic hens, specifically the special tubular structures known as the sperm host gland. The results were compared between two groups—non-embryonated and embryonated egg producers. Relevant samples were collected, processed to paraffin wax blocks, and sections cut and stained with H&E and PAS stains. Two types of glands were observed in the lamina propria and submucosa. The results from the sperm host glands in chicken’s oviduct suggested that it might have a functional role in oviductal sperm storage in and release of spermatozoa from the sperm host glands of native hens. Sperm storage structures in the form of tubules are observed in the wall of the uterovaginal junction. These tubules are lined by both ciliated and secretory cells and may play a role in the storage of sperm. These features showed better development in the group of egg-laying hens producing embryonated eggs in comparison to the ones producing non-embryonated eggs.  相似文献

The rabbit fish is an economically valuable teleost species which lives in shallow coastal waters amongst aquatic plants. Two species of rabbit fish, Siganus sutore and Siganus javus, have been identified in the sea south of Iran. In this study, in order to investigate the histology of the outer layer of the S. javus eye, the eyes of 12 healthy specimens of S. javus were extracted and histologic sections were prepared. The sections were studied under a light microscope after staining with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's trichrome stains. The outer layer was composed of the cornea cranially and the sclera caudally. The sclera contained an episclera zone and two cartilaginous segments with connective tissue correlation. The cornea included dermal components (stratified cuboidal epithelium, Bowman's membrane, and dermal stroma with occasional flattened cells); the scleral part consisted of two main layers (irregular fibers of connective tissue overlaying the second scleral stroma layer). The fibers of the scleral stroma were the only component present at the posterior part of the cornea. These results reveal that the eye of S. javus does not possess Descemet's membrane or endothelium in the cornea.  相似文献

A progress report on the treatment of 116 patients with adenocarcinoma of the prostate treated by external irradiation is presented. Fifteen, 60, and 41 patients presented initially with Stages A, B, and C, respectively. The majority of the patients received 7,000–7,500 rads during a period of seven to eight weeks, locally to the prostate gland. The five-year actuarial survival were 90, 70, and 40 per cent for Stages A, B, and C, respectively. The five-year survival rates for patients with well and moderately differentiated tumors were significantly better (45 per cent) than for those with poorly differentiated tumors (24 per cent). The five-year survival rate in the patients who received prior or concomitant hormone manipulation was lower (33 per cent) as compared with those receiving radiation therapy alone (43 per cent). All of the above differences were statistically significant (0.01 level). Of the patients failing, distant metastases have developed in 88 per cent suggesting that subclinical distant metastases might have been present prior to initiation of radiotherapy. The local control rate was 82 per cent. The morbidity of this mode of therapy was found to be acceptable. Radical radiation therapy is an effective method for control of carcinoma of the prostate and is potentially curative.  相似文献

Background

Candida albicans may cause vaginal infections in women. The aim of this study was to compare the antifungal effect of Lawsonia inermis with that of clotrimazole on rats.

Methods

A total of 35 female Wistar rats were randomly assigned into 5 groups. Four groups were infected vaginally with C. albicans and one group was not (negative control). The four infected groups received the following treatments: two groups received vaginal creams of 2% or 4% of L. inermis, one group received 1% clotrimazole and one infected group did not receive any treatment (positive control). The hydro-ethanolic henna extract was prepared from the powder of henna leaves using maceration method. Samples were taken for culture from the vaginae of all rats before the treatment, one and two weeks after treatment. An ANOVA test was used to analyze the data.

Results

Before the treatment, the mean colony forming units (CFU) was 213.6 ± 10.08 and 334.42 ± 20.32 in the 2% and 4% henna groups, respectively, 312.7 ± 28.32 in the clotrimazole group, 233.85 ± 8.15 in the positive control group, and zero in the negative control group. The mean CFUs were zero for all groups except for the 2% henna and positive control groups (P < 0.001) one week after the treatment and zero in all groups except for the positive control group two weeks after the treatment (P < 0.001).

