Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the important cataract risk factors. The present studies examined the hypothesis that this effect is due to the UV penetration through the cornea and subsequent induction of a photochemical generation of reactive species of oxygen (ROS) in the aqueous and lens. The hypothesis was ascertained by rat lens organ culture studies conducted under UV (365 nm), with media containing micromolar levels of riboflavin, with and without pyruvate, the latter acting as an ROS scavenger. The implication of ROS in the UV-induced damage was confirmed by measurements of peroxide generation. Damage to the lens was assessed physiologically by measuring the decrease in its active transport of rubidium ions. Biochemically, it was assessed by measuring the lowering of adenosine triphosphate and glutathione. The incorporation of pyruvate in the medium protected the lens against these deleterious effects. That the beneficial effect of pyruvate is attributable to its ROS-scavenging property was proven by the peroxide depletion in its presence, commensurate with its own utilization in parallel. A protective effect of this keto acid against UV-induced tissue damage has been shown for the first time, suggesting its clinical usefulness against UV irradiation-induced pathologies. Hence, further studies on the possible protective effects of such alpha-keto acids against UV damage are in progress.  相似文献

As clinical manifestations of systemic vasculitides share many common features with other conditions, the rate of diagnostic errors and delayed diagnoses is high. Hence we performed an analysis of the available data regarding misdiagnosis of vasculitis as lung cancer and vice versa, as well as coexistence of vasculitis and lung cancer. The present case-based review highlights the diagnostic challenges encountered when granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) mimics lung cancer. The importance of a multidisciplinary team approach to patients with pulmonary involvement and multisystem manifestations is essential for appropriate planning of further diagnostic steps and for minimizing the delay in correct diagnosis and treatment. In the present case, although computed tomography raised suspicion for lung cancer, further biopsies and laboratory screening for systemic vasculitides rejected malignancy and confirmed the diagnosis of GPA.  相似文献

Early adulthood is a critical life period associated with increased suicide risk. The present study used a sample of students from ten Ukrainian public universities (N = 1005). Participants were 17 to 24 years of age (M = 19.19, SD = 1.99). The prevalence of lifetime suicidal ideation was 26.13% and 5.45% of participants reported a lifetime suicide attempt. Participants were more likely to report higher lifetime suicidal ideation if they had higher rates of alcohol and marijuana use, have met a clinical cutoff point for depression and were older, females, and not affiliated with any religion. The lifetime suicide attempt was associated with clinical levels of depression, increased marijuana use, and non-religious affiliation. These results suggest that mental health, alcohol and cannabis use can increase the risk of suicidality while religious affiliation might be an important protective mechanism for Ukrainian young adults at risk for suicidal behaviors.

The novel bis-chelating carbacylamidophosphate type ligand, tetramethyl[pyridine-2,6-diyldi(iminocarbonyl)]diamidophosphate (H2L), and its sodium salt, NaHL, have been synthesized and their structural properties have been investigated. Coordination compounds of lanthanides [Ln(HL)2NO3]·i-PrOH (Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+) were obtained for the first time, isolated in the individual state and characterized by means of IR and NMR spectroscopies, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), potentiometric titration, and elemental, thermal gravimetric and X-ray diffraction analyses. It was shown that H2L behaves like a scorpionate type ligand and in a mono-deprotonated form coordinates in a tridentate manner via the oxygen atoms of phosphoryl and carbonyl groups with formation of a mononuclear metal complex. The protonation constants of H2L and stability constants of Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes have been determined. According to the results of X-ray diffraction analysis the H2L and [Ln(HL)2NO3]·i-PrOH molecules have monomeric structure but NaHL is a dimer. The Hirshfeld surface and fingerprint plots of the compounds have been used to analyze various hydrogen bonds and intermolecular interactions displayed in the crystal structure.

Herein, we report on a new hybrid compound (NH4){[Cu(dien)(H2O)2]2[β-VMo7O26]}·1.5H2O (1), where dien = diethylenetriamine, containing an extremely rare mixed-metal pseudo-octamolybdate cluster. An ex situ EPR spectroscopy provided insights into the formation of paramagnetic species in reaction mixture and in solution of 1. The magneto-structural correlations revealed weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the [Cu(dien)]2+ cations transmitted by intermolecular pathways. The cyclic voltammetry showed the one-electron process associated with the Cu3+/Cu2+ oxidation followed by the multi-electron catalytic wave due to water oxidation with a faradaic yield of 86%. The title compound was thus employed in homogeneous water oxidation catalysis using tris(bipyridine)ruthenium photosensitizer. At pH 8.0, efficiency of the catalytic system attained 0.19 turnovers per second supported by the relatively mild water oxidation overpotential of 0.54 V.

A new hybrid compound (NH4){[Cu(dien)(H2O)2]2[β-VMo7O26]}·1.5H2O was employed in homogeneous water oxidation catalysis. At pH 8.0, its efficiency attains 0.19 turnovers per second, supported by the relatively mild water oxidation overpotential of 0.54 V.  相似文献

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a multifactorial disease characterized by diffuse motor neuron degeneration, has proven to be a difficult target for stem cell therapy. The primary aim of this study was to determine the long-term effects of intravenous mononuclear human umbilical cord blood cells on disease progression in a well-defined mouse model of ALS. In addition, we rigorously examined the distribution of transplanted cells inside and outside the central nervous system (CNS), migration of transplanted cells to degenerating areas in the brain and spinal cord, and their immunophenotype. Human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) cells (10(6)) were delivered intravenously into presymptomatic G93A mice. The major findings in our study were that cord blood transfusion into the systemic circulation of G93A mice delayed disease progression at least 2-3 weeks and increased lifespan of diseased mice. In addition, transplanted cells survived 10-12 weeks after infusion while they entered regions of motor neuron degeneration in the brain and spinal cord. There, the cells migrated into the parenchyma of the brain and spinal cord and expressed neural markers [Nestin, III Beta-Tubulin (TuJ1), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)]. Infused cord blood cells were also widely distributed in peripheral organs, mainly the spleen. Transplanted cells also were recovered in the peripheral circulation, possibly providing an additional cell supply. Our results indicate that cord blood may have therapeutic potential in this noninvasive cell-based treatment of ALS by providing cell replacement and protection of motor neurons. Replacement of damaged neurons by progeny of cord blood stem cells is probably not the only mechanism by which hUCB exert their effect, since low numbers of cells expressed neural antigens. Most likely, cord blood efficacy is partially due to neuroprotection by modulation of the autoimmune process.  相似文献
