Translumbar catheter redirection using a tip-deflector technique

A new technique is described for reversing the direction of the catheter tip during translumbar aortography, without the need for partial withdrawal of the catheter from the aortic lumen. The method ensures optimal delivery of contrast medium at the desired level, while avoiding the risk of retroperitoneal bleeding or dislodgement during catheter manipulation.     

Diagnostic value of a psychological test in cases of suspected child abuse

The use of the Bene-Anthony Family Relations Test is described and illustrated by three examples of child abuse. This test should be considered in the investigation of definite or suspected cases of abuse and as part of the preparation of court evidence.     

Addition of cetyl pyridinium chloride to histological demineralizing agents to improve the demonstrability of gram-positive bacteria.

It has previously been shown experimentally using S. faecalis that the relative number of Gram-positive bacteria is reduced by demineralizing agents. To achieve better bacterial preservation after demineralization, cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) and neutral formaldehyde solution (NF) were added, separately and in combination, to formic acid and EDTA. The number of S. faecalis organisms in suspension was determined using a haemocytometer, and the percentage of Gram-positive bacteria was ascertained from smears. Both CPC and NF accomplished better bacterial preservation; when both substances were added together preservation was improved still further. The best results were achieved when CPC and NF were added to EDTA. If these findings could be extrapolated to tissue sections, and if it were intended to demonstrate Gram-positive bacteria, 10 per cent EDTA to which 0.5 per cent CPC and 4 per cent NF had been added would be recommended for demineralization.     

Vascular diaphragmatic hernia in a patient with cirrhosis first case report

We report the case of an adult patient recently diagnosed with cirrhosis. The ultrasound evaluation described a multinodular inhomogeneous liver, requiring a magnetic resonance imaging scan for further characterization. The performed magnetic resonance imaging examination confirmed the diagnosis of cirrhosis associated with portal hypertension and detected a vascular left transdiaphragmatic hernia. Although various types of diaphragmatic hernias have been described - congenital or acquired - to the best of our knowledge, this type of pathology has never been reported.
