Objective. The objective of our study was to establish the refractive indices and the virial coefficients of the volatile anesthetic vapors. These indices and coefficients will allow refractometry to be used by manufacturers to produce accurate calibration, without requiring expensive high-precision calibration gases.Methods. We used a precision refractometer to measure the refractive indices for five volatile anesthetic vapors. We prepared our calibration gases by mixing a gravimetrically calibrated amount of liquid agent with a constant gas flow.Results. The refractive indices for the volatile anesthetic vapors are 1,603.2 for halothane, 1,540.4 for enflurane, 1,563.3 for isoflurance, 1,538.3 for sevoflurane, and 1,211.7 for desflurane. The maximum theoretical error in our measurements, due to all sensors and all uncertainty in our measurement of apparatus and physical constants, is ±0.56% of the reading (±0.70% for desflurane).Conclusions. If refractometry replaced calibration gases in cylinders, as a calibration standard, manufacturers might avoid errors that now occur because calibration gases manufactured by numerous companies seem to differ. We propose that our values serve as an interim database. 相似文献

Current theories of visual consciousness disagree about whether it emerges during early stages of processing in sensory brain regions or later when a widespread frontoparietal network becomes involved. Moreover, disentangling conscious perception from task-related postperceptual processes (e.g., report) and integrating results across different neuroscientific methods remain ongoing challenges. The present study addressed these problems using simultaneous EEG-fMRI and a specific inattentional blindness paradigm with three physically identical phases in female and male human participants. In phase 1, participants performed a distractor task during which line drawings of faces and control stimuli were presented centrally. While some participants spontaneously noticed the faces in phase 1, others remained inattentionally blind. In phase 2, all participants were made aware of the task-irrelevant faces but continued the distractor task. In phase 3, the faces became task-relevant. Bayesian analysis of brain responses demonstrated that conscious face perception was most strongly associated with activation in fusiform gyrus (fMRI) as well as the N170 and visual awareness negativity (EEG). Smaller awareness effects were revealed in the occipital and prefrontal cortex (fMRI). Task-relevant face processing, on the other hand, led to strong, extensive activation of occipitotemporal, frontoparietal, and attentional networks (fMRI). In EEG, it enhanced early negativities and elicited a pronounced P3b component. Overall, we provide evidence that conscious visual perception is linked with early processing in stimulus-specific sensory brain areas but may additionally involve prefrontal cortex. In contrast, the strong activation of widespread brain networks and the P3b are more likely associated with task-related processes.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT How does our brain generate visual consciousness—the subjective experience of what it is like to see, for example, a face? To date, it is hotly debated whether it emerges early in sensory brain regions or later when a widespread frontoparietal network is activated. Here, we use simultaneous fMRI and EEG for high spatial and temporal resolution and demonstrate that conscious face perception is predominantly linked to early and occipitotemporal processes, but also prefrontal activity. Task-related processes (e.g., decision-making), on the other hand, elicit brain-wide activations including late and strong frontoparietal activity. These findings challenge numerous previous studies and highlight the importance of investigating the neural correlates of consciousness in the absence of task relevance. 相似文献

BackgroundAfter the ‘first wave’ in spring 2020, opinions regarding the threat and measures against COVID-19 seemed to vary among German general practitioners (GPs).ObjectivesTo systematically investigate opinions and to identify subgroups of GPs sharing similar views.MethodsA questionnaire was sent to all 210 practices accredited for undergraduate teaching of family medicine at the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Munich. Questions addressed personal opinions regarding risks, dilemmas, restrictions and their relaxation associated with COVID-19, and personal fears, symptoms of depression and anxiety. Patterns of strong opinions (‘archetypes’) were identified using archetypal analysis, a statistical method seeking extremal points in the multidimensional data.ResultsOne hundred and sixty-one GPs sent back a questionnaire (response rate 77%); 143 (68%) with complete data for all 38 relevant variables could be included in the analysis. We identified four archetypes with subgroups of GPs tending in the direction of these archetypes: a small group of ‘Sceptics’ (n = 12/8%) considering threats of COVID-19 as overrated and measures taken as exaggerated; ‘Hardliners’ (n = 34/24%) considering threats high and supporting strong measures; ‘Balancers’ (n = 77/54%) who also rated the threats high but were more critical about potentially impairing the quality of life of elderly people and children; and ‘Anxious’ GPs (n = 20/14%) tending to report more fear, depressive and anxiety symptoms.ConclusionAmong the participants in this survey, opinions regarding the threat and the measures taken against COVID-19 during the ‘first wave’ in Germany in spring 2020 varied greatly. 相似文献

Introduction Interleukin-10 (IL-10) treatment has been shown to have beneficial effects on the immune function after hemorrhagic shock
and to improve survival after subsequent sepsis in young male mice, but not in young females. Although it was demonstrated
that the immune function under these conditions is reversed with age, it remains unclear whether the observed gender-related
effect of IL-10 treatment continues to exist in aged mice.
Materials and methods Aged male and female CBA/J mice (18–19 months) were subjected to hemorrhage (35 ± 5 mmHg for 90 min) or sham operation. At
resuscitation, each received either 10-μg recombinant murine (rm)IL-10 or placebo i.p. At 48 h after resuscitation, either
the mice were killed and the plasma, splenic macrophages (sMϕ), and splenocytes were harvested or polymicrobial sepsis was
induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). After CLP, either survival over 10 days was determined or, 4 h after CLP, tissues
were again harvested and cytokine-released in vitro were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
Results Early IL-10 treatment restored depressed proinflammatory immune response (TNF-α, IL-1β) and Th1 response of splenocytes in
aged females after hemorrhage, whereas having no effects or having suppressive effects in aged males. Subsequent sepsis combined
with placebo treatment led to a significant suppression of proinflammatory cytokine release of sMϕ and a significant increase
of Th2 response in both males and females associated with high mortality (80–100%, respectively) after CLP. These effects
were not influenced by early rmIL-10 treatment.
Conclusion After hemorrhage, early rmIL-10 treatment restored immune function in aged females, but not in males. However, in contrast
to young mice, rmIL-10 treatment had no effect on survival and immune function after CLP in aged mice.
