A healthy eating environment in the school setting is crucial to nurture the healthy eating pattern for youth. Thus, it helps to combat the obesity issue. However, the impact of healthy school environment on healthy eating habits among Asian adolescents is scarce and less clear. This clustered randomised-control study has two objectives. The first objective was to evaluate the changes in adolescents’ dietary intake after the interventions for all arms (control; healthy cooking training only; subsidization with healthy cooking training). The second objective was to compare the effect of subsidization with healthy cooking training and healthy cooking training only with the control arm on adolescents’ dietary intakes. This study consisted of 340 secondary school students aged 14 years in rural and urban Malaysia. A total of two arms of intervention and one arm of control were included. Intervention one focused on healthy cooking preparation for the canteen and convenience shop operators. Intervention two included subsidization for fruits and vegetables with a healthy cooking preparation training for the canteen and suggestions on providing healthy options to the convenience shop operators. The outcome measured was changes to dietary intake. It was measured using a three-day dietary history pre- and post-intervention. A paired-t test was used to evaluate the outcome of intervention programmes on dietary changes for all arms (control, intervention one and two). An ANCOVA test was used to investigate the effect of providing subsidization and healthy cooking preparation training to the canteen and convenience shop operators on adolescents’ dietary intakes as compared to the control arm. Overall, the reduction in energy and carbohydrates for all arms were observed. Interestingly, fat intake was significantly increased after the four-week intervention programme under healthy cooking intervention but not in the food subsidization group. When comparing between control, healthy cooking training only and subsidization with the healthy cooking training arm, there was no significant changes between arms. A robust intervention to include subsidization of healthy foods for intervention programmes at schools in a larger scale study is needed to confirm this finding.  相似文献

Delayed treatment of stroke with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (r‐tPA) induces overexpression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP‐9) which leads to breakdown of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and causes more injuries to the brain parenchyma. In this study, the effect of ascorbic acid (AA), an antioxidant agent, on the delayed administration of r‐tPA in a rat model of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was investigated. Forty male rats were randomly divided into four groups: untreated control rats (ischaemic animals), AA‐treated (500 mg/kg; 5 hr after stroke) rats, r‐tPA‐treated (5 hr after stroke 1 mg/kg) rats and rats treated with the combination of AA and r‐tPA. Middle cerebral artery occlusion was induced by occluding the right middle cerebral artery (MCA). Infarct size, BBB, brain oedema and the levels of MMP‐9 were measured at the end of study. Neurological deficits were evaluated at 24 and 48 hr after stroke. Compared to the control or r‐tPA‐treated animals, AA alone (p < 0.001) or in combination with r‐tPA (p < 0.05) significantly decreased infarct volume. Ascorbic acid alone or r‐tPA + AA significantly reduced BBB permeability (p < 0.05), levels of MMP‐9 (p < 0.05 versus control; p < 0.01 versus r‐tPA) and brain oedema (p < 0.001) when compared to either the control or the r‐tPA‐treated animals. Latency to the removal of sticky labels from the forepaw was also significantly decreased after the administration of AA + r‐tPA (p < 0.05) at 24 or 48 hr after stroke. Based on our data, acute treatment with AA may be considered as a useful candidate to reduce the side effects of delayed application of r‐tPA in stroke therapy.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to treat different pathologic types of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) using photodynamic therapy (PDT). STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty lesions in six patients underwent PDT. The photosensitizer used was Photoheme, a hematoporphyrin derivative IX. It was injected intravenously at the dose of 2-3.25 mg/kg. After 24 hours, the lesions were illuminated by laser light (lambda = 632 nm, light exposure dose = 100-200 J/cm2). Lesions were evaluated pre and post-operatively and at follow-up sessions (of up to 6 months). RESULTS: After a single session of PDT, the average response rate in different histopathologic kinds of basal cell carcinoma (e.g., ulcerative, superficial, nodular, and pigmented forms) were 100%, 62%, 90%, and 14%, respectively. In patients who responded completely, the cosmetic results were excellent and there were no recurrence at 6th month of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Although PDT seems to be an effective treatment modality for superficial, ulcerative, and nodular BCCs, it is not recommended for pigmented lesions.  相似文献

Background  

Bilateral extradural hematomas have only rarely been reported in the literature. Even rarer are cases where the hematomas develop sequentially, one after removal of the other. Among 187 cases of operated epidural hematomas during past 4 years in our hospital, we found one case of sequentially developed bilateral epidural hematoma.  相似文献

Background Human Herpesvirus type 8 (HHV‐8) is a new member of the herpes virus family, first found in the tissue of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)‐related Kaposi’s sarcoma. Environmental factors including viral infection may play a role in the onset and/or development of pemphigus. Some studies based on polymerase chain reaction findings suggest an association between HHV‐8 and pemphigus. The aim of this study is investigation of the association of pemphigus with HHV‐8 and the relationship between inflammatory and acantholytic cells with HHV‐8 infection. Methods Tissue‐extracted DNA from 41 paraffin‐embedded skin tissues from patients first presenting with pemphigus was tested using nested PCR for the presence of HHV‐8. A total of 37 cases had pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and 4 patients had pemphigus foliaceus (PF). For our control group, normal skin of 21 cosmetic surgery patients were included. Furthermore, microscopic slides with H&E staining were evaluated for the number of inflammatory and acantholytic cells per microscopic field. Results Skin lesions from 13 of 37 patients (35.1%) with PV and 2 of 4 cases (50%) with PF were positive for HHV‐8 DNA. All specimens in our control group were negative for this virus. Conclusion HHV‐8 infection might be a contributing factor in the initiation or development of pemphigus.  相似文献

Background: Cystic fibrosis is a monogenic recessive disorder found predominantly in Caucasian population. This disease arises from mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. In this study we consider poly T polymorphism c.1210-12T[5], c.1210-12T[7], c.1210-12T[9] (T5, T7, T9) in the intron 8 of CFTR gene in normal individuals and cystic fibrosis patients in the north of Iran. Material and methods: 40 CF patients and 40 normal individuals were screened for poly T polymorphism in intron 8 of CFTR gene using Reverse Dot Blot method which was also used to detect p.Phe508del among CF patients. Results: T7 allele is the most prevalent in both normal and CF patients. Its abundance is approximately 75%. T9 and T5 represent approximately 20% and 5% of alleles respectively. T7/ T7 genotype is the most present in both normal and CF patients with 72.5% and 60% prevalence respectively. p.Phe508del was present in 13 CFTR alleles belonging to 7 patients with either homozygote T9/ T9, T7/ T7 or compound heterozygote T7/ T9 genotypes. Conclusion: Contrary to the Caucasians, T7 allele is more frequent in Northern Iranian CF patients. The presence of p.Phe508del and T7 allele in the same framework is reported for the first time in this part of the world. Further investigations of other populations will help to understand whether p.Phe508del arose by selection pressure in this part of the world or was imported from European countries. The abundance of T5, T7, T9 alleles indicates that this polymorphism can be used as one of the informative markers for detection of normal and mutant alleles in prenatal diagnosis or carrier assessment in families with previous history of the disease in regions with high degree of CFTR mutation heterogeneity.  相似文献
