OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the association of dry mouth with oral symptoms and function, such as denture instability, discomfort, soreness in denture-bearing tissue, and dissatisfaction with chewing, tasting, or speaking in removable denture wearers. STUDY DESIGN: The subjects were 493 removable denture wearers with a mean age of 67.3 years. Perception of oral dryness was measured by a questionnaire. A multiple logistic regression analysis was used to determine the effect of the dry mouth on oral symptoms and function after controlling for age and gender. RESULTS: Oral dryness during eating was related to dissatisfaction with chewing (odds ratio, 10.5; P < .001) and speaking (odds ratio, 3.5; P < .05) and overall dissatisfaction (odds ratio, 6.3; P < .01) in complete denture wearers. Feeling of dry mouth was likely to be associated with soreness in denture-bearing tissues in both complete and removable partial denture wearers. CONCLUSIONS: There was a significant association of the perception of dry mouth among a group of denture wearers with oral symptoms and function.  相似文献

Mammary tumors of a newly isolated strain of Chinese wild mouse (JYG mouse) harbor exogenous mouse mammary tumor virus (MMTV). The complete nucleotide sequence of exogenous JYG-MMTV was determined on the proviral 5' long terminal repeat (LTR)(partial)-gag-pol-env-3' LTR (partial) fragment cloned into a plasmid vector and the cDNA sequence from JYG-MMTV producing cells. Similarly to the other MMTV species the LTR of JYG-MMTV contains an open reading frame (ORF). The amino acid sequence of the JYG-MMTV ORF resembles that of SW-MMTV (92% identity) and endogenous Mtv-7 (93% identity) especially at the C-terminal region. Thus, a functional similarity in T-cell receptor V beta recognition as a superantigen is implicated among these MMTV species. Analysis of the viral gag nucleotide sequence revealed that this gene is not disrupted by the bacterial insertion sequence IS1 or IS2, which have been reported to be present in the majority of the plasmids containing the gag region. Comparison of amino acid sequences of JYG-MMTV with those of BR6-MMTV showed that over 96% of the amino acids of gag, pol, protease and env products are identical. These results suggest the intact nature of the nucleotide sequence of the near full-length MMTV genome cloned in the plasmid.  相似文献

Research approaches to biofilm are stratified by a series of analyses: (1) microbial number and species; (2) microbial proteins, such as enzymes; and (3) microbial activity, such as metabolic activity. On the other hand, the hierarchical structure of biology includes the genome, proteome, and metabolome, in which the metabolome is the final output of biological function. Metabolome analysis is the comprehensive analysis of the metabolome, a new strategy for biological research in the 21st century. The stratified structure of biofilm research corresponds to the biological hierarchy, and the analysis of microbial activity, especially metabolic activity, is comparable to metabolome analysis; however, oral biofilm samples are too small to analyze the metabolome by conventional methods. Recently, a new device involving capillary electrophoresis (CE) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MS) has been developed, facilitating metabolomic investigation of the central carbon metabolic pathways (i.e., the EMP pathway, pentose phosphate pathway, and TCA cycle) in oral biofilm. Using CE–MS, we analyzed metabolome profiles of oral biofilm after oral rinsing with glucose in vivo and evaluated the effects of oral rinsing with fluoride and xylitol on the metabolome profiles of oral biofilm. The results were somewhat consistent with previous in vitro data obtained from single bacterial strains, namely, Streptococcus and Actinomyces; however, new information describing the metabolic properties of oral biofilm was also obtained. This metabolomic approach will reveal the functional characteristics of oral biofilm in vivo, potentially providing new insights into the nature of oral biofilm in health and disease.  相似文献

Rationale:Anti-myelin oligodendrocyte protein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a new disease entity with various clinical phenotypes. MOGAD often present with recurrent optic neuritis (ON), and it can also develop as a compartment of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Moreover, multiple autoantibodies such as an anti-myeloperoxidase antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPO-ANCA) had been reported in the serum of patients with NMOSD.Patient concerns:We report an 86-year-old woman with a 2-year history of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). The patient had a rapid loss of vision in her left eye. No abnormal findings were observed on her left fundus, and she tested negative for MPO-ANCA upon admission. However, anti-MOG antibodies were observed in the patient''s serum and cerebrospinal fluid.Diagnosis:A diagnosis of MOGAD complicated with MPA was made.Interventions:The patient received twice steroid pulse therapy and oral azathioprine as maintenance therapy.Outcomes:Her vision rapidly recovered, and no subsequent relapse was observed during the 8-month observation period.Conclusion:To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of MOGAD complicated with MPA, and steroid pulse therapy and azathioprine therapy were effective for ON caused by MOGAD.  相似文献

A 33-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for fever and abdominal pain. A blood analysis revealed pancytopenia and increased serum pancreatic enzymes with disseminated intravascular coagulation. A detailed examination revealed acute pancreatitis, with diffuse swelling of the pancreas and diffuse beaded dilatation of the main pancreatic duct, which mimicked autoimmune pancreatitis complicated by acute myeloid leukemia. Systemic cytotoxic chemotherapy led to the remission of leukemia and pancreatitis. We hypothesized that the etiology of acute pancreatitis was invasion of leukemia cells. Acute pancreatitis is rare as a symptom of leukemia; however, we should consider the possibility of leukemia during the differential diagnosis of acute pancreatitis.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo clarify the characteristics and growth of bacteria that may infiltrate liquid baby formula during feeding and after storage for more than 3 h, the transfer of oral bacteria through artificial nipples, and bacterial survival in liquid baby formula and a baby drink were examined immediately after drinking and after storage at 4 °C for 12 h and 24 h.MethodsThirteen human subjects (aged 19–24 years) were asked to drink approximately 50 mL of liquid baby formula and a baby drink, via the artificial nipple of a baby bottle. Samples of the remaining liquid after storage at 4 °C for 12 h and 24 h were inoculated onto blood agar plates and incubated anaerobically at 37 °C for 7 days. Genomic DNA was extracted from individual colonies, and the bacterial species were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing.ResultsThe mean concentrations of bacteria in the liquid baby formula were (2.6 ± 2.8) × 104 and (4.1 ± 6.6) × 104 colony-forming unit/mL after storage at 4 °C for 12 h and 24 h, respectively. Streptococcus (43.2%), Veillonella (9.3%), and Schaalia (8.2%) species were recovered from the remaining liquid baby formula after storage at 4 °C for 12 h. In contrast, no bacteria were detected in the remaining baby drink after storage at 37 °C for 24 h.ConclusionsThe levels of bacteria immediately after drinking and after storage at 4 °C for 12 h or 24 h were similar, suggesting that remaining liquid baby formula may be preserved safely in a refrigerator for more than 3 h.  相似文献