Conclusion

L. inermis (henna) in form of vaginal cream could treat C. albicans infections in female rats; however, 4% henna was more effective and had an effect similar to that of clotrimazole.  相似文献

Glioblastoma is one of the most common brain tumors with high invasion and malignancy. Despite extensive research in this area and the use of new and advanced therapies, the survival rate in this disease is very low. In addition, resistance to treatment has also been observed in this disease. One of the reasons for rapid progression and failure in treatment for this disease is the presence of a class of cells with high proliferation and high differentiation, a class called glioblastoma stem-like cells shown as being the source of glioblastoma tumors. It has been reported that several oncogenes are expressed in this disease. One important issue in recognizing the pathogenesis of this disease, and which could improve the treatment process, is the identification of involved oncogenes as well as molecules that affect the reduction of the expression of these oncogenes. Melatonin regulates the biological rhythm and inhibits the proliferation of malignant glioma cells due to antioxidant and anti-apoptotic effects. Melatonin has been considered in biological processes and in signaling pathways involved in the development of glioma. The aim of this review is to investigate the effects of melatonin on signaling pathways and molecules involved in the progression of glioma.  相似文献

Background/Objective

Genital warts are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) and usually have no promising cure. Garlic (Allium sativum) belongs to Liliaceae family, which has a long history of medicinal use. The garlic extract had antiviral and anticarcinogenic effects and can be effective on complete resolution of cutaneous wart. The aim of this clinical study was to compare the garlic extract effect with cryotherapy in the treatment of male genital wart.

Methods

35 male patients aged 20–54 years old with clinically diagnosed genital warts who had more than two warts on both sides of genital region enrolled in the study. Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen (?196 °C temperature) was performed for all right sided warts and 10% garlic extract was applied on all left-sided warts for 2 months.

Results

Regarding response to treatment, at the end of weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 there was no significant difference between two groups (P > 0.05). 69.7% and 78.8% of patients showed complete clearing of the lesions in the garlic and cryotherapy groups respectively (P value, 0.39).

Conclusions

The present study revealed 10% garlic extract after 2 months duration therapy on the male genital warts had the similar effect in compare to cryotherapy.  相似文献

Context: Myrtus communis L. (Myrtaceae), myrtle, is an evergreen shrub with strong antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antihyperglycemic and antioxidant activities. Also, it is used as a sedative-hypnotic plant in Iranian traditional medicine.

Objective: This study evaluates the effect of 80% ethanolic extract of M. communis leaves on sleep and anxiety in mice and rats.

Materials and methods: Male NMRI mice were subjected to open field, righting reflex, grip strength and pentylentetrazole-induced seizure tests. Male Wistar rats were used to evaluate the alterations in rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep. They were treated with 25–400?mg/kg doses of the extract intraperitoneally.

Results: The applied doses (50–200?mg/kg) of M. communis extract increased vertical (ED50?=?40.2?±?6.6?mg/kg) and vertical and horizontal activity (ED50?=?251?±?55?mg/kg), while treatment with 200 and 400?mg/kg attenuated muscle tone significantly compared to vehicle treated animals (p?<?0.001 for all) in a dose-independent manner. Also, a significant hypnotic and not anticonvulsant effect was observed when animals were treated with 200?mg/kg of the extract (p?<?0.01). In this regard, electroencephalography results showed that REM sleep time was decreased (2.4?±?0.5%), while total and NREM sleep times were increased significantly compared to the control group of mice (82.5?±?7.6%).

