Ultrasonic immersion echomammography: state of the art and prospects.

This article discusses the state of the art and the prospects of evolution of ultrasonic immersion mammographs. It is shown that ultrasonic immersion mammography for diagnostics of surface organs has a preference over existing ultrasonic scanning devices of contact type. An immersion mammograph has been developed, a characteristic of which is the use of compact ring multielement antenna with the electronic dynamic focusing block.     

Inter-trial neuronal activity in inferior temporal cortex: a putative vehicle to generate long-term visual associations

When monkeys perform a delayed match-to-sample task, some neurons in the anterior inferotemporal cortex show sustained activity following the presentation of specific visual stimuli, typically only those that are shown repeatedly. When sample stimuli are shown in a fixed temporal order, the few images that evoke delay activity in a given neuron are often neighboring stimuli in the sequence, suggesting that this delay activity may be the neural correlate of associative long-term memory. Here we report that stimulus-selective sustained activity is also evident following the presentation of the test stimulus in the same task. We use a neural network model to demonstrate that persistent stimulus-selective activity across the intertrial interval can lead to similar mnemonic representations (distributions of delay activity across the neural population) for neighboring visual stimuli. Thus, inferotemporal cortex may contain neural machinery for generating long-term stimulus-stimulus associations.

Of/Lb collagen promotes chemoinvasion of breast-cancer cells and directs epithelial-cell migration into granulation-tissue of experimental dermal wounds

OF/LB collagen is a recently described once-fetal form of collagen, with laminin-binding properties, composed of three alpha(1)(I)-sized chains, one of which displaying an unusually acidic pI. This collagen appears able to direct the migration of breast cancer cells through Matrigel, and of injury-activated epithelial cells into the underlying granulation stromal tissue. The effect exerted by OF/LB collagen in vitro appears preferentially linked to its acidic chain. The data reported strongly support the hypothesis that the presence and accumulation of OF/LB collagen in cancer may play a fundamental role in the invasive growth.     

Solving the Faddeev-Merkuriev Equations in Total Orbital Momentum Representation via Spline Collocation and Tensor Product Preconditioning

The computational approach for solving the Faddeev-Merkuriev equations in total orbital momentum representation is presented. These equations describe a system of three quantum charged particles and are widely used in bound state and scattering calculations. The approach is based on the spline collocation method and exploits intensively the tensor product form of discretized operators and preconditioner, which leads to a drastic economy in both computer resources and time.
