Intramedullary neurenteric cysts (NEC) without associated malformations are extremely rare and, to our knowledge, have never been reported in association with calcification. We report a unique imaging presentation as a partially calcified mass of an isolated intramedullary neuroenteric cyst of the lower thoracic spinal cord with pathologic correlation. The literature for isolated forms of intramedullary NEC since the advent of magnetic resonance imaging is also reviewed.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to better understand how analytical permeability models based on scaffold architecture can facilitate a non-invasive technique to real time monitoring of pressure drop in bioreactors. In particular, we evaluated the permeability equations for electrospun and freeze dried scaffolds via pressure drop comparison in an axial-flow bioreactor using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) and experimentation. The polycaprolactone–cellulose acetate fibers obtained by co-axial electrospinning technique and Chitosan–Gelatin scaffolds prepared using freeze-drying techniques were utilized. Initially, the structural properties (fiber size, pore size and porosity) and mechanical properties (elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio) of scaffolds in phosphate buffered saline at 37 °C were evaluated. The CFD simulations were performed by coupling fluid flow, described by Brinkman equation, with structural mechanics using a moving mesh. The experimentally obtained pressure drop values for both 1 mm thick and 2 mm thick scaffolds agreed with simulation results. To evaluate the effect of permeability and elastic modulus on pressure drop, CFD predictions were extended to a broad range of permeabilities spanning synthetic scaffolds and tissues, elastic moduli, and Poisson’s ratio. Results indicated an increase in pressure drop with increase in permeability. Scaffolds with higher elastic modulus performed better and the effect of Poisson’s ratio was insignificant. Flow induced deformation was negligible in axial-flow bioreactor. In summary, scaffold permeabilities can be calculated using scaffold microarchitecture and can be used in non-invasive monitoring of tissue regeneration.  相似文献

Although impaction of a permanent tooth is rarely diagnosed during the mixed dentition period, an impacted central incisor is usually diagnosed accurately when there is delay in the eruption of tooth. In this article, the impacted incisor was moved into it's proper position with surgical exposure and orthodontic traction, after which it showed good stability.  相似文献

Crataeva religiosa Hook and Forst belonging to family Capparidaceae (Cappaceae) was selected based on its ethnopharmacological uses like diuretic, laxative, lithonotriptic, antirheumatic, antiperiodic, bitter tonic, rubifacient and counterirritant and was investigated to evaluate in vitro antimycotic potential of petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanolic and aqueous extracts against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Candida krusei, Cryptococcus marinus and Aspergillus niger by disc diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of C. religiosa extracts were found in the range of 0.062 - 0.5 mg/disc. The ethanolic extract significantly inhibits the growth of selected fungal pathogens, whereas aqueous extract do not show zone of inhibition against the tested Candida species. The results indicate the possible therapeutic uses of the plant as a potent antifungal agent.  相似文献

The nephroprotective activity of the ethanolic extract of Bauhinia variegata (Linn.) whole stem against cisplatin-induced nephropathy was investigated by an in vivo method in rats. Acute nephrotoxicity was induced by i.p. injection of cisplatin (7 mg/kg of body weight (b.w.)). Administration of ethanol extract at dose levels of 400 and 200 mg/kg (b.w.) to cisplatin-intoxicated rats for 14 days attenuated the biochemical and histological signs of nephrotoxicity of cisplatin in a dose-dependent fashion. Ethanol extract at 400 mg/kg decreased the serum level of creatinine (0.65 ± 0.09; P<0.001) and urea (32.86 ± 5.88; P<0.001) associated with a significant increase in body weight (7.16 ± 1.10; P<0.001) and urine volume output (11.95 ± 0.79; P<0.05) as compared to the toxic control group. The ethanol extract of B. variegata at 400 mg/kg (b.w.) exhibited significant and comparable nephroprotective potential to that of the standard polyherbal drug cystone. The statistically (one-way-ANOVA followed by Tukey-Kramer multiple comparison) processed results suggested the protective action of B. variegate whole stem against cisplatin-induced nephropathy.  相似文献

Context: In West Nile virus (WNV) encephalitis, polio-like illness has been reported but there is no report on acute transverse myelopathy.

Design, Setting and Participants: We report a patient with WNV myelopathy admitted in a tertiary care teaching hospital, India along with review of the literature.

Findings: A 34 year-old lady presented with fever, headache, diarrhea, seizure, bulbar weakness and quadriplegia for 20 days. Her encephalopathy, bulbar and upper limb weakness improved within few days but flaccid areflexic paraplegia persisted till 6 months with a horizontal sensory level at D3. Electromyography was suggestive of anterior horn cell involvement and somatosensory evoked potential was unrecordable. MRI revealed middle cerebellar peduncle, pons and whole of spinal cord involvement. We could get 11 articles with spinal cord involvement in WNV infection in the medical literature through PubMed search. Their clinical, MRI and electro-diagnostic findings and outcome have been discussed.

Conclusion/Clinical Relevance: Acute transverse myelitis may occur in WNV encephalitis and EMG may be helpful in confirming anterior horn cell involvement and predicting outcome.  相似文献

Constitutive activation of STAT3 has been shown in several human cancers and transformed cell lines including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the present report, we investigated whether diosgenin, a steroidal saponin isolated from fenugreek can modulate the STAT3 signaling pathway. We found that diosgenin inhibited both constitutive and inducible activation of STAT3 with no effect on STAT5. The activation of c-Src, JAK1 and JAK2 implicated in STAT3 activation, were also suppressed by this saponin. Pervanadate reversed the diosgenin-induced downregulation of STAT3, suggesting the involvement of a protein tyrosine phosphatase. Indeed, we found that diosgenin can induce the expression of Src homology 2 phosphatase 2 (SH-PTP2) that correlated with downregulation of constitutive STAT3 activation. Diosgenin also downregulated the expression of various STAT3-regulated gene products, inhibited proliferation and potentiated the apoptotic effects of paclitaxel and doxorubicin. Overall, these results suggest that diosgenin is a novel blocker of the STAT3 activation pathway, with a potential role in the treatment of HCC and other cancers.  相似文献
