OBJECTIVE: Hypertension is an important problem of the public health. Insufficient education of the people along with insufficient physical examination also plays a role in the poor success of the diagnosis and treatment of the hypertension. We investigated whether the skinfold thickness has an importance in the prediction of blood pressure or not. METHODS: In Aydin City area 110 women and 100 men selected by randomized sampling method were included into our study. Body mass index, blood pressure and skinfold thickness were measured according to the international guidelines. RESULTS: There was a moderate correlation between the skinfold and body mass index (r= 0.494, p=0.000) and there was a mild correlation between the body mass index and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (r=0.225, p=0.000 and r=0.300, p=0.000, respectively). There was no correlation between the skinfold thickness and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (r=0.058, p=0.400 and r=0.090, p=0.194, respectively). CONCLUSION: It is concluded that body mass index, not skinfold thickness, can be used for the prediction of the blood pressure. Some other factors independent from the body mass index might be the determinants of the skinfold thickness.  相似文献

AIM: The objective of this study is to analyze the complication rates after the completion thyroidectomy and compare them with primary total thyroidectomy. METHODS: The outcomes of patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma who were operated over a period of eight years were evaluated. One hundred and forty-one patients underwent completion thyroidectomy and 92 patients had primary surgery. RESULTS: The two groups were comparable in respect of clinical variables. Residual tumor was found in 66 of 141 patients (46.8%) in completion thyroidectomy group. The rate of the two most important complications, permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and permanent hypoparathyroidism were 3.5 and 4.2%, in completion thyroidectomy group, and 3.3 and 4.3%, in primary total thyroidectomy group. The complication rates were not significantly different between groups. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, completion thyroidectomy can be done safely in a specialized center with acceptable morbidity.  相似文献

A total of 5,366 pregnant Turkish women were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and 225 (4.2%) of them were found to be positive. Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) was detected in 6.2% of HBsAg-positive pregnant women. The overall prevalence of HBsAg and antibody to HBsAg (anti-HBs) among the spouses, previous children, mothers and first degree relatives of the HBsAg-positive pregnant women was 56%, 49%, 79% and 74% respectively. The prevalence of HBsAg is thus high in pregnant Turkish women with familial clustering of hepatitis B virus infection.  相似文献

Summary The basiparallel cut is a nearly horizontal slice of the posterior fossa used in air study and the structures are observed on a plane parallel to the clivus. Total shrinkage of the cerebellum, with or without fourth ventricle dilatation, was found in cases of olivopontocerebellar atrophy, some intoxications, and a few senile subjects. Some atrophy of paleocerebellar portions was seen in Holmes-type degeneration. Another pattern was symmetric shrinkage of neocerebellar lobules and relatively specific for the cases of multiple system atrophy such as progressive supranuclear palsy, striatonigral degeneration, Marie's ataxia, etc. Loss of the superior cerebellar peduncle was clearly demonstrated in this view.  相似文献

The aim of this prospective study was to determine the diagnostic value of Tc-99m MDP scintimammography (SMG) for the detection of breast cancer in patients with breast masses and to compare the results with Tc-99m MIBI scintimammography. Twenty patients, categorized as suspicious, positive or benign for breast cancer according to the mammographic findings were included in the study. Dual phase Tc-99m MIBI and Tc-99m MDP SMG were performed in the prone lateral position within 5 days of each other. Although early and late Tc-99m MIBI SMG showed equal (90.4%) sensitivity, the specificity of late Tc-99m MIBI (87.5%) was found superior to early (62.5%) imaging. The overall sensitivity and specificity of early Tc-99m MDP SMG were 71.4% and 62.5%, respectively. Although late Tc-99m MDP imaging showed 100% specificity, its sensitivity was only 23.8%. In the patients with palpable masses, both early Tc-99m MDP and Tc-99m MIBI showed equal sensitivity (100%), but the sensitivity of early Tc-99m MIBI (37.5%) was found slightly higher than Tc-99m MDP (25.0%) for nonpalpable breast lesions. The sensitivity of Tc-99m MIBI and Tc-99m MDP SMG in detecting metastatic axillary involvement was 66.6% and 50%, respectively. High sensitivity and specificity together with its low cost, easy availability and the possibility of detecting bone metastases seems to make Tc-99m MDP a contributive agent in the evaluation of breast lesions as an alternative to Tc-99m MIBI.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that poor sleep quality is significantly associated with obesity. The aim of this study is to examine the association of sleep quality with obesity and specific anthropometric measurements. A total of 105 women aged 20–55 years with no chronic diseases participated in this study. They filled out the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), their anthropometric measurements were taken, and their dietary data were collected with a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). There was no significant relationship between sleep quality and BMI, waist circumference, triceps skinfold thicknesses, body fat ratio (%), and body fat mass (p > .05), but high bread consumption was significantly associated with poor sleep quality (p < .05). The women with poor sleep quality consumed significantly more bread, but not other foods, than the women with good sleep quality. Sleep quality can thus be related to eating habits.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyse the effects of KT on trunk strength with respect to different angular speeds when applied to the trunks of healthy women. Forty healthy female participants were randomly distributed into two groups: the placebo group (PG) in which placebo KT was applied and the experimental group (EG). Participants’ trunk concentric flexion and extension muscle strength were measured using an isokinetic dynamometer in two different angular speeds (60°/s ? 180°/s). In both PG and EG groups, there was no significant difference measured immediately after taping at the two angular speed values. In the measurements taken 48 h later, as regards PG trunk flexion, extension muscle strength increased significantly (p = 0.0001) at 60°/sc. angular speed while, for the EG only, the strength of trunk extension muscle increased significantly (p = 0.002). It was observed, that to ensure an increase in strength, waiting for a certain length of time was required. Lower angular speeds and short-term applied KT improved the strength of the trunk extension muscle.  相似文献

PURPOSENonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can progress to liver cirrhosis and is predicted to become the most frequent indication for liver transplantation in the near future. Noninvasive assessment of NAFLD is important for diagnosis and patient management. This study aims to prospectively determine the liver stiffness and T1 and T2 values in patients with NAFLD and to compare the diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and mapping techniques in relation to the proton density fat fraction (PDFF).METHODSEighty-three patients with NAFLD and 26 participants with normal livers were imaged with a 1.5 T scanner. PDFF measurements obtained from the multiecho Dixon technique were used to quantify the liver fat. MRE, native T1 mapping (modified Look-Locker inversion recovery [MOLLI] schemes 5(3)3, 3(3)3(3)5, and 3(2)3(2)5 and the B1-corrected variable flip angle [VFA] method), and T2 mapping values were correlated with PDFF. The diagnostic performance of MRE and the mapping techniques were analyzed and compared.RESULTST1 values measured with the MOLLI schemes and the B1-corrected VFA (p < 0.001), and the stiffness values from MRE (p = 0.047) were significantly higher in the NAFLD group. No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of T2 values (p = 0.127). In differentiation of the NAFLD and control groups, the B1-corrected VFA technique had slightly higher accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) than the MOLLI schemes. In the NAFLD group, there was a good correlation between the PDFF, MOLLI 3(3)3(3)5 and 3(2)3(2)5, and VFA T1 measurements (r=0.732; r=0.735; r=0.716, p < 0.001, respectively).CONCLUSIONLiver T1 mapping techniques have the potential to distinguish steatotic from nonsteatotic livers, and T1 values seem to have a strong correlation with the liver fat content.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease, with an estimated worldwide prevalence of around 25% (1). It may range from simple steatosis, which is considered a benign condition, to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. NAFLD is also known to be associated with metabolic syndrome, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus (24).The gold standard method for diagnosing NAFLD and distinguishing its different patterns is a liver biopsy which has considerable limitations, including sampling errors, its invasive nature and associated complication risks, small sample size, and inter- and intraobserver variability (5, 6). These drawbacks constrain its utility for clinical monitoring and make it unsuitable as a screening method. Therefore, there is an urgent clinical need for an accurate noninvasive approach in the assessment of NAFLD. Accordingly, both the European Association for the Study of the Liver and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease propose magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a noninvasive diagnostic tool for NAFLD (7, 8). Proton density fat fraction (PDFF)-based MRI and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) techniques are considered the most accurate noninvasive methods for the quantification of liver fat (912). The PDFF is accepted as a standardized biomarker of hepatic steatosis. Studies suggest that this biomarker is equivalent to the hepatic “signal fat fraction” (FF) after correcting all the confounding factors (13). However, PDFF measurement is not suitable for the assessment of any inflammation or fibrosis in NAFLD (13). On the other hand, recent studies have shown that other quantitative MRI techniques such as magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and T1–T2 mapping can be useful in detecting hepatic inflammatory and fibrotic changes (14, 1521). Thus, the application of a multiparametric MRI protocol might be helpful in liver tissue characterization and thereby in the risk stratification and therapeutic management of patients with NAFLD.In this prospective study, we aimed to determine liver stiffness and T1 and T2 values in patients with NAFLD and nonsteatotic subjects and compare the diagnostic performance of MRE and mapping techniques in relation to the FF.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the various features of infectious disease (ID) consultations and the usage of antibiotics in a Turkish university hospital. METHODS: A total of 395 consultation requests were recorded during a three-year period. RESULTS: The departments most frequently requesting the consultation services of the ID department were Orthopedics (29.6%), Neurology (18.5%), Cardiology (11.8%) and Internal Medicine (10.4%). The main reasons were for diagnosis of unexplained fever (42.3%) and for antibiotic modification according to culture results (18%). Diagnoses made by the ID consultant were pneumonia (16.7%), urinary tract infections (9.3%), bone and joint prosthesis infections (9.1%) and in 15.7% of the investigated patients, no infectious focus was determined. It was recognized that the use of antibiotics had already been initiated in the great majority of patients (67.1%) before the consultation request. While the current therapy was changed in 57.4% of these patients, antibiotics were not necessary for 9.8%. CONCLUSIONS: Since the most common diagnoses were respiratory and urinary tract or bone and joint prosthesis infections, the ID specialists should have detailed knowledge of these problems. Usage of antibiotics without ID consultation was prevalent, therefore a continuous educational program is a necessity for healthcare workers in the hospital.  相似文献
