Female sex hormones and multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is the most frequent debilitating neurological disease in young subjects. The autoimmune process predominantly affects females. This paper presents a review of experimental and clinical data about the effect of female sex hormones and conditions associated with hormonal alterations on the disease process. Specific consideration is given to the use of estrogens as a remedy influencing the disease course. There haven't been enough studies to indicate presence of either hormonal disbalance in females with multiple sclerosis or peculiarities in the hormone-cytokine profile during disease relapse and remission. Further investigations in this area are needed to provide more profound knowledge of the pathogenesis of this socially significant disease.     

Inhibition of GSK-3β Decreases the Ischemia-Induced Death of Renal Cells

Pharmacological preconditioning with insulin and lithium ions prevented the death of renal cells under conditions of ischemia/reperfusion. Preincubation of cells with insulin or lithium ions decreased production of reactive oxygen species after ischemia/reoxygenation. These agents also prevented the development of mitochondrial dysfunction in renal cells induced by ischemia/reoxygenation. It was hypothesized that the protective effects of these agents are related to inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase-3(. This enzyme is inactivated upon phosphorylation of serine residue in position 9. We found that in vivo administration of lithium ions to animals before renal ischemia prevents the development of kidney failure.     

Lupus Erythematosus-like Eruption due to D-Penicillamine in Progressive Systemic Sclerosis

A 58-year-old woman with progressive systemic sclerosis developed a butterfly erythematous eruption, hemorrhagic maculae, crusting, and erosions on the face 15 days following administration of D-penicillamine. This appeared to be a lupus erythematosus-like eruption due to an adverse drug reaction to D-penicillamine because of the rapid recovery from the general symptoms, the total involution of skin lesions with topical treatment only, the transient demonstration of autoantibodies and their fast negativation, negative ANA, and the histologic features of lupus erythematosus combined with marked exudative changes.
