Modified synthesis of 11-[C]-clozapine

The reported synthetic pathway of 8-chloro-11-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-11-[¹⁴C]-5H-dibenzo[b,e][1,4]diazapine (clozapine) was modified in several steps. The synthetic pathway was shortened by 60% and the total yield was increased from 6% to 23%.     

COVID‐19‐associated mucormycosis involving the maxilla

It is important to increase the awareness and knowledge of head and neck surgeons about the recent surge of craniofacial mucormycosis in COVID‐19 patients because early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to improve the outcomes. Here, we describe clinical features, treatment protocols, and outcomes of treatment in eight patients with COVID‐19‐associated mucormycosis in the maxilla. Consistent with the findings of previous studies, our experience in the management of these eight patients shows that early administration of amphotericin B and prompt aggressive surgery are essential for optimal control of the disease.     

Synthesis of a carbon-14 analogue of 8-chloro-11-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-11-[14C]-dibenz[b,f][1,4]oxazepine.

8-Chloro-11-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-dibenz[b,f][1,4]oxazepine labelled with carbon-14 in 11-position was prepared from 2-hydroxy benzonitrile-[cyano-14C].     

From the Cover: Polysaccharide hydrogels with tunable stiffness and provasculogenic properties via α-helix to β-sheet switch in secondary structure

Mechanical aspects of the cellular environment can influence cell function, and in this context hydrogels can serve as an instructive matrix. Here we report that physicochemical properties of hydrogels derived from polysaccharides (agarose, κ-carrageenan) having an α-helical backbone can be tailored by inducing a switch in the secondary structure from α-helix to β-sheet through carboxylation. This enables the gel modulus to be tuned over four orders of magnitude (G′ 6 Pa–3.6 × 10⁴ Pa) independently of polymer concentration and molecular weight. Using carboxylated agarose gels as a screening platform, we demonstrate that soft-carboxylated agarose provides a unique environment for the polarization of endothelial cells in the presence of soluble and bound signals, which notably does not occur in fibrin and collagen gels. Furthermore, endothelial cells organize into freestanding lumens over 100 μm in length. The finding that a biomaterial can modulate soluble and bound signals provides impetus for exploring mechanobiology paradigms in regenerative therapies.     

Synthesis of carbon-14 analogue of 1,5 diaryl-5-[14C]-1,2,3-triazoles.

Two 1,2,3-triazole anticonvulsants, 1-(4-methylsulfone-phenyl)-5-(4-methyl-phenyl)-1,2,3-triazole and 1-(4-methylsulfone-phenyl)-5-phenyl-1,2,3-triazole, both labeled with carbon-14 in the 5-position were prepared from para-tolunitrile-[cyano-14C] and benzonitrile-[cyano-14C], respectively.     

Transfer of sensory branches of radial nerve in hand surgery

Transfer of sensory branches of the radial nerve to sensory branches of the ulnar or median nerves has been carried out to restore sensitivity to the digits in patients suffering from severe, longstanding and irreparable damage to the median or ulnar nerves, due to war injuries. The author describes the two surgical techniques in detail and reports the results obtained.     

Chemical Constituents of Dichloromethane Extract of Cultivated Satureja khuzistanica

Four compounds beta-sitosterol, beta-sitosterol-3-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside, ursolic acid and 4',5,6-trihydroxy-3', 7-dimethoxyflavone were characterized from the dichloromethane extract of the aerial parts of Satureja khuzistanica (Lamiaceae), a native medicinal plant growing in Iran, on the basis of spectral analysis and comparing with the data in literature. The natural occurrence of these compounds can be conclusive for the chemotaxonomic characterization of the genus Satureja.