Discussion and conclusion: The data show the anxiolytic and muscle relaxant effect of the extract without anticonvulsant activities. The anxiolytic, myorelaxant and hypnotic effects without effect on seizure threshold are in line with the effect of a alpha 2 GABA receptor agonist.  相似文献

AIMTo investigate effects of anti-TNF biologic drugs on uveitis severity (comparing visual acuity logMAR levels) in Behçet patients.METHODSThree databases PubMed, Scopus, and the Web of Science were searched for qualified papers focusing on the anti-TNF-α factors treatment in Behçet''s disease (BD)-associated uveitis. Studies that were designed pre and post anti-TNF drug treatment, were selected. After determining the search strategy for this study, the relevant data were extracted.RESULTSThe initial search was performed in the target databases and a total of about 1458 articles were found. Fifteen articles were selected for systematic review and only 12 of them had inclusion criteria for Meta-analysis (with visual acuity data). The mean dose of prednisolone before and after biological treatments was reported in 5 studies (28.56 and 7.56 mg/kg, respectively). Also, the preliminary results indicate a significant reduction in visual acuity logMAR levels (MD=-1.5 IU/L, 95%CI: -2.1, -0.01).CONCLUSIONBiological drugs significantly reduce the dose of prednisolone and affect visual acuity values.  相似文献

Antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory benefit of green tea (Camellia sinensis) in autoimmune disease has been proven in recent studies. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of green tea on disease activity and quality of life in systemic lupus erythematosus patients. A randomized controlled trial on subjects with lupus was conducted, and 68 patients in the age range of 39.1 ± 10.3 years and body mass index of 25.7 ± 5.21 kg/m2 completed the 12‐week study. Patients were randomly divided into two groups of intervention (1000 mg green tea extract, two capsules/day) and control (1000 mg of starch, two capsules/day). Main outcome measure, systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity, was assessed by the systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index at the first and after 3 months of intervention. In addition, patient's quality of life was evaluated by short form of quality‐of‐life questionnaire at baseline and after 3 months. Green tea extract supplementation significantly reduced disease activity in lupus patients (p < 0.004); in addition, it significantly increased the vitality (p < 0.006) and general health (p < 0.01). This study showed that daily consumption of green tea extracts for 12 weeks improves the systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity as well as some aspects of quality of life. Background

FZD7 has a critical role as a surface receptor of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in cancer cells. Suppressing Wnt signaling through blocking FZD7 is shown to decrease cell viability, metastasis and invasion. Bioinformatic methods have been a powerful tool in epitope designing studies. Small size, high affinity and human origin of scFv antibodies have provided unique advantages for these recombinant antibodies.

Methods

Two epitopes from extracellular domain of FZD7 were designed using bioinformatic methods. Specific anti-FZD7 scFvs were selected against these epitopes through panning process. The specificity of the scFvs was assessed by phage ELISA and the ability to bind to FZD7 expressing cell line (MDA-MB-231) was determined by flowcytometry. Antiproliferative and apoptotic effects of the scFvs were evaluated by MTT and Annexin V/PI assays. The effects of selected scFvs on expression level of Surivin, c-Myc and Dvl genes were also evaluated by real-time PCR.

Results

Results demonstrated selection of two specific scFvs (scFv-I and scFv-II) with frequencies of 35 and 20%. Both antibodies bound to the corresponding peptides and cell surface receptors as shown by phage ELISA and flowcytometry, respectively. The scFvs inhibited cell growth of MDA-MB-231 cells significantly as compared to untreated cells. Growth inhibition of 58.6 and 53.1% were detected for scFv-I and scFv-II, respectively. No significant growth inhibition was detected for SKBR-3 negative control cells. The scFvs induced apoptotic effects in the MDA-MB-231 treated cells after 48 h, which were 81.6 and 74.9% for scFv-I and scFv-II, respectively. Downregulation of Surivin, c-Myc and Dvl genes were also shown after 48h treatment of cells with either of scFvs (59.3–93.8%). ScFv-I showed significant higher antiproliferative and apoptotic effects than scFv-II.

Conclusions

Bioinformatic methods could effectively select potential epitopes of FZD7 protein and suggest that epitope designing by bioinformatic methods could contribute to the selection of key antigens for cancer immunotherapy. The selected scFvs, especially scFv-I, with high antiproliferative and apoptotic effects could be considered as effective agents for immunotherapy of cancers expressing FZD7 receptor including triple negative breast cancer.
