Bipolar disorder (manic depressive disease) affects 1% of the United States population. These persons suffer from prolonged episodes of extreme elation and depression. There is a significant incidence of dental pathosis and a need for dental care among these patients. The panoramic radiographs of 507 consecutive patients receiving comprehensive dental treatment were evaluated for the presence of radiolucencies in the mandibular condyles. Nine patients met the study criteria. Five patients had bilateral and four patients had unilateral circumscribed radiolucencies in the anterior aspect of the condyle. Computerized tomography confirmed that these radiolucencies were age-related anatomic variants that were accentuated and distorted during panoramic radiography.  相似文献

Two cases of intracorneal hemorrhage developing as a complication of aphakic contact lens use are reported. Patient 1 had a penetrating keratoplasty to restore vision and therefore the histologic examination could be performed on the corneal button. In patient 2 the contact lens use was discontinued with partial resolution of the intracorneal hemorrhage and the patient then underwent a secondary intraocular lens implantation with good visual results.  相似文献

We describe the dendritic development of neurons in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) projecting to cortical area 18 in the postnatal cat. LGN neurons were identified by retrograde labeling from area 18 with fluorescent latex microspheres and injected in the fixed slice with Lucifer yellow (LY) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to visualize their dendritic arborizations. Both topological (measures of the patterns of dendritic branching and their territorial coverage) and metric parameters (measures of the quantitative parameters describing the size, length, extent and diameter of the dendritic arbors) were measured in three-dimensions for 25 LGN neurons in cats between 1 and 18 postnatal weeks. In addition, dendritic growth was compared to the changing dimensions of the LGNd. At all ages, neurons projecting to area 18 have large somata and radiate dendrites. From 1 to 18 weeks neurons increase in size--both soma area and the length of all dendritic segments double during this period. Intermediate and terminal dendritic segments show comparable growth until 5 weeks. However, only terminal segments continue to grow significantly from 5 until 18 weeks. Dendrites become straighter during development, the angle between daughter branches decreases and dendritic segment diameter increases, with terminal segments showing a greater increase relative to intermediate segments. The density of dendritic appendages increases transiently at 5 weeks and a differential redistribution occurs, so that by 18 weeks dendrites further from the soma have a greater density of appendages than those near the soma. Some dendritic relationships remain invariant during development--intermediate segments are always shorter, thicker and straighter than terminal segments. During these changes however, area 18 projecting neurons maintain a constant number of primary dendrites and have, on average, a constant branching pattern. The relative volume of the LGNd occupied by an area 18 projecting neuron increases 2.4-fold between 1 and 18 weeks as the dendrites grow with the result that the coverage of a given point of the LGNd by dendrites of area 18 projecting nearly doubles from 24 to 45 neurons per unit volume. This increased net dendritic overlap provides a substrate for enhanced numerical synaptic divergence of the Y-cell pathway from a point source in the retina to the visual cortex.  相似文献

A radioactive PCR test was developed that amplified the very virulent Marek's disease virus-1 (vvMDV-1) DNA sequence containing the 132 bp repeats. In apathogenic MDV-1 (CVI 988, Rispens), amplified DNA bands containing multiple copies of 132 bp repeats were identified. In the present study this PCR technique was used to monitor the passage level of vvMDV-1 in chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEF) in which the number of tandem 132 bp repeats was increased. It was found that at passage level 32 of vvMDV-1-B isolate, the 132 bp tandem repeat was already markedly amplified and its pattern resembled that of the MDV-1 (CVI 988, Rispens) vaccine virus DNA. In the vvMDV-1Z strain, amplification of the 132 bp repeat was not detectable at a similar passage level. The PCR test demonstrated that the apathogenic MDV-1 Md11/75c virus developed by extensive in vitro passaging has amplified 132 bp DNA repeats similar to those of the commercial vaccine virus (CVI 988, Rispense). It was also found that the pattern of viral RNA from infected cells detectable by Northern blot hybridization was markedly changed from a 2.4 kb RNA species in cells infected with vvMDV-1 viruses, to four RNA species (ranging from 2.2 to 4.4 kb) in cells infected with passage 32 of MDV-1-B strain, to a very large number of undefined RNA species synthesized in cells infected with attenuated MDV-1 viruses (CVI 988, Rispens and Md 11/75c).  相似文献

The lethal toxin of Bacillus anthracis consists of two components, protective antigen and lethal factor. Protective antigen is cleaved after binding to cell receptors, yielding a receptor-bound fragment that binds lethal factor. Sixty-one monoclonal antibodies to the lethal factor protein have been characterized for specificity, antibody subtype, and ability to neutralize lethal toxin. Three monoclonal antibodies (10G3, 2E7, and 3F6) neutralized lethal toxin in Fisher 344 rats. However, in a macrophage cytolysis assay, monoclonal antibodies 10G3, 2E7, 10G4, 10D4, 13D10, and 1D8, but not 3F6, were found to neutralize lethal toxin. Binding studies showed that five of the monoclonal antibodies that neutralized lethal toxin in the macrophage assay (10G3, 2E7, 10G4, 10D4, and 13D10) did so by inhibiting the binding of lethal factor to the protective antigen fragment bound to cells. Monoclonal antibody 1D8, which was also able to neutralize lethal toxin activity after lethal factor was prebound to cell-bound protective antigen, only partially inhibited binding of lethal factor to protective antigen. Monoclonal antibody 3F6 did not inhibit the binding of lethal factor to protective antigen. A competitive-binding enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed that at least four different antigenic regions on lethal factor were recognized by these seven neutralizing hybridomas. The anomalous behavior of 3F6 suggests that it may induce a conformational change in lethal factor. Differences in neutralizing activity of monoclonal antibodies were related to their relative affinity and epitope specificity and the type of assay.  相似文献
