Urolithin A(UA) is a metabolic compound generated during the biotransformation of ellagitannins by the intestinal bacteria. The physiologically relevant micromolar concentrations of UA, achieved in the plasma and gastrointestinal tract(GI) after consumption of its dietary precursors, have been revealed to offer GI protection. The health benefit has been demonstrated to be principally related to anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects. UA has been shown to possess the capability to regulate multiple tumor and inflammatory signaling pathways and to modulate enzyme activity, including those involved in carcinogen biotransformation and antioxidant defense. The purpose of this review is to gather evidence from both in vitro and in vivo studies showing the potential of UA in GI protection alongside suggested mechanisms by which UA can protect against cancer and inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract. The data presented herein, covering both studies on the pure compound and in vivo generated UA form its natural precursor, support the potential of this metabolite in treatment interventions against GI ailments. 相似文献

A mortality cohort study was carried out on 11,224 men with pneumoconiosis diagnosed during the period 1970–1985. The cohort was selected from among subjects entered into the National Register of Occupational Diseases and included 7,065 coal miners, 924 employees of underground work enterprises, 1,796 workers of the metallurgical industry and iron and nonferrous foundries, as well as 1,439 refractory materials, china, ceramics, and quarry workers. The cohort was traced up to the end of 1991. The mortality of all groups enrolled in the study, as compared with that of the general male population of Poland, showed a statistically significant excess of overall mortality (SMRs ranging from 105; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 100–110 to 136; CI: 121–153) as well as a great excess of deaths from diseases of the respiratory system (SMRs from 383; 95% CI: 345–424 to 588; 95% CI: 457–744). In workers of the metallurgical industry, foundries, and those from refractory materials, china, and ceramics manufacturing plants as well as quarries, a statistically significant excess of deaths from infectious diseases (mostly tuberculosis) was found (SMRs: 503; 95% CI: 364–677 and 286; 95% CI: 177–437, respectively). Mortality from lung cancer as significantly elevated only in the group of metallurgical industry and iron and nonferrous foundry workers (SMR: 159; 95% CI: 124–201). In the remaining subcohorts, no significant excess of deaths from lung cancer was noted. The study does not support the hypothesis on the role of exposure to crystalline silica in the induction of lung cancer. Significantly lower mortality was seen for diseases of the circulatory system (SMR: 89; 95% CI: 82–96), hypertensive disease (SMR: 63; 95% CI: 38–98), cerebrovascular disease (SMR: 79; 95% CI: 62–99), atherosclerosis (SMR: 79: 95% CI: 66–93), and injuries and poisonings (SMR: 50; 95% CI: 38–64) in coal miners. In addition, lower mortality was noted for cerebrovascular disease (SMR: 56; 95% CI: 32–91) and injuries and poisonings (SMR: 34; 95% CI: 17–61) in metallurgical industry and iron and nonferrous foundry workers. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Rich in polyphenols, cranberry juice (CJ) with high antioxidant activity is believed to contribute to various health benefits. However, our knowledge of the neuroprotective potential of cranberries is limited. Previously, we have demonstrated that CJ treatment controls oxidative stress in several organs, with the most evident effect in the brain. In this study, we examined the capability of CJ for protection against Parkinson’s disease (PD) in a rotenone (ROT) rat model. Wistar rats were administered with CJ in a dose of 500 mg/kg b.w./day (i.g.) and subcutaneously injected with ROT (1.3 mg/kg b.w./day). The experiment lasted 45 days, including 10 days pre-treatment with CJ and 35 days combined treatment with CJ and ROT. We quantified the expression of α-synuclein and apoptosis markers in the midbrain, performed microscopic examination, and assessed postural instability to evaluate the CJ neuroprotective effect. Our results indicate that the juice treatment provided neuroprotection, as evidenced by declined α-synuclein accumulation, Bax and cleaved/active caspase-9 expression, and normalized cytochrome c level that was accompanied by the enhancement of neuronal activity survival and improved postural instability. Importantly, we also found that long-term administration of CJ alone in a relatively high dose may exert a deleterious effect on cell survival in the midbrain. 相似文献

In this article we discuss the importance of food plants, both introduced and native, in the pharmacopoeia of the Polish community in Misiones, Argentina. Food species constitute a relevant portion of all botanicals used by Polish settlers in home therapies (41%), while introduced food species prevail among the continued herbal remedies used by the study group. We explain this pattern of use by food plant availability, their versatility as reflected in the number of medicinal applications, and also their importance in cross-cultural relations. Finally, we conclude that several food plants used by Polish migrants (e.g., Allium sativum, Mentha xpiperita, and Camellia sinensis) may have served to “strengthen” migrants’ identity within the host country. 相似文献

This survey searched for allergic skin reactions associated with, and possibly resulting from, sporting or recreational activities. The goal was to develop profiles of the types of allergens and responses that might be expected in association with particular sports involvement. The data mainly derive from published reports of allergic-appearing skin responses occurring during and after sports participation. The majority of these are single or short series of cases. Some supplementary data from earlier reviews, and two cases from our own clinical experience, have also been incorporated. Given the scattered availability of published case material in this field, we have included most of the reports that came to our attention. We have indicated where the connection between the clinical response and the putative agent or sporting activity seems tenuous. The data are organised according to type of reaction (type I, immunoglobulin E-mediated, largely hives, angioedema and anaphylaxis; and type IV, cell-mediated, largely contact dermatitis). Some envenomations that may be amplified by allergy have also been included. In water sports, allergic sensitivity to equipment (wetsuits, masks, goggles), water per se and disinfecting agents, and various water-dwelling creatures was found. In team and other outdoor sports, most allergies related to shoes, braces/supports and other equipment, and occasionally to topical medicaments and other miscellaneous contactants. Sports participants encounter a variety of potential sensitisers. Of interest is whether a higher level of physical activity may put them at greater risk of becoming sensitised. 相似文献

Nonlinear propagation effects produced by focused pulses in blood were measured over a 20-cm range, being inspired by diagnostic applications in cardiology. The initial and maximum pressures applied during measurements in blood were equal to 0.40 MPa(pp) and 0.76 MPa(pp), while the pressure estimated at the patient body surface equalled 0.70 MPa(pp). Measurements of the frequency characteristic and the linearity of the ultrasonic probe used in experiments were performed in water. A numerical procedure developed previously was applied in blood to calculate the pressure distribution of its first and second harmonics along the beam axis. The comparison of numerical and measured distributions in blood at a temperature of 37 degrees C showed rather good agreement. Using numerical methods, a proportional growth of the second harmonic with the increased applied initial pressure was first observed, and finally the maximum limiting effect was found. In this way, much higher level of harmonics could be obtained. However, there arise the questions of the transmitting system construction and of the nonuniform resolution in the case of harmonic imaging when increasing the applied initial pressure. 相似文献
