Circular stereotactic callosotomy: A preliminary report

Summary The authors propose a new method for performing Stereotactic callosotomy, which they have named circular callosotomy. The operating device is the original Riechert-Mundinger's string electrode, which can be protruded through a side window and by rotating the probe it is possible to cut the commisural pathways to the extent required. The anatomical results of the operation can be checked using MRI scanning.     

An alternative approach to classifying and measuring residential education and group care and treatment programs: Internal totality and community orientation as separate components

Internal totality and community orientation are two pivotal components, difficult to measure, in the literature on residential education (including both residential schools for the elite and group or congregate care and education programs for marginal youth). We propose a two-dimensional model based on historical research and contemporary study to define and differentiate these concepts. Internal totality can be measured through the links and balance between the formal curriculum, extra curriculum, and out of school (nonformal) activities; community orientation through links between the residential and ideological community, the local community, and the wider community. Evaluation of an accelerated protocol for detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing gram-negative bacilli from positive blood cultures

We evaluated a protocol for the accelerated detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in gram-negative bloodstream pathogens. Two hundred eighty-three blood culture bottles were subjected to direct ESBL testing by inoculating samples directly from blood culture bottles onto agar plates containing cefotaxime and ceftazidime disks, with and without clavulanate. Standard ESBL testing in accordance with the NCCLS guidelines after subculturing on agar plates was performed in parallel. Results of the direct ESBL testing were reported 2.3 days sooner and were comparable to those of the standard NCCLS method with sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of 100, 98, 94, and 100%, respectively.     

Different patterns of the L-histidine decarboxylase (HDC) gene expression in mice resistant and susceptible to experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis

Objective and design: In the present study the experimental murine Leishmania major (L. major) infection model was used to investigate the role of histamine biosynthesis in cutaneous leishmaniasis.Subjects, treatment and methods: A novel RNase Protection Assay (RPA) was developed and applied for the assessment of L-histidine decarboxylase (HDC) gene expression in organs of resistant C57BL/6 and susceptible BALB/c mice after infection with L. major.Results: In the acute phase of infection a rapid but transient induction of HDC expression was observed in the infected lymph nodes of both strains correlating both temporally and spatially with parasite spread. The signal was present in the draining popliteal lymph nodes of both hosts, however, only susceptible mice known to be unable to control parasite dissemination showed induction of HDC in their distant periaortic lymph nodes as well. During the chronic phase of infection only the heavily parasitized organs of BALB/c mice showed high HDC gene expression.Conclusions: These data suggest that expression of the histamine-producing enzyme HDC in the decisive acute phase of leishmaniasis is not coupled with development of either appropriate Th1 or inadequate Th2 responses to L. major. We hypothesize however, that during the chronic phase of infection elevated HDC levels, possibly of mast cell origin, are associated with Th2-dominated responses and serious disease development.Received 12 May 2003; returned for revision 3 July 2003; returned for final revision 11 September 2003; accepted by M. Lactosamine type asialooligosaccharide recognition in NK cytotoxicity

Inhibition of pig NK cell activity by asialooligosaccharides (aOS) isolated from human serum glycoproteins was investigated. Train-tennary aOS (aOSIII) of ceruloplasmin was found to be the most potent inhibitor up to the concentration 0.1 micrograms/ml, which is in agreement with its highly specific binding to NK-activity-enriched pig lymphocytes (with a morphology similar to human large granular lymphocytes (LGL]. Only lectins with the specificity to Gal(beta 1----4)GlcNAc or Gal(beta 1----3)GalNAc structures exhibited inhibition of NK cytotoxicity. F(ab)2 fragments of rabbit antibodies against pig spleen membrane lectin cross-reacting with the pig liver membrane lectin completely inhibited NK activity when preincubated with the effectors or present in the incubation mixture during the assay. These data suggest that lectin receptors on cells of pig NK-activity-enriched fraction specific for aOSIII and antigenically related to membrane lectins isolated from pig spleen and liver, are involved in the NK recognition of several xenogeneic targets.     

Preparation trauma in stomatology

In this paper authors deal with the causes of preparation trauma in stomatology. They have studied effects of high temperature on human cells cultured in vitro. Based both on literature data and on their own experience they summarize basic principles of preparation which prevent preparation trauma. They summarize how to eliminate as much as possible factors that damage hard dental tissues and pulp.     

Leishmaniasis in the Jordan Valley: differential attraction of dispersing and breeding site populations of Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae) to manure and water

The response of Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli to traps baited with manure or water was used to compare the behavior of flies near rodent burrows (breeding sites) and dispersing flies in fallow fields. The degree of response in each biotype was defined for each bait by the difference between catches in baited and unbaited traps. Manure bait attracted twice as many flies near the burrows and 2.7 times more flies in the field compared with unbaited traps. In both locations, the manure bait increased the capture of males and nongravid females, whereas gravid females were attracted only near burrows and not in the fields. The catch in the fields with water bait was similar to the unbaited control. However, near burrows, water bait captured more males and gravid females, but not nongravid females. These results demonstrate specific behavioral patterns of the dispersing P. papatasi population.
